Chapter 4

The voicemail came at 11:47 p.m. I was sitting in the guest room with the lights off, the way I did most nights now, when the phone buzzed against the nightstand.

I let it ring out. Then I dialed in.

"Ms. Morrison, this is Mercy General calling regarding your mother, Marie Morrison. I'm so sorry to inform you that she passed at 9:14 this evening. She was comfortable. She wasn't alone—one of our nurses, Sandra, stayed with her through the night. Please call us back at your earliest convenience to discuss next steps."

I listened to it once. I didn't cry. I didn't shake. I pressed delete, and the little icon spun and vanished, and that was that.

She wasn't alone. Someone named Sandra had held my mother's hand while I sat in a house with marble floors and did nothing. I filed that name away somewhere I wouldn't look at it too closely, not yet.

I got up. My legs felt like they belonged to someone else. I walked down the hall, down the grand staircase where I'd once fallen and lost everything and gained my sight back in the same breath, and I went into the kitchen.

It was 2 a.m. The house was silent the way expensive houses are silent—no creaks, no settling, just cold air moving through vents somewhere far away.

I filled the kettle. I measured the leaves by hand, the way my mother taught me, not by scoop but by feel, letting my fingers tell me when it was enough. I watched the water climb toward a boil and did not rush it. My mother used to say you can't hurry good tea. You can't hurry grief either, I thought. But you can hold both hands still while it moves through you.

I poured the water. I watched the leaves unfurl, dark green ribbons opening in the cup, and I thought about her hands, and her humming, and the way she never once asked me for anything in all the years I'd been gone.

I drank the tea standing at the counter, alone, at two in the morning, in a kitchen that was never mine.

Something in me went quiet after that. Not the quiet of giving up. The quiet of a decision already made.

---

The week that followed had a shape to it, and I moved through that shape with a patience that surprised even me.

I downloaded the footage first. All of it, from all four cameras, onto a hard drive I kept wrapped in a scarf at the bottom of my suitcase, and again onto a cloud account under a name that wasn't mine. I did this in pieces, over several nights, never more than twenty minutes at a time, the laptop screen turned low so no light would show under the door.

Then, on the sixth night, I watched it. All of it. Start to finish, sitting cross-legged on the guest bed with the door locked and my mother's urn on the nightstand beside me like a witness.

I watched Kaden and Aylin in my own bed, the sheets I used to sleep in, her laugh muffled against his shoulder. I watched Margaret's face after the soup hit my arm—the flat, satisfied nod she gave the housekeeper, so small you'd miss it if you weren't looking for exactly that. I watched Kaden on the phone in his study, cufflinks catching the light, confirming the transfer, confirming the swap, confirming that I would never suspect a thing.

I watched it the way you'd watch weather. Not with rage. With recognition.

When it was over, I closed the laptop.

I didn't cry that night either. I was past that particular door. What I felt instead was something closer to stillness—the stillness of a woman who has finished reading the last page of a book she already knew the ending to.

I was ready.

---

Tuesday morning, Kaden left for the city at seven. Margaret left for her luncheon at ten, pearls fastened, perfume already filling the foyer before she was even out the door.

I waited until the house was empty except for the housekeeper, who I knew would be in the east wing until noon.

I packed one suitcase. Not the walk-in closet full of things the Hicks family had bought me—not the silk, not the cashmere, not a single piece of jewelry except the thin gold chain my mother gave me, which I was already wearing, which I had never once taken off. Just what was mine. A few plain clothes. My phone. The hard drive wrapped in its scarf.

In the kitchen, I set the divorce papers on the breakfast table, signed on every line where my signature was required. I set my wedding ring on top of the stack. Then I filled a teacup with hot water—full to the brim—and set it down on the papers so the draft from the hallway wouldn't scatter them before someone found them.

I tucked my mother's urn under my left arm. Under my right, the faded blue cloth bundle of her tea journals, the silk tie soft and familiar against my palm.

I walked through the foyer, across the marble I had scrubbed on my knees, past the coat closet with its hidden camera still recording, still watching, the way it always had.

I opened the front door. Late morning light spilled across the steps, bright and clean.

I did not look back.

The door closed behind me with a quiet, final click.
