Chapter 5

I met my uncle in a private cabin two counties north of Shadowridge, where the road ended at a frozen lake and the pines were thick enough to swallow sound.

I had not seen him in person in nine years.

He was already inside when I arrived, standing by the fireplace with his hands clasped behind his back. The Campbell crest on his ring caught the firelight. He turned when I closed the door, and for one long moment he just looked at me—really looked, the way an uncle looks at the niece who used to bring him pinecones in summer.

Then his eyes flicked down to the leather folder in my hand.

"Show me," he said.

I laid it all out on the heavy wooden table. The embezzlement spreadsheets. The two point three million in increments. The deed to Garrett Gibson's house. The messages, time-stamped, hundreds of them. The ultrasound labeled in Caden's own handwriting. The draft rejection document, dated three days after the summit.

My uncle did not sit. He read standing up, one page at a time, his face giving away nothing.

When he reached the rejection draft, he stopped.

He set the page down very gently. Then he twisted the Campbell crest on his finger once—a slow, deliberate turn—and the air in the cabin changed.

His eyes flashed gold. Not a flicker. A blinding, burning gold that lit the room like a second sun.

His aura hit me a half-second later.

I was Lycan-blooded. I had felt his power before. But this—this was not an uncle's power. This was the Lycan King's, unbound, and it pressed down on my shoulders like the weight of a mountain. My knees nearly buckled. My wolf, who feared nothing, dropped her head and bared her throat.

"He dared," Harvey said. His voice was grinding stone. "He dared to do this to a Campbell."

I didn't answer. I couldn't.

He drew the aura back, slowly, the way a man sheathes a sword. The pressure eased. I could breathe again.

"Natalia." He finally looked at me, and his eyes were still gold at the edges. "You will not handle this alone."

"I wasn't planning to."

"Good." He picked up the rejection draft, folded it once, and slid it into his coat pocket like a man pocketing a man's heart. "The Pack Alliance Banquet is in eleven days."

"Yes."

"I will attend as guest of honor."

I looked up.

"And you," he said quietly, "will escort me through the doors."

My wolf rose inside me, slow and tall.

"Yes, Uncle."

He almost smiled. Then he turned back to the fire, and the matter was closed.

Before I left, he mentioned, with the careless ease of a king dropping a pebble into a pond, that his royal escort for the banquet would include one of the younger Lycan princes. A nephew of his by marriage. "Rhys Turner. He asked to come."

"Asked?"

Harvey's mouth twitched. "Insisted, after he heard your name."

I didn't know what to do with that, so I didn't do anything with it. I tucked it away beside the folder of evidence and drove back to my motel through the dark.

---

The ten days that followed moved like a held breath.

Phoebe fed me reports. Caden had stopped looking for me by the third day. By the sixth, he was rehearsing his acceptance speech in the great hall of the pack house. By the tenth, Phoebe's cousin in the kitchens had passed along a transcript.

He practiced it nightly. Macy sat in the front row in a different designer gown each evening—silk, satin, beaded, the last of the embezzled funds stitched into every seam—and clapped at all the right places.

"And so it is with deepest pride," Caden's voice rang through the recording, "that I credit the brilliant work of my extraordinary trainee, Macy Gibson, whose tireless efforts on the Riverbend and Clearwater alliances have brought our pack to this historic moment..."

I listened to it once.

Then I deleted it and ate dinner.

---

The night of the banquet, Phoebe came to my private suite at the venue with garment bags over her arm and a look in her eye like she was about to start a war.

The gown was black. Floor-length. Bare shoulders, a neckline cut sharp as a blade, the back open down to the base of my spine. No jewelry except small diamond studs and the thin silver chain at my throat that held a single Campbell crest, hidden beneath the fabric.

Phoebe's hands shook slightly as she did up the clasp at my neck.

"Sorry," she muttered. "I'm not nervous. I'm furious. There's a difference."

"I know."

She stepped back. I turned to the mirror.

The woman who looked back at me was not the Luna of Shadowridge. She was not Caden's wife. She was not anyone's apology.

I took a breath—and for the first time in twenty years, I stopped suppressing it.

I had spent my whole life keeping my Lycan blood folded small inside my chest. A candle behind cupped hands. Five years as Luna, I had let it whisper, never roar. Tonight, I let it open.

The aura rolled out of me in a slow, silent wave. The mirror seemed to ripple. The lamps flickered. The very air in the suite thickened with the scent of wild orchids and ozone—the green sharpness of a storm seconds before it breaks.

Phoebe sat down hard on the edge of the bed.

"Goddess," she whispered. "Natalia."

I looked at my reflection.

My eyes were calm.

My wolf was smiling.

"Get my coat," I said. "The King is waiting."
