Chapter 2

The suit hangs in the back of my closet, wrapped in plastic like a corpse. Charcoal gray, Armani, tailored to measurements from a lifetime ago. I pull it out at 8:47 AM, the fabric whispering against my fingers. It still fits. Of course it does. I haven't changed, not really. I've just been hiding.

Victoria left an hour ago, her threats still hanging in the air like smoke. The unsigned NDA sits on the counter where I left it, a monument to her miscalculation. She thought I had nothing. She forgot my father was a chess player who planned twenty moves ahead.

The emerald dress pools on the bathroom floor. I step into the suit pants, button the silk blouse, slide into the jacket. The woman in the mirror is a stranger I used to know. Sharp. Precise. Dangerous.

I meet Marcus at a diner in Tribeca at 10:15. He's already claimed a corner booth, three folders stacked beside his coffee. His eyes widen when he sees me.

"I almost didn't recognize you."

"That was the point." I slide into the seat across from him. "Do you have them?"

He pushes the folders toward me. "The Knight Clause. Irrevocable stock transfer, contingent on your father's death and your explicit activation. Fifty-one percent of Freeman Corporation shares, held in trust for five years." His finger taps the top document. "Sign here, here, and here. Once you do, there's no going back."

"Good." I uncap the pen. My signature flows across the pages, muscle memory from a thousand contracts I signed before I became someone's wife. "I need you to prepare for a hostile takeover. Full documentation. I want every board member to understand exactly what's happening."

Marcus leans back, studying me. "You're really doing this."

"I'm really doing this."

"Then there's something you should know." He pulls out his phone, opens a trading app. "There's a legend in our circles. An anonymous trader who's been outperforming every hedge fund on Wall Street for the last five years. Goes by the handle 'Sura.' Nobody knows who they are, but their portfolio is—"

"Three hundred percent above market average." I meet his eyes. "I know."

His coffee cup stops halfway to his mouth. "You know because—"

"Because I'm Sura." The words taste like freedom. "I never stopped trading, Marcus. I just stopped being visible."

He sets the cup down carefully, like the table might shatter. "Jesus Christ, Camille."

"Prepare the documents. I'm taking my company back."

The Freeman Corporation boardroom occupies the forty-seventh floor of the tower that bears their name. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame Manhattan like a kingdom. I used to attend these meetings as Axel's wife, sitting in the corner with my hands folded, decorative and silent.

I kick the doors open at 2:33 PM.

Axel is mid-laugh, his hand on Bryson Jenkins's shoulder. The board members—twelve men in identical navy suits—turn as one. Security moves toward me, but Marcus is faster, distributing folders to each seat.

"Gentlemen," I say. "I'm Camille Knight. As of 10:47 this morning, I own fifty-one percent of this corporation."

Axel's face goes white, then red. "What the hell are you—security, remove her."

"I wouldn't." Marcus's voice cuts through the room. "Page three, gentlemen. Authenticated stock transfer, executed under the Knight Clause of Richard Knight's will. Mrs. Freeman is now the majority shareholder."

The room erupts. Voices overlap, chairs scrape. Axel lunges toward me, but Bryson catches his arm. Smart man.

I walk to the head of the table. "Axel Freeman, as of this moment, you are terminated as CEO. Your new position is junior consultant, effective immediately." I place my hand on the back of his chair. "Move."

His jaw works. For a moment, I think he might actually hit me. Then he sees the board members reading the documents, sees Marcus's calm expression, sees the mathematics of his own defeat.

He stands. The chair is still warm when I sit down.

"This is insane," someone says. Gerald Hutchins, I think. "She has no experience. No credentials. We'll all resign before we—"

"Before you what?" I open my laptop, connect it to the projector. "Before you see my credentials?"

The Sura trading account fills the screen. Five years of transactions, each one a small masterpiece of market prediction. The portfolio value sits at the top: $847 million, grown from an initial investment of $50 million.

The room goes silent.

"I am Sura," I say. "I've been outperforming this company by three hundred percent while you were busy congratulating yourselves on quarterly earnings. So before you resign, gentlemen, ask yourselves: do you want to work for someone who inherited his position, or someone who earned hers?"

Gerald Hutchins clears his throat. "All in favor of appointing Camille Knight as Interim CEO?"

Twelve hands rise. Even Axel's, after a moment. He has no choice.

I'm still savoring my victory when my phone buzzes. Axel's name flashes on the screen, but he's sitting right here, his face twisted with rage. Then I understand. He's calling someone else.

My blood turns to ice. Lincoln.

I'm out of my chair, phone to my ear, dialing the school. It rings four times before the secretary answers.

"Dalton Academy, how may I—"

"This is Camille Freeman. I need to speak to my son immediately."

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Freeman, but Lincoln was picked up early today. Family emergency, the gentleman said."

The floor tilts. "What gentleman?"

"He had proper identification. Said you'd sent him."

I end the call. Dial Elias. He answers on the first ring.

"He's safe," my brother says. "I got there ten minutes before Axel's security team. We're at the studio."

The breath I've been holding escapes. "How did you—"

"I've been monitoring his communications since last night. The second he made the call, I moved." A pause. "Welcome back, Cam."

I look at Axel. He's staring at his phone, his face slack with disbelief. He thought he had one card left to play. He was wrong.

"Gentlemen," I say, "let's discuss Q4 projections."
