Chapter 2

They discharged me on a Tuesday. I came home in a wheelchair I didn't need anymore, my eyes lowered, my hands folded in my lap like a good, broken thing.

The first camera went into the study on Wednesday. I waited until the housekeeper took her afternoon break and Margaret left for her bridge club. I moved with my hand trailing the wall, the way I always had, cane tapping soft on the marble. Only when the hallway was empty did I let my eyes open all the way. I tucked the little black lens behind a row of law books on the third shelf, angled toward Kaden's desk. My heart hammered the whole time. I counted my own breathing to stay calm. Four, five, six.

Thursday, the hallway outside the master bedroom. Friday, the kitchen, wedged into a gap behind the spice rack where no one would ever look. Saturday, the corridor outside Kaden's office, hidden inside a fake smoke detector I'd ordered along with the cameras. Four days, four cameras, all of them feeding into a cloud account with a password only I knew. I memorized the login by touch on the keypad, the way I'd learned to memorize everything else in this house.

No one suspected a blind woman of anything.

Margaret didn't wait long to remind me what I was worth now.

She found me in the foyer on Sunday morning, pearls at her throat, voice like a closed door. "Chloe. Come here."

I turned toward her voice, careful, slow. "Yes, Margaret?"

"Your little hospital adventure put this household two days behind schedule. The florist came while you were gone. The caterer left mud on my tile." She paused. I heard the click of her heel against marble. "You'll clean it. On your knees. It's the least you can do, given the circumstances."

The circumstances. My dead baby. My dead child, who wasn't even mine to lose.

"Of course," I said. My voice came out soft. Obedient. It cost me nothing to say it, because I already knew where the camera was pointed—right there, above the coat closet, catching every inch of that entryway in crisp color.

A maid brought the bucket. I got down on my knees. The marble was cold through my slacks, cold the way it always was, cold the way I remembered from a hundred mornings before this one. I scrubbed. Margaret stood over me with her arms crossed, watching, saying nothing, which was its own kind of cruelty. When I finished, she said, "Better," and walked away without looking back.

I stayed on my knees one more second than I needed to. Not out of pain. Out of patience. I was building something. Every second of it was going somewhere.

Three days after that, Kaden hosted a dinner. Investors, mostly—men in dark suits who talked about acquisitions between bites of scallop. I sat at the far end of the table where the wives and the useless were seated, my hands folded, my face turned toward whoever spoke, nodding at nothing.

The housekeeper came around with the soup course. I heard the ladle dip, heard the china clink. Then heat, sudden and vicious, splashing across my forearm. I gasped—real, unplanned, the sting of it faster than my composure.

"Oh—I'm so sorry, Mrs. Hicks," the housekeeper said, too fast, too rehearsed.

A chair scraped. Margaret's voice rose over the table, pitched for an audience. "Oh, for heaven's sake. Someone get a towel. I do apologize, everyone—we're having such trouble with staff lately."

As if the trouble was the staff. As if the trouble wasn't standing three feet away in pearls.

"It's fine," I said, dabbing at my arm with a napkin someone pressed into my hand. "I'm fine. I'm so sorry for the disruption."

Apologizing. Always apologizing. That used to be the whole shape of my life in this house.

But I knew where the camera in the dining room corner caught the angle—I'd checked it twice before the meal, adjusting a candlestick until the lens had a clean line to the table. And in that unguarded half-second after the soup hit my skin, I felt Kaden's guests go quiet with polite discomfort, and I felt something else too: the housekeeper's eyes flicking toward Margaret. Just a glance. Just a question—did I do it right?—answered by the smallest nod, satisfied, almost pleased, gone before anyone else could catch it.

I caught it. Not with my eyes—I didn't need to look. I already knew the footage would show it later, clean and undeniable, timestamped and safe in a server none of them would ever think to search.

Later that night, alone in my room, I ran cool water over the burn and watched the red mark rise on my skin. It hurt. I let it hurt. I didn't reach for anything to numb it.

I thought about my mother instead—her hands steady over a teapot, her voice telling me good things take patience, that you can't rush the steep or the leaf will turn bitter.

I wasn't rushing anything. Not anymore.
