Chapter 2

The drive upstate took two hours. I kept my hands loose on the wheel, eyes on the road, mind somewhere else entirely. Massimo had texted me an address and nothing more. No questions. No conditions. Just coordinates and a promise that everything I needed would be waiting.

The facility sat at the end of a private road, hidden behind a wall of pines. From the outside, it looked like any other industrial complex—gray concrete, high fences, security cameras. But when the gate rolled open and I pulled into the lot, I saw the Apex Racing Club logo emblazoned across the main building, sleek and unmistakable.

Massimo stood in the open bay door, hands in his pockets, waiting. He looked the same—older maybe, a few more lines around his eyes, but steady. Unshakeable. The way he'd always been.

I parked and got out. The air smelled like motor oil and cut grass. Familiar. Grounding.

"Celia," he said, and there was something in the way he said my name—like he'd been holding it carefully for seven years and was finally allowed to speak it aloud.

"Massimo."

He gestured toward the building. "Come on. There's something you need to see."

I followed him through the main corridor, past offices with frosted glass doors, past a state-of-the-art gym visible through an interior window, past framed photos of championship wins I recognized but had tried to forget. My chest tightened with each step.

He stopped in front of a reinforced door marked "Private Garage – Authorized Personnel Only" and punched in a code. The lock disengaged with a heavy click.

The lights came on automatically as we stepped inside.

And there it was.

My car.

The championship car. Black and silver, low and predatory, exactly as I'd left it seven years ago. Except it wasn't abandoned or dusty or forgotten. It gleamed under the fluorescent lights, polished to perfection, every surface immaculate. The tires looked new. The windshield spotless.

I stopped breathing.

Massimo said nothing. He just stood beside me, letting me take it in.

I moved forward slowly, like I was approaching something sacred. My hand reached out before I could stop it, fingertips brushing the hood. The metal was cool and smooth. Real. Solid.

"I changed the oil every six months," Massimo said quietly behind me. "Replaced the brake pads last spring. Rotated the tires. Checked the electronics quarterly. Just in case."

My throat closed. I traced the curve of the hood, the familiar lines I'd memorized in another lifetime. "You kept it running."

"I kept it ready."

I looked at him then. He was watching me with an expression I couldn't quite name—something between hope and grief.

"Why?" I asked.

He didn't answer right away. Instead, he walked to the far wall where a glass display case stood on a metal pedestal. Inside, resting on black velvet, were my gloves. The black leather racing gloves I'd worn in every championship race. The ones I thought I'd lost.

"Because you were coming back," he said simply. "Maybe not today. Maybe not next year. But eventually. And when you did, I wanted you to have everything you left behind."

Something cracked inside me. Not tears—I didn't cry anymore—but recognition. The kind that hurts because it forces you to see what you've been refusing to look at.

"I didn't think anyone remembered," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

"I remembered," Massimo said. "Every lap. Every record. Every win."

He pulled a tablet from a nearby workbench and handed it to me. I took it, my hands steadier now, and watched as he pulled up file after file—telemetry data, lap times, performance analytics. Years of it. Perfectly archived. Organized by track, by season, by weather conditions.

"You saved everything," I breathed.

"You earned everything," he corrected. "I just made sure it didn't disappear."

I scrolled through the data, seeing my own driving reflected back at me in numbers and graphs. Apex speeds. Braking points. Cornering angles. A more faithful record of who I was than I had kept of myself.

"I've assembled a team," Massimo continued, his tone shifting to business. "Personal trainer. Data analyst. Nutritionist. A skeleton pit crew—people I trust, people who know how to keep their mouths shut. The facility is yours. Twenty-four-seven access. Whatever you need."

I looked up from the tablet. "You did all this in two days?"

"I did most of it seven years ago," he said. "I just had to make a few calls to activate it."

Seven years. He'd been waiting seven years.

I set the tablet down and walked back to the car. I pressed both palms flat against the hood, feeling the cold metal ground me, anchor me.

"I don't know if I can still do this," I admitted.

Massimo came to stand beside me. "You never forgot how. You just forgot you were allowed to."

I turned to look at him. His eyes were steady, certain.

"When do we start?" I asked.

"Whenever you're ready."

I glanced at the gloves in their case, then back at the car.

"Tomorrow," I said. "We start tomorrow."

Massimo smiled—a real smile, the kind I hadn't seen in years. "Then tomorrow it is."
