Chapter 2

Three days after I found the photos, Briella showed up at my door.

I hadn't slept much since the studio. I'd been sleeping in the guest room, staring at the ceiling, listening for Axel's key in the lock and hating myself for still listening. So when the buzzer rang at ten in the morning, I thought it might be Lane with papers to sign. I wasn't ready for her.

She stood in the hallway in a cream sweater, hair loose, eyes already wet. She looked like she'd been crying for hours, or like she'd practiced crying for hours. I couldn't tell the difference yet. I would learn to.

"Stella." Her voice cracked on my name. "Please. Can I come in? I just — I need to talk to you."

I should have shut the door. Instead I stepped back and let her into my home, because some old, obedient part of me still believed that hearing people out was the decent thing to do.

She sat on the edge of my couch like she was afraid of it. "I know you probably hate me," she said, hands twisting in her lap. "But the messages have to stop. Please."

"What messages?"

She pulled out her phone, thumb trembling as she swiped, and turned the screen toward me. Texts from an unknown number, my name attached somehow, ugly words I'd never written. *Stay away from my husband. I'll ruin you.* Threats laid out in neat gray bubbles.

I looked at them a long moment. Then I looked at her. "I didn't send these."

"Stella—"

"I've never texted you in my life. I didn't even have your number until this week." My own voice sounded strange to me, flat and far away. "Why are you really here, Briella?"

For just a second — less than a second — something moved behind her eyes. Not fear. Not hurt. Something pleased, something satisfied, gone so fast I almost convinced myself I'd imagined it. Then the tears came back, right on cue.

"He came to me," she said softly, like she was breaking bad news gently to a child. "I never asked for any of this, Stella. I want you to know that." She dabbed under her eyes with one knuckle, careful not to smear anything. "Maybe you should ask yourself why he needed something you couldn't give him."

The words landed exactly where she meant them to. I felt my face go hot, my chest go tight, and underneath it all, a small cold voice noting how carefully she'd chosen each word. Not *he loved me.* Not *I seduced him.* Just — *why couldn't you.* Like she was doing me a kindness, handing me the knife to cut myself with.

I opened my mouth to answer. I never got the chance.

The front door banged open. Axel filled the doorway, chest heaving like he'd run the whole way from wherever he'd been, phone still in his hand. He must have gotten a text. He must have imagined the worst version of this scene before he even hit the elevator button.

His eyes swept the room once. Briella, crumpled and crying on my couch. Me, standing over her, my voice probably still sharp in the air.

He didn't ask what happened. He didn't ask who came to whose home, uninvited, with fake screenshots on her phone. He crossed the room in three strides and struck me across the face.

The sound of it filled the whole loft — a flat, obscene crack that seemed to hang in the air after his hand had already dropped. My head turned with the force of it. My cheek caught fire.

Briella made a small broken sound and buried her face against his chest, and his arm came up around her automatically, protectively, the way you'd shield a child from a car crash.

I stood there with my hand against my burning skin, and I looked at his hand — the one that had just hit me. The same hand that adjusted lenses with such tenderness. The same hand that had spent four days ago, according to the file dates, resting against Briella's bare spine while he told her to hold still, hold still, just like that, beautiful. That hand had never once reached for my face. Not to touch it. Not to photograph it. Only, now, to strike it.

Something in my chest that had been fraying for three days finally gave, quietly, without any drama at all. I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I just felt it go — a thread snapping somewhere behind my ribs, so clean I almost heard it.

I didn't say anything to either of them. There was nothing left to say that they hadn't already answered.

I walked past them both, down the hall, into the bedroom, and I locked the door behind me. I sat on the edge of the bed and looked at my hand for a second before I picked up the phone.

Lane answered on the first ring this time, like he'd been waiting.

"File everything," I said. My voice didn't shake. "I want it done this week."

There was a pause on the line, brief and careful. "Are you hurt?"

I touched my cheek again. It was still hot. "Just file it, Lane."

"Okay," he said. "It's done."
