Chapter 3

Sophie's apartment was smaller than my walk-in closet at the penthouse. One bedroom, a galley kitchen, a living room with windows facing a brick wall. The couch pulled out like she said. The sheets smelled like lavender detergent.

I set my father's urn on the bookshelf next to a photo of Sophie at our Columbia graduation. I put my suitcase in the corner. I sat on the edge of the pull-out and looked at my hands.

I owned almost nothing.

The penthouse lease was Tyler's. The cars were registered in his name. The credit cards I'd been using for seven years all traced back to accounts he controlled. I had my father's trust disbursements—monthly payments Neil had structured to come directly to an account Tyler never touched. I had my own savings from before the marriage, maybe forty thousand. I had the clothes in my suitcase and the laptop in my bag.

I also had the passwords to every shared account we'd ever opened. And Tyler's laptop was still synced to the home network because he never imagined I'd know how to access it.

I pulled out my phone and opened the notes app. I started a list.

Sophie came home at seven with Thai takeout and two bottles of wine. She didn't ask if I was okay. She just handed me a container of pad thai and said, "Eat."

We sat on the floor with our backs against the couch. The food was good. I hadn't realized I was hungry.

"What's that?" Sophie pointed at the sketchbook on the coffee table.

I'd forgotten I'd taken it out. It was open to a drawing I'd started junior year. A public plaza design. Lots of green space and clean lines and a fountain in the center shaped like an open hand.

I got a B-plus on it. The professor said it was too optimistic.

"Nothing," I said. "Old homework."

Sophie picked it up. She turned the pages slowly. "These are beautiful, Evie."

"They're old."

"So?" She set the book back down. "You were good at this. You could still be good at this."

I looked at the plaza drawing. At the careful pencil lines and the notes in the margins about foot traffic and accessibility.

"I stopped," I said.

Sophie didn't ask why. She already knew.

After she went to bed, I sat at the kitchen table with the sketchbook open and a pencil in my hand. I stared at the plaza for a long time. Then I started drawing again.

I added trees. Benches. A path that curved instead of cutting straight. I worked until my hand cramped and the sky outside turned gray.

When I finally stopped, it was three in the morning and the drawing looked like something I'd want to walk through.

I went to sleep on the pull-out and didn't dream.

---

Tyler's lawyers moved fast.

Marcus called me at noon the next day. "They filed a motion claiming you're mentally unstable due to grief. They're arguing you're attempting to fraudulently contest the terms of your marriage."

I was drinking coffee at Sophie's kitchen table. I set the mug down carefully.

"What does that mean?" I asked.

"It means they're trying to paint you as irrational so anything you say about Tyler looks like a breakdown. It's a standard play when the other side knows they're losing."

"Are they winning?"

"No," Marcus said. "But they froze the joint accounts. You won't have access until we sort this out."

I'd expected that. I had my own account. I'd be fine.

"What else?" I asked.

Marcus paused. "Gloria Castillo filed a civil claim against your father's estate. She's arguing Tyler's years of supporting Neil's business entitle the family to a share of the inheritance."

I laughed. It came out sharp and ugly.

"Tyler didn't support my father's business," I said. "He bled it."

"I know. We'll prove that. But Evelyn—" Marcus's voice shifted. "Tyler's also making calls. Telling people you're not yourself. That he's worried about your safety. Some of them are believing him."

I thought about the people I used to have lunch with. The charity boards I used to sit on. The friends who stopped texting after the wedding because Tyler said I was too busy.

"Let them believe him," I said.

Marcus was quiet for a moment. Then: "Good. I'll be in touch."

He hung up.

I finished my coffee. Then I opened my laptop and started downloading everything Tyler thought I didn't know how to find.

---

Marcus called again three days later. His voice was different. Careful.

"I need you to come to the office," he said. "There's something in your father's estate documents."

I took the subway to Midtown. I sat in the same conference room. Marcus had a file open in front of him.

"Your father's primary asset," Marcus said. "The Midtown parcel. Eighty-three million in assessed value."

"Tyler wants it," I said. "I know."

"He can't have it." Marcus turned the file toward me. "Your father donated it to the City of New York six months before he died. Irrevocable charitable contribution. It's earmarked as a public green space in perpetuity."

I stared at the document. At my father's signature at the bottom. At the date.

Six months before he died.

"The remaining assets are in a trust," Marcus continued. "The structure is airtight. No spouse can claim any portion. Tyler's lawyers went silent for three days after I sent them the documentation. When they finally responded, it was with a motion my paralegal described as 'a hail Mary from men who know they're lost.'"

I read the terms of the trust. Then I read them again.

Every protection I needed was already there. Every door Tyler thought he could walk through was locked. Every asset he thought he could take was already gone.

My father had known.

Not the specifics. Not the slap or the grave or the Porsche tearing through the night. But he'd known enough.

I sat back in my chair. The conference room was very quiet.

"Ms. Richardson?" Marcus asked.

I looked up at him. My eyes were dry.

"He knew," I said.

Marcus nodded slowly. "Yes. I believe he did."

I stood. I picked up my bag. I walked to the window and looked out at the city. Forty-three floors down, people moved through their lives. Cabs honked. Lights changed.

Somewhere out there, Tyler was making calls and filing motions and believing he could still win.

He didn't know my father had beaten him six months ago.

And he didn't know what I was about to do next.

I turned back to Marcus.

"I want everything," I said. "Every document. Every transfer. Every lie he's ever told. And then I want to show the world exactly who Tyler Castillo is."

Marcus smiled.

"Let's get to work," he said.
