Chapter 4

I was in the middle of reading Leo's chart when the door opened.

Not a nurse. Not Dr. Patel. The footsteps were wrong—too deliberate, too careful, like someone who had rehearsed the distance between the door and the bed.

I looked up.

He was already looking at Leo.

I was on my feet before I'd made the decision to stand. 'Who are you.'

Not a question. A wall.

He turned to face me then. Tall. Dark hair. Kellen's jaw, Kellen's cheekbones—but none of the coldness that lived behind Kellen's eyes. His face was open in a way that Kellen's never was. It made him look almost unguarded, which I didn't trust for a single second.

'Dr. Soren Harrison.' His voice was quiet. Measured. 'Kellen's half-brother.'

I felt the name land somewhere in my sternum.

'I know who you are,' I said. 'I'm asking why you're in my son's room.'

He reached into the inside pocket of his jacket and set two documents on the bedside table. He didn't hand them to me. He set them down and stepped back, like he understood that the distance mattered.

'DNA results,' he said. 'And a treatment summary. Experimental neural stimulation protocol—I've used it successfully in three vegetative state cases in London. Two full recoveries. One partial.' He paused. 'I believe Leo is my biological son. I believe I can help bring him back.'

The room was very quiet.

I pressed my thumb into the inside of my wrist.

'Get out.'

He didn't argue. He didn't explain himself further or ask me to reconsider. He just picked up his bag, looked at Leo one more time—just for a second, something moving through his expression that I refused to name—and walked to the door.

He stopped at the threshold. Set something small on the bedside table beside the stuffed rabbit. A card.

Then he was gone.

I stood there for a long moment. Then I picked up the DNA document and read it.

I read it twice.

I set it back down and sat in the chair and looked at Leo's hands on the white sheets and did not think about anything at all for a very long time.

---

He came back the next morning.

I was already there when he arrived. He didn't seem surprised. He nodded at me once—not a greeting exactly, more like an acknowledgment that we were both present and that was sufficient—and went directly to the attending neurologist in the corridor. I watched through the glass partition as they reviewed the brain scans together. Soren pointed at something on the imaging. The neurologist leaned in. Whatever Soren said made him go still for a moment before he nodded slowly.

Soren came back the morning after that too. And the one after that.

He never pushed. He never asked me for anything. He reviewed Leo's charts, consulted with the team, and then sat in the chair on the far side of the bed and read aloud. Neurology textbooks. A novel once. A long article about deep-sea fish that I was fairly certain he'd grabbed at random from his bag. His voice was low and steady, the same cadence every time, like the consistency of it was the whole point.

On the fourth afternoon, I came back from the cafeteria to find a container sitting on the floor outside Leo's room. No note. Just a container of congee, still warm, with a plastic spoon taped to the lid.

I stood in the corridor and looked at it.

Then I sat down on the floor with my back against the wall and ate it there, because I hadn't eaten a real meal in two days and my hands were shaking slightly and I was too tired to pretend otherwise.

Through the glass partition, I could see him. Sitting beside Leo. Reading. His hands resting on the open book—Leo's hands, I thought, and then stopped thinking it, and then thought it again.

I pressed my thumb into my wrist until the skin went white.

I didn't know what he wanted. I didn't know what any of this was supposed to mean. I only knew that he kept coming back and he kept asking for nothing and somewhere in the architecture of my carefully constructed numbness, that fact was lodged like a splinter.

---

The announcement ran in the Times Style section on a Thursday.

Kellen Harrison and Aspyn Medina. A Plaza Hotel wedding. A dying man's celebration of love, the copy said. The photograph showed them on the steps of the Harrison townhouse—Aspyn radiant in ivory, her hand in Kellen's, her expression the precise calibration of tender devotion.

I read it on my phone in Leo's room with the morning light coming through the window.

I set the phone face-down on the bedside table.

I looked at my son's hands. At the stuffed rabbit. At the contact card still sitting where Soren had left it, four days ago, beside the rabbit's left ear.

I picked up the card.

I held it for a moment.

Then I opened my laptop and started to work.
