Chapter 1

The mark under my collarbone died at 3:47 in the afternoon, three days before our tenth anniversary.

I was holding a swatch of ivory ranunculus for the banquet table when it happened. One second the mark was warm, the way it had been every day for ten years, a small sun stitched under my skin. The next second it wasn't. It rotted. That's the only word for it — a hot, wet collapse, like something dying from the inside out, blistering as if someone had pressed a coal to my collarbone and held it there.

I didn't scream. I set the flowers down very carefully so I wouldn't crush them, and I walked outside.

The wind carried it before I reached the tree line — bitter, herbal, wrong. Suppressants. Black-market ones, the kind brewed to fool a wolf's nose, and I would know that stench anywhere, because my bloodline had been sniffing out lies for four hundred years. My wolf, Sable, was already clawing behind my ribs, snarling one word over and over. *Him. Him. Him.*

I followed the smell into the woods behind the pack house without deciding to.

I found them behind the old pines, thirty yards past the training ring nobody used after dark. Dominick had Julissa's back against a trunk, her scarf — the pretty gray one she'd worn to lunch that week — pulled loose from her throat. His teeth were in her neck. Not a kiss. A mark. Blood ran hot and fresh down her collarbone, pooling under ten years of masked, suppressed scent that broke apart the second his saliva hit her skin, and underneath it I smelled her. Really smelled her, for the first time in a decade. She smelled like jasmine and ash and hunger.

Sable screamed inside me, hurling herself against the walls of my own skull, begging me to shift, to charge, to rip them apart at the throat where they stood. My hands shook. My knees wanted to fold.

Instead, I pressed my thumb hard into the ruined mark until the pain gave me something to stand on, and I made myself breathe through my mouth so the woods wouldn't carry my scent back to them. Something older than grief rose up under the wreckage — cold, patient, clear-eyed. It didn't cry. It calculated. I backed away between the trees without snapping a single twig.

By the time I reached the foyer, my face was arranged.

"Julissa." I smiled at her when she came through the side door twenty minutes later, scarf retied high and neat. "That color's new. It suits you."

"Oh — thank you." Her laugh came out breathless, too bright. Ten years of practice, and I'd never once heard the strain under it until now. "Adrianna, I actually wanted to talk to you — the banquet —"

"Would you organize it?" I said, before she could finish. "The whole thing. You always have better taste than my committee."

Her whole face lit up like I'd handed her a crown. "Really? Oh my God, yes — I won't let you down."

"I know you won't."

She hugged me. I let her. Over her shoulder, Barnaby, stretched out by the stairs, lifted his head and released one long, low growl at her back as she walked away — the same growl he'd given her for ten years, the one I'd always shushed as jealousy.

I crouched down and pressed my forehead to his fur. "I know," I whispered. "I know, Barnaby. I'm listening now."

That night I pulled every territorial filing I'd drafted for this pack in a decade — I'd written most of them myself, credited to Dominick, because I never needed the credit, only the control. I found the old dynastic continuity statute buried in the Lycan Council code, the one that let a Luna bind prime commercial territory and Alpha-blood protection rites to a chosen heir. I photographed the clauses. I drafted the transfer to Nala with hands that didn't shake once. Then I sent Elder Elara three words on an encrypted line. Her answer came before sunrise: *We are ready.*

The next evening, over dinner, I told Dominick it was tax optimization — nothing more. He signed without reading a single line, the way he always had, and kissed my temple. "You handle these things so well," he said. "I don't know what I'd do without you."

"You won't have to find out," I said, and cleared his plate.

He carried his coffee into the study. I watched from the hallway as his phone lit up on the desk, and he turned it face-down, angling it away from the door before I could see the name.
