Chapter 3

The hospital curtain was thin. Pale blue fabric with small white dots. I could see shapes moving on the other side. Shadows.

I was lying on a gurney in the ER. The IV drip made a steady sound. Beep. Drip. Beep. My stomach had stopped twisting an hour ago. The nurse said it was acute gastritis. Stress-induced. She'd asked if I had someone to call.

I'd said yes.

That was four hours ago.

I heard his voice before I saw him.

Low. Familiar. The voice that used to make me feel safe before it made me feel like furniture.

Royce.

I turned my head. Through the gap in the curtain, I saw him. Dark suit. Hair slightly messed. His hand was on someone's back.

Zara.

She was wearing a pale blue dress. Soft fabric. Her hand rested on her stomach. Protective. The way women do when they're carrying something precious.

They were walking out of the OB-GYN wing.

"You don't have to do this," Zara said. Her voice was quiet. Hesitant. The voice of someone offering an exit they don't want taken.

"I want to," Royce said.

His hand moved from her back to her shoulder. Steady. Sure.

"It doesn't matter who the father is," he continued. "I'll raise the child. No questions. You have my word."

She leaned into him. He kissed the top of her head. Gentle. Like she might break.

They walked past my curtain. Ten feet away. Maybe less.

Neither of them looked.

I stared at the space where they'd been. The empty hallway. The fluorescent lights humming overhead.

My hands were shaking.

Not from the pain. From something colder.

I reached up. Gripped the IV line. The tape pulled at my skin.

I yanked it out.

The needle slid free. A bead of blood welled up on the back of my hand. Dark red against pale skin.

The machine started beeping. Loud. Urgent.

The nurse came running. Young. Blonde ponytail. Eyes wide.

"Ma'am, you can't—"

"I'm leaving."

"You need to be discharged properly. You need—"

"I'm leaving."

I stood. The room tilted. I gripped the gurney rail. Waited for the floor to stop moving.

The nurse reached for my arm. I stepped back.

"Ma'am, please—"

I walked past her. Down the hallway. Past the nurses' station. Past the waiting room full of people who had someone coming for them.

I walked out into the cold.

The air hit my face like a slap. Sharp. Clean.

I hailed a cab. Gave the driver my address. Watched the hospital shrink in the rearview mirror until it disappeared.

---

Marcus called two days later.

"I've got something," he said.

I was sitting at the kitchen counter. Coffee in front of me. Cold. I hadn't touched it.

"Send it."

"You're going to want to see this in person."

I met him at a coffee shop in Brooklyn. Small place. Cracked leather booths. The kind of place where no one looks at anyone else.

He slid a tablet across the table.

"Anonymous accounts," he said. "Twitter. Instagram. A private blog she thought she'd deleted. Hosted on a server in Amsterdam."

I looked at the screen.

The first post was dated eight years ago. A photo of a hotel room. Expensive sheets. Champagne on the nightstand. The caption read: *'His savior complex makes him the easiest mark I've ever found.'*

I scrolled.

More posts. More photos. Different cities. Different men. Detailed notes about their weaknesses. Their bank accounts. Their families.

One post from six years ago: *'He keeps a locket in his jacket. Never takes it off. Never shows anyone. I asked about it once. He said it belonged to the girl who saved his life. I told him I lost mine in the rain that night. He believed me.'*

Another post from three years ago: *'He proposed today. I cried on cue. The ring is worth more than my mother made in ten years.'*

I read every word. Then I read them again.

Marcus was watching me. Quiet.

"You okay?" he asked.

"How many copies?"

"Three encrypted drives. Cloud backup. Hard copies in a safety deposit box."

"Good."

I closed the tablet. Slid it back.

"What are you going to do with it?" he asked.

I didn't answer.

---

My father called that night.

I let it ring twice before I picked up.

"Penny." His voice was smooth. Warm. The voice he used on investors. "How are you feeling?"

"Fine."

"I heard you were in the hospital."

"I'm fine."

A pause. Then: "Your stepmother and I are concerned."

"I appreciate that."

"We think you might benefit from some time away. A rest. Somewhere quiet."

I looked out the window. The city was dark. Lights in every building. People living lives I would never know.

"I don't need rest," I said.

"Penny." His voice changed. Harder. "You're not yourself. You're making decisions that affect more than just you. Crawford Holdings depends on your marriage. You understand that."

"I understand."

"Good. Then we're agreed. I've spoken with a lawyer. There are options available when a loved one displays signs of acute emotional instability. I'd rather not pursue them. But I will if I have to."

I closed my eyes.

"Noted," I said.

I hung up.

I sat in the dark for a long time. Then I opened my laptop. Created a new folder. Titled it *Evidence*.

I added the hospital records. The phone logs. The recording of my father's call I'd started making three weeks ago.

I saved everything. Backed it up. Backed it up again.

Then I went to bed.

I didn't sleep. But I lay there. In the dark. Listening to the sound of my own breathing.

Stronger than I thought.
