When My Husband Slept With His Mother’s Favorite Girl Novel Cover

When My Husband Slept With His Mother’s Favorite Girl

For weeks, I played the perfect partner, preparing Drake's favorite dishes and listening to his tales. He never suspected my quiet evolution; he stopped truly seeing me long ago. Beneath the kitchen counter, my hands remained steady as I documented his financial records. Now, with attorney Rachel Monroe presenting the final, binding documents, there is no turning back. My husband is about to sign away his entire legacy, completely blind to the ruin his ignored wife has quietly orchestrated.

Chapter 2

Mrs. Stone found me on the sunporch the morning before we left for the Cooper estate, two cups of tea already poured, steam curling up into the cold light. She didn't ask if I wanted company. She just sat down across from me and waited until I picked up my cup.

"Why did my son marry his best friend's ex-wife the same afternoon the divorce was finalized?" she asked. No preamble. No softening.

I set the cup down without drinking from it. I thought about lying, some version that made me look less calculating and Lionel less reckless. Then I thought about what she'd spent her career doing, and how she'd see through anything but the truth.

So I told her. The burner phone in the golf bag. The hotel receipts going back nine years. The night I sat on the bathroom floor and didn't cry, just counted tiles until I understood exactly what my life had been. I told her about the plan — the fake IRS audit, the divorce Drake signed without reading, the four minutes it took to become Lionel's wife instead. I told her about the security footage from this house I hadn't shown anyone yet, the one where Cayson sits alone in a guest room while everyone downstairs toasts Aliyah Ford like she's already family.

Mrs. Stone didn't interrupt once. She didn't flinch, either, which somehow made it easier to keep going.

When I finished, the tea had gone cold in both our cups.

"Show me everything you have," she said.

I pulled out my phone. She reviewed it the way I imagined she'd reviewed a thousand depositions — quick, precise, no wasted movement. Twenty minutes in, she tapped the screen and looked up.

"This clip. Timestamp it clearly. The judge will want the date visible, not just implied." Another few minutes. "This text from Mrs. Cooper about the guest room — save the metadata separately. Don't just save a screenshot." And near the end: "This one." She turned the phone toward me, Mrs. Cooper's voice sharp and thin, snapping at Cayson to stop being so loud. "This is the one that will matter most. Not because it's the worst. Because it's the most ordinary. Judges remember ordinary."

I hadn't thought of it that way. I'd been collecting ammunition. She was building a case.

"Thank you," I said.

"Don't thank me yet." She stood, smoothing her skirt. "Thank me when it's over."

---

The Cooper estate smelled the way it always had at Thanksgiving — roasting turkey, woodsmoke, the particular hush of old money trying to look effortless. Lionel's hand stayed at the small of my back as we walked in, and Drake glanced up from across the foyer, saw us together, and went right back to his phone.

He didn't see the rings. He didn't see anything, really. That was Drake — he looked at me the way people look at furniture they've stopped noticing.

Aliyah was already in the dining room, adjusting a centerpiece with the confidence of a woman rearranging her own living room. "Mom, does this look better here or by the window?" she called, and Mrs. Cooper — hands full of napkins, sleeves pushed up — answered without hesitation, warm as I'd never once heard her sound with me. "By the window, sweetheart. You always have the best eye."

Mrs. Cooper turned when she saw me. Her smile went thin and automatic, the kind reserved for people you tolerate because you have to. "Scottie," she said, and that was all. No hug. Just a nod, brisk as a door closing.

I smiled back just as thin. I'd had a decade of practice.

---

Aliyah cornered me in the kitchen twenty minutes later, under the guise of helping me find the good gravy boat.

"You look tired," she said, tilting her head with that practiced concern. "Is everything okay?"

"I'm great, actually." I kept my voice light. "Thank you for asking."

"Drake mentioned you two are going through kind of a rough patch." She said it soft, like a secret between friends, like she hadn't been the rough patch for nine years running. "I just want you to know I'm here. If you need to talk."

"That's so thoughtful, Aliyah."

She waited a beat, like she expected the words to crack something open in me. When they didn't, she tried again, sweeter this time, sharper underneath. "Some women just aren't built for this life. The pressure, the family stuff. And that's okay, you know? Not everyone has to be everything."

"That's so thoughtful, Aliyah," I said again, exactly the same tone, exactly the same smile.

She blinked. I watched something shift behind her eyes — not quite fear, not yet, but the first flicker of a woman realizing her usual weapons weren't landing where they used to. She opened her mouth once more, found nothing, and closed it.

"I should — the rolls," she said, and left the kitchen a little too fast, a little too stiff in the shoulders.

I picked up the gravy boat myself. My hands didn't shake at all.
