Chapter 1

I had been waiting for this night my entire life.

The grand hall of the Silverfang pack house was lit with hundreds of candles, their warm glow catching the silver threads woven through the ceremonial banners overhead. Every ranked wolf in the pack was here. Allied representatives from three neighboring packs sat in the outer rows. The elders stood at the altar in their formal robes, Elder Rowan at the center, his weathered face composed and solemn.

And I stood beside Connor Stephens, my fated mate, Alpha of Silverfang.

His scent wrapped around me the way it always did — cedar and rain, clean and deep, the smell that my wolf had recognized the first time I'd walked into a room with him and never stopped reaching for. My wolf hummed low in my chest, warm and content, the way she only ever felt when he was close. After twenty-three years of being the adopted daughter, the girl whose place in the pack was always slightly conditional, always slightly provisional — tonight was supposed to change all of that.

Tonight, I would be Luna.

Elder Rowan's voice filled the hall, steady and ceremonial, reciting the bonding rites that had been spoken at every Mate Ceremony in Silverfang's history. I kept my eyes forward, my hands loose at my sides, my breathing even. I had practiced this. I had imagined this. I had a list somewhere in my apartment of every small detail I'd wanted to remember about this night.

Then I felt it.

It was subtle enough that I almost missed it — a shift in Connor's scent, so slight it could have been nothing. The cedar was still there, but underneath it, something had gone cold. Like rain turning to ice. I didn't move. I didn't look at him. But my thumbnail found my palm, pressing in just below the knuckle, the small private anchor I'd developed years ago for moments when I needed to stay inside my own head.

I told myself it was nerves. His nerves. Even Alphas got nervous at their own Mate Ceremonies.

But then his eyes moved.

Just once. A single flicker toward the back of the hall, quick and controlled, the kind of glance a man makes when he's checking that something is in position. It lasted less than a second. When his gaze came back to my face, his expression was exactly what it had been before — warm, certain, the face of a man about to claim his fated mate.

I pressed my thumbnail harder into my palm.

The doors exploded open.

The sound hit the hall like a physical thing — the heavy ceremonial doors slamming back against the stone walls, the gasp that rippled through three hundred wolves simultaneously. I turned with everyone else.

Hanna Mills stood in the doorway.

Her dress was shredded at the shoulder, the fabric hanging in deliberate strips. Her hair was loose and wild. Tears streaked her face in perfect lines, and her eyes found the altar with an accuracy that had nothing to do with accident.

"He attacked me." Her voice broke on cue, loud enough to reach every corner of the hall. "Colt — Mia's brother — he attacked me in the Alpha suite. He—"

The rest dissolved into sobs.

The hall went absolutely silent.

I watched Connor step away from me.

He didn't hesitate. He didn't look at me first, didn't reach for my hand, didn't do any of the things a mate does when the world suddenly tilts sideways. He simply stepped away from the altar, and his face — the warm, certain face — was gone. What replaced it was something cold and prepared, the expression of a man executing a plan he had been rehearsing for a long time.

My wolf went very still inside me.

From the front row, I felt it before I understood what it was — a pressure, slow and deliberate, pressing down on my composure like a hand on the back of my neck. I knew that feeling. Residual Luna aura, old and practiced. I didn't have to look to know it was Mrs. Stephens, Connor's mother, sitting perfectly straight in her seat with her hands folded in her lap and her eyes fixed on me with polite, surgical contempt.

She had always looked at me exactly like that.

Connor turned to face me. And then he used his Alpha tone.

I had heard him use it on warriors who challenged him, on rogues brought before the pack, on subordinates who needed reminding of the hierarchy. I had never heard it aimed at me. The sound of it — that deep, resonant command frequency that bypassed conscious thought and pressed directly on the wolf underneath — hit me like a wall.

"Mia Morrison." His voice filled the hall. Every wolf in the room felt it. "You will renounce your bloodline claim to Silverfang territory. You will allow my warriors to take Colt into custody. Or I will formally reject you before every ranked wolf in this hall."

The mate bond screamed.

That is the only word for it. The biological connection the Moon Goddess had wired into my DNA, the bond I had spent months preparing to seal, contracted like a fist around my chest and screamed. My wolf pressed against my ribs. The cedar-and-rain scent that I had loved was still there, still reaching me, still triggering every instinct I had — and it was being used against me like a blade.

I understood, in that moment, with complete and terrible clarity, that this had been planned. The timing. Hanna's entrance. The torn dress. Connor's prepared face. Mrs. Stephens already deployed in the front row. This was not a reaction to a crisis. This was the crisis, constructed in advance, timed to the exact moment I was most publicly exposed, most biologically vulnerable, most surrounded by witnesses who would watch me either submit or be destroyed.

They had built this around me like a room with no doors.

I pressed my thumbnail into my palm until I felt the half-moon indent form.

Then I lifted my head.

"Elder Rowan." My voice came out steady. Quieter than Connor's, which somehow made it carry further. I felt the elders shift their attention to me. "I invoke the right of Blood Oath under ancient pack law. Before these witnesses."

A murmur moved through the hall.

Connor's eyes narrowed.

I turned to face him fully, and I made sure my voice was the kind of quiet that a room has to lean into. "If my sibling is proven innocent of this accusation — by evidence, by examination, by any standard this pack recognizes — you will forfeit your Alpha title. Your territory. And you will broadcast your confession through every pack's mind-link channel." I paused. "Sign it, Connor. In front of the elders. Or tell every wolf in this room why you won't."

The silence was absolute.

I watched something move behind his eyes — a calculation, fast and cold. He was confident. He had Hanna's performance, his warriors, his mother's aura, and three hundred witnesses who had just watched him use his Alpha tone on his own fated mate without flinching. He believed his conspiracy was airtight.

He believed I had nothing.

He reached for the elder's ceremonial pen.

And he signed.
