Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Thursday night.

I was standing in the Ironvale great hall in the gown I'd chosen for tomorrow's ceremony—cream silk with lace at the sleeves, simple and clean—when Cameron's voice cut through the air like a blade.

"I, Cameron Davis, Alpha of Ironvale, reject you, Evie Ferguson, as my mate."

The words hit before I understood them. Then the proto-bond we'd sustained for three years tore through my chest like a silver wire drawn through my ribs. I gasped. My knees buckled. The stone floor slammed into my palms, cold and unforgiving. Pain flooded every nerve—not sharp, but vast, a hollow ache spreading outward from the center of me like I was being emptied from the inside.

I looked up. Cameron stood at the head of the hall, shoulders squared, chin lifted just a half-inch. That posture. I'd seen it before—whenever he was about to do something he knew was wrong but had already decided to justify.

Behind him, the ranked wolves of Ironvale lined the walls. Witnesses. This wasn't a private conversation. This was a ceremony.

My father—Douglas Ferguson, Beta of the Shadowmere Pack—stood at Cameron's side. His face was blank. Not surprised. Not sorry. Just... waiting.

I pressed my thumb hard against the inside of my wrist. The pressure grounded me. Kept me from screaming.

My wolf surged inside me—not silent, not cowering. Screaming. Furious. For the first time in my life, I felt the shift-impulse claw up through my bones, a searing heat that wanted to tear me open and let something wild and silver-white explode outward. I shoved it down. Hard. If I shifted here, now, I'd lose the only thing I had left: control.

I forced myself to stand. My legs shook, but I locked my knees and faced them both without dropping my gaze.

Cameron didn't move toward me. No one did.

Douglas stepped forward. His voice was measured, careful. The voice of a man who'd spent decades managing difficult conversations. "The arrangement is simple, Evie. You'll travel to Blackmoor Court in Jessica's place. Lycan Prince Rafael requires a bride under the Luna Accord. You'll fulfill that obligation."

Jessica. My stepsister. The one who was supposed to marry Rafael—until rumors spread that the Lycan Prince was dying of some silver-blood curse, his wolf fading, his face ravaged. Of course she'd refused. Of course they'd come for me instead.

I looked at my father. At the man who had never once called me by an endearment. Who had watched me work myself hollow for three years in Cameron's pack house and said nothing.

"I want my mother's territory," I said. My voice came out steady. Flat. "Sign over the ancestral rights. In writing. Before I take a single step toward any vehicle."

Douglas blinked. Just once. "Evie—"

"That's the price," I said. "You want me to go? Fine. But I want what's mine by blood. The territory records. The land rights. Everything she left."

Silence stretched through the hall. Cameron's jaw tightened. He didn't like being made to wait. Didn't like that I wasn't begging.

But Douglas reached into his coat and pulled out a pen.

While he bent over the documents at the hall's side table, I heard footsteps in the corridor. Light. Quick. I turned.

Jessica stumbled into the hall, her hand pressed to her arm. Blood seeped between her fingers—four neat parallel lacerations, deliberate and precise. Her eyes were wide, glassy with theatrical tears.

"She attacked me," Jessica gasped, her voice breaking. "She—she went insane when she found out—"

I didn't even have time to speak.

Cameron moved. Fast. He crossed the hall in three strides and seized my arm, wrenching me around. I hit the floor face-down, the stone cold against my cheek. His knee drove between my shoulder blades, pinning me.

"Cameron—" I tried to twist free, but his weight was immovable.

He reached toward the fireplace. I heard the scrape of metal against stone. Then I smelled it—heated silver, the acrid burn of it in the air.

No. No.

"You want to leave a mark?" Cameron's voice was low, rough. "Let's make sure your dying prince knows exactly what you are."

The silver rod pressed against my bare back. The sizzle came first—my skin splitting, burning, the scent of my own flesh charring. Then the pain hit. White-hot. Blinding. I screamed—once, a sound that cracked through the stone hall and echoed off the walls.

Then I went silent.

My wolf retreated so deep inside me I couldn't feel it at all. Just the burn. Just the emptiness where the bond used to be.

Cameron lifted the rod. I heard him drop it back into the grate.

Hands dragged me upright. Warriors. Two of them. My legs wouldn't hold me. They pulled me toward the doors, my feet scraping across the stone.

I turned my head. Douglas stood at the side table, territory documents signed and folded in his coat pocket. He didn't speak. Didn't look at me.

Jessica watched from the doorway, her hand at her collarbone. Her scratches were already healing.

They threw me into the back of a black SUV. The door slammed. The engine started.

As we pulled through the Ironvale gates, I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist again. Focused on the one thing I'd secured before they took everything else.

The territory documents weren't in Douglas's pocket anymore.

Archie Nichols had been standing in the hall's shadow. I'd seen him—just for a second—slip the papers from Douglas's dropped coat while Cameron's attention was on me.

I didn't ask him to do it. I didn't need to.

The SUV turned onto the road toward Blackmoor territory. My back was a ruin of silver-brand wounds. My wolf was silent. The bond was gone.

But the documents were safe.

And I was still breathing.
