When My Husband Chose My Half-Sister Over Our Baby

9.3 / 10.0
She spent three weeks perfecting the night—rare Hemingway, candlelight in the penthouse, Bordeaux on ice, black silk flown in from Paris. At seven, she texted Elias to come home. He claimed he was running late. She waited while wax pooled and the wine lost its chill, refreshing her phone like a fool. Then the pictures arrived: her husband beaming beside her half-sister, palm cradled over the swell of a child he'd sworn he never wanted with her. Their anniversary. Her baby. One night cracked every vow wide open.

When My Husband Chose My Half-Sister Over Our Baby Chapter 1

I spent three weeks planning this anniversary. Three weeks hunting down a first-edition Hemingway because Elias once mentioned loving *The Sun Also Rises* in college. I set candles around the penthouse. I chilled the Bordeaux he likes, the one that costs more than most people's rent. I wore the black silk dress he bought me in Paris.

At seven, I texted him: *Everything's ready. Hurry home.*

He replied five minutes later: *running late, don't wait on dinner.*

I waited anyway. I sat at the table and watched the candles burn down. The wine got warm. I checked my phone every few minutes. At eight-thirty, I called. It rang twice and went to voicemail. I called again at nine. Straight to voicemail.

By ten, the candles were puddles of wax.

When the door finally opened, I stood up so fast my chair scraped the floor. Elias walked in, loosening his tie. His hair was perfect. His suit was perfect. He smiled at me like nothing was wrong.

"Sorry, babe," he said. "Client emergency. You know how it is."

I crossed the room and stopped in front of him. That's when I smelled it. Perfume. Floral and sweet, clinging to his collar. Not mine. I wear something darker, woodsy. This was young. Cheap.

"What client?" I asked.

He blinked. "What?"

"What client kept you three hours past dinner on our anniversary?"

His jaw tightened. Just for a second. Then he smiled again, smooth and easy. "The Langford merger. I told you about it last week."

He hadn't. I would have remembered.

"You smell like perfume," I said.

"I was in a conference room with six people, Dalia. One of them probably wore perfume." He kissed my forehead. "I'm sorry I'm late. Let me make it up to you."

He walked past me toward the bedroom. I stood there, frozen, my hands clenched at my sides. The lie sat between us like smoke.

I picked up his coat from the chair. I was going to hang it up. That's all. But when I lifted it, something heavy swung in the pocket. I reached in and pulled out a set of keys.

Brass. Old-fashioned. With a leather fob stamped with a logo I recognized immediately.

My breath stopped.

It was the logo of the locksmith who installed the original locks on my mother's brownstone. The one she bought with her own money before she married my father. The one she left to me when she died.

I turned the keys over in my palm. My hands were shaking.

Elias didn't have keys to that house. I never gave him any. The brownstone was mine. My mother's gift. My sanctuary. The one place my father and his mess couldn't touch.

I set the keys on the counter. I didn't say anything. I walked into the bedroom and watched Elias undress. He asked if I was coming to bed. I said I was tired. He fell asleep in minutes.

I waited until his breathing went deep and steady. Then I got dressed, grabbed the keys, and left.

The brownstone was twenty minutes away. I drove with the windows down, gulping cold air, trying to slow my heartbeat. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe he was holding them for someone else. Maybe there was an explanation.

But when I pulled up to the curb, every window was lit.

I sat in the car, staring. My mother used to leave one lamp on in the living room. Just one. Now the whole house glowed like a party was happening inside.

I got out. I climbed the steps. I used my own key — the one I'd had since I was sixteen — and pushed the door open.

The first thing I noticed was the smell. Perfume. The same floral sweetness from Elias's collar. It soaked the air, thick and cloying.

The second thing I noticed was the furniture. Someone had moved my mother's reading chair. The curtains were different. There were shoes by the door. Women's shoes. Two pairs.

I walked into the living room.

A woman sat in my mother's window seat, the one overlooking the street. She was older, maybe fifty, with dyed blonde hair and a cashmere sweater. She held a cup of tea. She looked up at me and smiled.

"Oh," she said. "You must be Dalia."

I couldn't speak. I couldn't move.

On the sofa, another woman looked up from her phone. Younger. Mid-twenties. Dark hair, wide eyes, delicate features. She stared at me, and I stared back.

And I knew.

I knew because she had my father's nose. My father's sharp cheekbones. My father's mouth.

The older woman set down her tea. "I'm Marilyn," she said gently. "And this is my daughter, Lacey."

Marilyn Hicks. The woman who destroyed my mother.

Lacey Cunningham. My father's bastard.

They were living in my mother's house.

I heard a sound come out of my throat. It didn't sound human.

I grabbed the vase on the entry table and threw it. It shattered against the wall. Marilyn gasped. Lacey jumped to her feet.

"Get out," I said.

Marilyn stood, hands raised. "Dalia, please—"

"Get out of my house!"

I tore the new curtains off the rods. I swept the photos off the mantel. I grabbed a lamp and hurled it across the room. Lacey screamed.

Then the door flew open.

Elias ran in, breathing hard. He must have woken up. Must have seen I was gone. He looked at the broken glass, at me, at Lacey.

And then he stepped between us.

He put his body in front of hers.

"Dalia, stop," he said.

"Move," I said.

"You're scaring her."

"I'm scaring *her*?"

"You're acting like a maniac."

The word hit me like a slap.

Lacey pressed her face into his shoulder. One perfect tear slid down her cheek.

"Elias," she whispered. "Please."

He put his arm around her.

I looked at my husband. At the man who swore to protect me. At the man who was now protecting *her*.

"Get in the car," he said to me.

I didn't move.

"Now, Dalia."

I walked out. I got in the passenger seat. He drove me home in silence.

When we were halfway there, he finally spoke.

"Lacey came to me for help," he said. "She had nowhere else to go."

I stared out the window.

"She's your sister, Dalia. She needed—"

"Half-sister," I said.

"She needed help. I couldn't just turn her away."

"You put her in my mother's house."

"It was empty. You never use it."

"It's *mine*."

"And you of all people should understand what it's like to feel abandoned."

I turned to look at him. His face was calm. Reasonable. Like he was explaining something simple to a child.

He was using my mother's death against me.

I said nothing. I turned back to the window and watched the city blur past.

The silence between us felt like the earth cracking open.
