When My Husband Tried to Kill Me for His Mistress Novel Cover

When My Husband Tried to Kill Me for His Mistress

One ordinary evening, I carried Dutton's medication to his study—and stopped cold at the sound of Bethany's laughter. Not her polished charity-gala voice, but something private, almost cruel. Through the cracked door, she whispered, "She actually thinks it was her fault." In that moment, the ground beneath my marriage gave way. The husband I trusted and the friend I welcomed shared a secret—a plot aimed at me. Now I must unravel their deception before their dangerous passion claims my life.

Chapter 1

I was reaching for Dutton's evening medication when I heard Bethany laugh.

It came from the study—the door cracked open just enough to let sound slip through. I should have knocked. Should have announced myself. But something in that laugh stopped me cold. It wasn't her public laugh, the warm one she used at charity galas. This was different. Private. Easy.

"She actually thinks it was her fault," Bethany said.

I stood in the hallway, prescription bottle in hand, and went very still.

"Five years." Dutton's voice, low and amused. "Five years and she's never questioned it once."

"Because she's pathetic." Bethany again. I could picture her perched on the edge of Dutton's desk, the way she always did when she thought I wasn't watching. "God, you should have seen her face at the hospital. I thought she was going to throw herself off the roof."

"The guilt was the whole point," Dutton said. "Couldn't have done it without the cliff setting. Very dramatic. Very her."

Something in my chest went quiet. Not loud. Not breaking. Just... quiet.

"My only regret," Bethany continued, "is that I can't have kids now. But honestly? Worth it. She's been our live-in servant for half a decade and we didn't pay a cent. Plus the Wells estate transfers next month. Conrad's little princess signed everything."

"She'd sign her own death certificate if I asked nicely," Dutton said.

They both laughed.

I looked down at the pill bottle in my hand. Orange plastic. White label. Dutton's name printed in neat pharmacy letters. I had picked up this prescription every month for five years. I knew the pharmacist by name. I knew which generic brand didn't upset his stomach. I knew everything.

I turned and walked back to the living room.

"Here you go," I said, setting the bottle on the side table next to Dutton's wheelchair. My voice sounded normal. Steady. I had practiced steady for a very long time.

Dutton glanced up from his tablet. "Thanks, babe."

Babe. He still called me babe.

Bethany emerged from the study a moment later, her hair perfect, her smile warm. "Sarai, you're an angel. I don't know what we'd do without you."

"It's nothing," I said.

She touched my arm. Her hand was soft. Manicured. "Seriously. You're family."

I smiled at her. "Do you need anything before bed?"

"No, I'm good. You should get some rest. You look tired."

"I will," I said.

I walked to my room—the small guest room at the end of the hall that used to be storage—and closed the door behind me. I did not lock it. Dutton didn't like locked doors.

I sat on the edge of the bed and looked at my hands. They were steady. I had expected them to shake. I had expected something—tears, rage, the sharp bright pain of a heart breaking. But there was nothing. Just a strange, cold clarity.

Five years.

I thought about the night of the accident. The cliff road. The rain. Bethany screaming from the back seat. Dutton yelling at me to watch out. The sickening lurch as the car went over. I remembered waking up in the hospital with my mother standing over me, her face hard. "What did you do, Sarai?"

I remembered Dutton in the hospital bed, his legs motionless under white sheets. "It's okay," he'd said. "I forgive you."

I remembered Bethany, pale and small, the doctor's voice: "The damage to her uterus is extensive. I'm sorry."

I had wanted to die. I had begged them to let me make it right. And they had let me. They had let me cook their meals and manage their medications and clean their home and absorb every casual cruelty with a grateful smile, because I owed them. Because I had destroyed their lives.

Except I hadn't.

I stood and walked to the window. The Manhattan skyline glittered outside, a thousand lit windows in buildings full of people who had no idea what happened in penthouses like this one. I traced the rim of the water glass on my nightstand with one fingertip. Over and over. A habit I'd developed somewhere in the last five years when I needed to think.

Dutton's tablet. He left it on the side table every night, password protected but predictable. I had watched him enter the code a hundred times. He thought I wasn't paying attention. He thought I was decorative.

Bethany's calendar. She kept everything on her phone—appointments, emails, the private messages she thought were encrypted.

Carter Industries. Dutton's company, built on my father's connections and my family's reputation. I had sat through enough dinners, enough phone calls, enough late-night strategy sessions in the next room to know more than he realized.

I stopped tracing the glass.

The woman I had been for five years—the guilty one, the grateful one, the one who believed she deserved this—was gone. I didn't mourn her. She had been a fiction they wrote, and I had played the part because I didn't know it was a script.

But now I knew.

I opened my laptop and navigated to a legal forum I had bookmarked months ago. I composed a message—brief, untraceable, specific. A handwritten note would be better, but this would do for now. I addressed it to a name I had kept filed away for years, a man my father once trusted: Elias Ward.

I wrote: *I know the truth. Are you ready?*

Then I closed the laptop, lay down on the bed, and stared at the ceiling.

I did not cry.

I had work to do.
