Chapter 1

The Plaza ballroom glittered like something out of a dream I'd stopped having years ago. Chandeliers dripped crystal light across white linen and gold-rimmed china. Three hundred guests in designer gowns and tailored suits turned their faces toward the head table, champagne flutes raised, waiting for the next toast.

I sat beside Everett in a dress he'd sewn himself. Ivory silk. French lace at the sleeves. He'd spent weeks on it, measuring me in our bedroom at midnight, fabric pooled around my bare feet. His fingers had traced my spine through the muslin mock-up. He'd kissed the nape of my neck and whispered that I was the only thing he'd ever made that mattered.

Now his hand covered mine on the tablecloth. Warm. Steady. His thumb traced circles against my knuckles.

I hadn't touched my champagne.

Veronica stood at the microphone in a dress the color of blood. My cousin. My mother's favorite. The girl who got my bedroom every summer, my college fund, my mother's smile.

"I've known Sawyer my whole life," Veronica said. Her voice carried that warm, honeyed quality she used when adults were watching. "We grew up together. Shared everything."

The room made soft approving sounds.

She lifted her champagne glass. The stage lights caught something on her wrist. A small tattoo. Black ink. A compass rose.

My breath stopped.

Everett had the same tattoo. Right side. Just above the pulse point. He'd gotten it our junior year at Columbia. He told me it meant he'd always find his way back to me.

I'd never asked if anyone else had seen it.

Veronica angled her wrist just slightly. Not enough to be obvious. Just enough.

"Sawyer deserves everything beautiful," she continued. Her eyes found mine across the room. "Everything she's ever wanted. And Everett—" Her voice caught. Perfect timing. "Everett is the kind of man who gives everything. Completely. Without holding back."

She smiled. The room smiled with her.

"So here's to the bride and groom. May you always know exactly what you have."

Guests erupted in applause. Crystal rang against crystal. Everett squeezed my hand and stood to acknowledge the toast. I watched his face. Watched for the flicker. The recognition. Anything.

He was smiling.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist. Hard enough to leave a mark. The small pain helped. It gave me something to focus on that wasn't the compass rose on my cousin's arm or the way she was looking at my husband.

The reception blurred after that. I cut cake. I danced. I smiled for photos. Everett's mother Margaret pulled me aside near the champagne fountain and told me I looked radiant. His uncle Jasper stood near the bar with a drink he wasn't touching, watching me with an expression I couldn't read. He'd called me Everett's most expensive accessory once at a family dinner. I'd pretended not to hear.

Veronica found me in the hallway outside the restroom.

"Beautiful ceremony," she said.

I looked at her wrist. She didn't bother hiding it now.

"When did you get that?" I asked.

She glanced down like she'd forgotten it was there. "Oh. This? A few months ago. Do you like it?"

"It's the same as Everett's."

"Is it?" She tilted her head. "I hadn't noticed."

She walked away before I could respond. Her heels clicked against marble. The sound echoed.

I went back to the reception. Back to the head table. Back to Everett's hand covering mine.

Two months later, the video arrived.

No message. Just a file. I opened it in our kitchen while Everett was at the office. The footage was clear. High quality. A hotel room I didn't recognize. Veronica's red dress pooled on the floor. Everett's jacket on a chair. The rest I watched without sound. I didn't need it.

I watched it twice. Then I deleted it. Then I sat at the kitchen counter until the sun went down.

When Everett came home, I was still sitting there.

"Sawyer?" He set his briefcase down. "What's wrong?"

I looked at him. At the man who'd walked four miles through snow to bring me hand warmers our freshman year. Who'd paid for my meals for an entire semester without telling me. Who'd said I love you under a streetlamp on 116th Street like he was confessing something sacred.

"I got a video today," I said.

His face didn't change. Not at first. Then something shifted behind his eyes. Something that looked like calculation.

"Sawyer—"

"Don't."

He crossed the kitchen in three steps. Dropped to his knees in front of me. Grabbed my hands.

"It didn't mean anything," he said. "I swear to God it didn't mean anything."

"Then why?"

He didn't answer. He stood. He walked out.

I heard his car start. Heard gravel spray as he reversed too fast.

He came back two hours later. His knuckles were split. There was blood on his shirt.

"I broke her wrists," he said.

I stared at him.

"Both of them. She'll never—" His voice cracked. "She'll never touch me again."

Then he picked up a champagne flute from the counter. One of the wedding crystal we hadn't put away yet. He smashed it against the marble. Picked up a shard. Dragged it across his own forearm.

Blood hit the floor in thick drops.

"I'll carve her out of me," he said. "I'll cut her out. Just don't leave."

I grabbed a kitchen towel. Pressed it against his arm. Called 911.

In the ambulance, he held my hand with his good arm. His blood soaked through my jeans.

"I love you," he whispered. "Only you. I swear."

I believed him.

I believed the blood was proof.

Six months later, I peed on a stick in the bathroom of our penthouse. Two lines. Clear and immediate.

I sat on the edge of the bathtub and pressed both hands against my stomach. Nothing showed yet. But something was there. Someone.

I started a research journal that night. Logged every milestone. Folic acid intake. Fetal development week by week. I redesigned the spare room in soft greens and whites. Bought a mobile with tiny moons and stars.

I hadn't told Everett yet. I was waiting for the right moment. The perfect moment.

I wanted to see his face light up the way it used to. Back when we were twenty and everything was still clean.
