Chapter 1

The Midtown Manhattan law office of Marcus Webb was bathed in morning light when I arrived. I was early—a habit I'd developed over twelve years of a marriage that had slowly hollowed me out. The receptionist smiled politely and led me to the conference room where my divorce would be finalized in less than an hour. The space was all polished mahogany and floor-to-ceiling windows that framed the city I'd once thought would be my kingdom.

I placed my leather portfolio on the table and, with deliberate care, set down a small velvet case beside it. Inside was Eleanor Hamilton's antique brooch—the last gift from the only Hamilton who had ever made me feel welcome. I didn't open it. I simply kept it close, the way one keeps a last photograph of someone already gone.

Marcus Webb entered, his silver-streaked hair and steady demeanor a comforting presence in this sterile room. 'Rayne,' he said, his voice low and professional, 'everything is prepared. Just the signatures and it's done.'

I nodded, not trusting my voice. There was nothing left to say about twelve years of quiet erosion. The door opened again, and Colby walked in, flanked by his legal team. He looked exactly as he always did—impeccably dressed, jaw set, eyes cold. The CEO who had conquered boardrooms but never once conquered the silence between us in our own home.

We sat across from each other, the table between us like an ocean. Marcus laid out the papers, and we signed in sequence—page after page of legal language dissolving what had once been sacred. Colby's pen scratched against the paper with mechanical precision. My own signature felt lighter, as though I were signing a letter to a stranger rather than ending a marriage.

The silence between us was not grief. It was the silence of two people who had already said everything they would ever say to each other, and neither of us remembered when that happened.

The door swung open again, and Nola Powell swept in like she owned the room. 'I had to be here for you, Rayne,' she said, her voice dripping with practiced concern. Her eyes, however, gleamed with triumph as she positioned herself beside Colby, her hand lingering on his arm.

I watched her performance with a detachment that surprised even me. She moved around the table, touching documents, straightening papers, playing the role of the supportive friend while standing next to the man who had betrayed me with her.

As she circled back toward me, her hand caught the edge of the velvet case. It tumbled from the table, hitting the marble floor with a sound that seemed to echo in my chest. The brooch shattered, pieces scattering across the polished stone.

I reached down, my hand closing around a shard that sliced into my palm. Blood welled up, dark against my skin. I looked up at Colby, waiting for him to move, to speak, to do anything.

He watched. He did nothing.

In that moment, as Nola gasped and Marcus called for a first aid kit, I felt something final snap inside me. The last thread of sentiment I'd carried for Colby Hamilton broke clean, and I felt nothing but the cool relief of a chain finally falling away.

I pressed a tissue to my bleeding hand and knelt to collect every shard of the brooch, placing them carefully back into the velvet pouch. My movements were methodical, calm. When I stood, neither Colby nor Nola had moved to help me.

'Rayne, are you alright?' Marcus asked, concern etched across his face.

'I'm fine,' I said, and for the first time in years, I meant it. 'The papers are signed. Thank you, Marcus.'

I walked out of the attorney's office without looking back, the velvet pouch clutched in my uninjured hand. In the elevator, alone, I allowed myself exactly ten seconds of stillness—eyes closed, back against the wall. Then the doors opened, and I stepped out into the bustling street.

That evening, I poured myself a glass of champagne and took a photograph: the signed divorce papers, the bubbling glass, and the velvet pouch just visible at the edge of the frame. I uploaded it to Instagram with a simple caption: 'Best decision I ever made. Cheers to starting over.'

I set my phone down and watched the city lights from my apartment window. For the first time in twelve years, I was not waiting for Colby Hamilton to come home. I was waiting for tomorrow. And I was not afraid.
