Chapter 3

The drawer stayed closed. I went back to the window and watched the traffic.

Damon came home at six. He was on the phone. He walked through the kitchen with it pressed to his ear, talking about square footage and a closing date and a man named Vance. I knew the name. Vance was Chelsea's cardiologist.

When he went into the study and shut the door, Chelsea came through the back hallway. She was in white again. She smelled like expensive perfume. She didn't say anything to me. She walked straight past me to the pantry and started moving things on the shelves. I followed, because she was in my house and I didn't understand why.

The pantry was small. Cans and jars and the good olive oil we only brought out for guests. The fluorescent light hummed overhead and made everything flat and yellow.

She was rearranging. Turning a jar of lentils so the label faced the same way as the others. Straightening a stack of canned tomatoes. She did this with her mouth closed, like she was alone in a room.

"Elora," she said. "There's something I want to say to you."

Her voice was different. Not the soft one. Not the trembling one she used when Damon was in the room. This one was flat. Almost bored. Like she was reading a shopping list.

I didn't answer.

She looked at me. Her face was calm and empty. The way a mirror looks when there's nothing in front of it.

"You've already lost," she said. "The only question is how much of your life you want to waste confirming it."

Her eyes didn't blink.

"If you disappeared tomorrow, no one in this household would notice until the milk ran out."

She picked up the jar of lentils and adjusted it. Turned it until the label sat perfectly straight. The way Damon straightened his water glass. The way Damon straightened his watch on the counter.

Then she walked out.

The pantry door swung shut behind her. The light hummed. I stood there with my hands at my sides and understood, with a clarity that hurt, that she was describing something real.

I had no rebuttal. Not because I couldn't think of one. Because there wasn't one.

I stayed in the pantry a long time. Long enough for the hum to get inside my skull. Then I went back to the kitchen.

Damon was off the phone. He was pouring himself something. He didn't ask where I'd been.

I didn't sleep that night.

The post was up by morning.

I saw it when I opened my phone at the table. A thread on the Columbia faculty forum. Anonymous account. A username made of random numbers.

"The Truth About Professor Sanders."

I read it standing up. Cold coffee in my hand.

It said I had wormed my way into a grieving family. A manipulative mistress. It named the year Damon's friend Marcus died. It named a date. It named a restaurant. Things close enough to the truth to feel true. It was detailed. It had a rhythm. It read like someone had been holding it for a long time.

By the time the coffee was gone, I'd read it four times.

I went to my study and sat at my desk. I opened a blank document. I started writing the rebuttal.

I listed the facts. I attached the documentation. I kept my hands steady. That surprised me. They'd been shaking for a week. But now they weren't. I had something to do.

I finished it at eleven. It was clean. Exact. It had the names and the dates and the records that made the lie fall apart.

I held the phone and looked at it. For the first time in days, I had a plan.

Then Damon came in.

He didn't knock. He never knocked. He walked in and held out his hand.

"Give me the phone."

I looked at him.

"A colleague texted me," he said. "The post. You're not handling it, Elora. People are talking."

"I'm handling it," I said. "I have the records. I listed the actual dates. It's all here."

"Denial makes it worse."

He took the phone out of my hands. Not angrily. Gently. Like a plate being lifted from a child who was eating too slowly.

I watched him read my rebuttal. I watched his eyes move down the screen. I watched his thumb find the reply box.

He typed.

I read it over his shoulder.

"I understand why this looks the way it does. I won't fight it publicly."

"Damon—" I started.

He hit send.

"Denial makes it worse," he said again, and set the phone face-down on my desk. "I'm handling it."

He walked out.

I stood there. My rebuttal sat under his send button, unanswered. My hands were still. They had gone still in a different way. The way my hands go still when I'm about to say something I won't take back.

I reached for the phone.

The post was already spreading. I could see the reply count climbing.

I set the phone down.

I understood, then, that the milk had been running out for a long time. And no one in this house had noticed. Not because they couldn't. Because they weren't looking.
