Chapter 2

Sunday brunch was Whitney's favorite weapon.

The call came at eleven-thirty, exactly when I was plating the poached eggs I'd made for myself. Damien was at the club. Or with Kira. The distinction didn't matter anymore.

I set down my fork and answered on the second ring.

"Lauren." Whitney's voice had that particular brightness she used when she was about to draw blood. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything important."

I looked at my eggs getting cold on the counter. "Of course not, Whitney. How are you?"

"Concerned, actually." A delicate pause. "About you, dear."

I pulled out my phone with my free hand and opened the recording app. Tapped the screen twice. The Sunday calls had become routine intelligence gathering six months ago, once I'd realized Whitney couldn't help herself—she always said too much when she thought she was winning.

"That's kind of you," I said softly.

"Damien mentioned you've been looking tired lately." Whitney's tone was honey over glass. "And frankly, darling, I can see why he might be... distracted. A man needs a wife who takes care of herself. Who makes an effort."

I caught my reflection in the microwave door. I'd been up since five-thirty for my morning run. My hair was pulled back in a neat ponytail. I was wearing the kind of casual Sunday dress Whitney herself had once complimented.

"I'll try harder," I murmured.

"I know you will." She sighed, the sound perfectly calibrated. "It's just that there are expectations, you understand. The Cunningham name means something. And after five years without children..."

She let the sentence hang there.

I gripped the phone tighter. "We've talked about this. Damien said we should wait until—"

"Damien says a lot of things." Whitney's voice sharpened. "But a woman your age should be thinking practically. About the future. About what happens when a marriage doesn't provide what it promised."

The eggs were definitely cold now. I turned away from them.

"I don't understand," I said, making my voice small.

"Don't you?" A pause. "Lauren, dear, I'm going to be direct because I care about you. Damien and I spoke with Martin Sorensen last week. Do you know who that is?"

Martin Sorensen. One of Manhattan's most aggressive divorce attorneys. I'd had his name in my files for eighteen months, ever since Elliot Cunningham's assistant had accidentally cc'd me on a calendar invitation.

"No," I whispered.

"He's a family attorney. A very good one." Whitney's tone turned almost gentle. "We wanted to understand your options. In case you ever needed to... transition to a more appropriate situation."

My heart was pounding, but my hand stayed steady on the phone.

"Options?"

"A divorce, Lauren." She said it like she was suggesting a spa day. "An amicable separation. You'd want to be reasonable, of course. Accept responsibility for the debts you've accumulated—"

"What debts?" The words came out before I could stop them.

Whitney made a soft sound of concern. "Oh, darling. The credit cards. The personal loans. Surely you've been keeping track? Damien mentioned you'd been managing the household accounts."

I closed my eyes. The forged signatures. The shell company transfers. The systematic construction of a paper trail that would make me liable for Damien's gambling losses—half a million dollars funneled through accounts bearing my name, my social security number, my forged authorization.

I'd been documenting every fraudulent transaction for three years.

"I... I didn't realize it was that much," I managed.

"Nearly five hundred thousand." Whitney's voice dripped sympathy. "But Martin assured us that in an amicable divorce, you could accept responsibility and Damien wouldn't pursue further damages. You'd be free to start over. Find a modest apartment somewhere. Something appropriate for your... situation."

Something appropriate. Translation: something far away from their world, their name, their carefully constructed social empire.

"I see," I said quietly.

"I knew you'd understand." Whitney sounded relieved. "You're a smart girl, Lauren. You know when it's time to be practical. We'll handle everything discreetly. No need for ugliness."

"When?" My voice cracked just right.

"Soon, dear. Very soon. Damien will discuss the details with you when the time is right." A pause. "You'll want to start thinking about where you'll go. Perhaps back to your father's house? Though I suppose at your age that might be awkward."

I pressed my free hand flat against the counter. Felt the cool marble under my palm.

"Thank you for telling me," I whispered.

"Of course, darling. I only want what's best for everyone." Whitney's smile was audible. "Enjoy the rest of your Sunday."

The line went dead.

I stood there for ten seconds. Twenty. Then I opened my laptop, pulled up the secure drive, and cross-referenced the financial conspiracy file I'd been building.

Every forged signature. Every fraudulent transfer. Every shell company Damien had used to move his gambling losses into my name. I had the original documents. The metadata. The bank security footage of Damien and Whitney entering the private wealth management office together on three separate occasions.

I opened a new message to Devon.

*Whitney just confirmed timeline for debt transfer execution. They're moving faster than anticipated. Recommend we accelerate final evidence collection and prepare tactical deployment within two weeks. I'm ready.*

I hit send.

Then I threw away my cold eggs and started preparing Damien's favorite dinner.

He'd be home eventually. And when he arrived, I'd smile and ask about his day and pretend I didn't know that the cage he thought he was building had been mine all along.
