Chapter 2

Harrison's face twisted. I'd seen him angry before—controlled, cold anger that he wielded like a weapon. This was different. This was the rage of a man whose carefully constructed image had just shattered on camera for millions to witness.

He lunged.

I didn't move. Some distant part of my brain registered that I should step back, raise my hands, protect myself. But that calm that had settled over me when I retrieved the marriage certificate—it held me in place like a force of nature.

His hand was halfway to my face when the apartment door exploded inward.

The sound was massive. Wood splintering. The doorframe cracking. And then the room filled with bodies—men in dark suits moving with the kind of precision that made Harrison's military bearing look like a child playing dress-up.

My father walked through the wreckage of my front door.

Emilio Fernandez didn't rush. He never rushed. He moved with the unhurried certainty of a man who knew that every room he entered belonged to him the moment he crossed the threshold. His hair was silver at the temples now, his suit immaculate. He looked at the crowd of phone-wielding strangers, at Ryleigh with her mascara-streaked face, at Harrison frozen mid-lunge.

Then he looked at me.

Something passed between us. Not words. Not even a gesture. Just recognition. I saw the question in his eyes: *Are you hurt?* I gave the smallest shake of my head. *Not yet.*

He turned his attention to Harrison.

The silence stretched. My father didn't speak. He simply stood there, his hands loose at his sides, his expression utterly neutral. The security team had fanned out behind him, blocking every exit. One of them moved to each person holding a phone, and with quiet efficiency, the livestreams began cutting out one by one.

Harrison's hand was still raised. He seemed to realize this, finally, and lowered it with visible effort.

'Mr. Fernandez,' he said, and I heard the tremor he was trying to hide. 'This is a private matter between my wife and—'

'Touch her again.'

My father's voice was barely above a whisper. He didn't finish the sentence. He didn't need to. The words hung in the air like a blade suspended by a thread.

Harrison took a step back.

A man in a white coat entered behind my father. I recognized him vaguely—Dr. Chen, my father's personal physician. He'd been at family dinners when I was younger, always quiet, always competent.

'Ms. Watson,' Dr. Chen said, his tone professionally courteous. 'I understand you've been claiming pregnancy. Given the circumstances and the public nature of these allegations, I'm going to need to conduct a brief examination.'

Ryleigh's eyes went wide. 'You can't—I don't consent—'

'The livestream is still active on three devices,' one of the security team said quietly. 'Approximately two hundred thousand viewers remaining.'

Ryleigh's mouth opened and closed. She looked at Harrison, desperate, but he was staring at my father with the fixed attention of a rabbit watching a snake.

Dr. Chen approached with a small medical kit. The examination took less than five minutes. Ryleigh stood rigid, her arms wrapped around herself, her earlier performance of maternal vulnerability completely abandoned.

When Dr. Chen stepped back, his face was impassive.

'No pregnancy,' he said. 'No physical indicators of recent pregnancy or miscarriage. No hormonal signs consistent with gestation at any stage.'

The remaining phones captured it all. I watched the comments section on the nearest screen—the tide turning in real time. The same people who'd called me a homewrecker ten minutes ago were now tearing Ryleigh apart with the same vicious enthusiasm.

*She lied about being pregnant?*

*This girl is INSANE*

*The REAL homewrecker exposed*

*I can't believe we fell for this*

Ryleigh made a sound—something between a sob and a gasp. She grabbed Harrison's arm. 'Tell them,' she begged. 'Tell them I was pregnant. Tell them I lost it. Tell them something.'

Harrison pulled his arm free.

I watched him do it. Watched him step away from her the same way he'd stepped away from me a thousand times in smaller ways over five years. Ryleigh stumbled, her heel catching on the edge of the rug.

My father made a small gesture. The security team began ushering people toward the door—firmly, but without violence. The mob that had stormed in with such righteous fury shuffled out in silence, their phones dark, their faces confused.

Ryleigh was crying now—real tears this time, not the performed ones from earlier. Harrison followed the crowd out without looking back at either of us.

And then it was just me and my father.

He crossed the room and stood in front of me. He didn't touch me. He never had been demonstrative, not since I was very small. But he looked at me with an intensity that said everything words couldn't.

'Are you hurt?' he asked.

'No.'

'Do you want me to—'

'No.' I said it firmly. 'Not yet.'

He studied my face for a long moment, then nodded once. 'When you're ready.'

He left the way he'd come, his security team filing out behind him. Someone pulled the broken door closed as best they could.

I stood in the wreckage of my anniversary dinner. The candles had burned down to nothing. The beef Wellington was cold on its serving platter. The white roses were already starting to wilt in their crystal vase.

I walked to the counter and slid my wedding ring off my finger. It left a pale band of skin behind—five years of wear compressed into a thin line of unmarked flesh. I set the ring on the marble surface with a soft click.

I didn't cry.

I opened my phone and scrolled through my contacts until I found the name I'd saved years ago but never called: Dominic Reyes. Former federal prosecutor. Current divorce attorney. The kind of lawyer you kept in your back pocket for the wars you hoped you'd never have to fight.

It was 3:47 AM when I typed the message.

*I need a consultation. How soon can you meet?*

The reply came in less than a minute.

*My office. 8 AM. Bring everything.*

I set the phone down and looked around the apartment—at the table I'd set with such care, at the home I'd built with such hope. Five years of my life, reduced to evidence.

I went to the bedroom and began gathering documents.
