Chapter 3

The flowers started arriving every morning at seven.

Roses. Peonies. Orchids in glass boxes. They lined the hallway outside my apartment door like a funeral. My neighbors stopped making eye contact. The building manager called twice. I told him to throw them out. He said Mr. Hunt had prepaid the delivery service for six months.

I changed my locks again.

That night, Gideon showed up at midnight.

I heard the knock and knew. Three sharp raps. A pause. Three more. The same pattern he used to use when he came home late and didn't want to startle me.

I stood on the other side of the door and waited.

"Freya." His voice came through muffled. Careful. "I know you're there. Please. Just let me explain."

I said nothing.

"I didn't know about the baby. If I had known—" He stopped. I heard him breathe. "I would have stayed. I would have been there. You have to believe that."

I pressed my palm against the door. Felt the vibration of his weight shifting on the other side.

"I'm sorry," he said. "God, Freya, I'm so sorry. I'll do anything. Just tell me what you need."

I turned the deadbolt. Loud. So he'd hear it.

Then I walked back to my desk and put my headphones on.

He stayed out there for forty minutes. I timed it. When the knocking finally stopped, I looked through the peephole. The hallway was empty except for a white envelope on the floor.

I left it there until morning. Then I threw it away without opening it.

---

My attorney called on a Wednesday.

"He's not signing," she said. "And he's filed a counter-motion. He wants to delay the proceedings for mandatory marriage counseling."

I was standing at my kitchen counter. I set my coffee down.

"On what grounds?"

"Reconcilable differences. He's arguing the separation is premature."

I laughed. It came out sharp. "We've been separated for two months."

"I know. It's a stall tactic. But it'll add time to the process."

I closed my eyes. "How much time?"

"Three months. Maybe four."

"Fine," I said. "File whatever you need to file. I'm not going to counseling."

She paused. "Freya, there's something else. He's been talking to the press."

My stomach dropped. "What?"

"Page Six ran a piece this morning. 'Hunt Heir Fights for Marriage After Wife's Sudden Departure.' It's—" She hesitated. "It's positioning him as the injured party. Generous husband giving his wife space to heal."

I didn't say anything.

"I can issue a statement," she offered.

"No." My voice came out flat. "Let him talk. I have work to do."

I hung up.

Then I sat down at my desk and opened the file I'd been avoiding for three weeks.

*Unborn.*

The design collection I'd started the week after the hospital. White space. Negative shapes. Furniture that suggested presence through what wasn't there. A chair with one leg missing. A table that ended mid-surface. A lamp with no shade.

It was the most honest thing I'd ever made.

And I hated it.

I stared at the renderings. My hand hovered over the delete key. I could pull it from the competition. Submit something safer. Something that didn't feel like bleeding in public.

But then I thought about Gideon. About his voice through the door. *I would have stayed.*

Liar.

I saved the file. Exported it. Attached it to the submission portal.

My finger hovered over 'send.'

I counted to ten.

Then I clicked.

---

Two weeks later, I got the call.

I was at a coffee shop in Williamsburg. Laptop open. Cold brew going warm. My phone buzzed. Unknown number. I almost didn't answer.

"Freya Shaw?"

"Yes."

"This is Sylvia Crane. I'm the chair of the judging committee for the New York Design Collective competition."

I sat up straight.

"We'd like to inform you that your collection 'Unborn' has been selected as a finalist. We were—" She paused. "We were very moved by the work. It's extraordinary."

I opened my mouth. Nothing came out.

"The finalist showcase is in three weeks," she continued. "You'll present to the full committee and a live audience. Details will be sent to your email. Congratulations, Ms. Shaw."

She hung up.

I sat there. Stared at my phone. Read the call log twice to make sure it was real.

Then I looked at my laptop screen. At the rendering of the chair with one missing leg.

I thought about the night in the hospital. The forty-two tiles. The way no one came.

I thought about Gideon's flowers rotting in the hallway.

And I smiled.

It wasn't a happy smile.

But it was mine.

---

What I didn't know—what I wouldn't know until the night of the showcase—was that Margot Simmons had submitted a collection too.

Pale neutrals. Bone white surfaces. Incomplete geometries that looked almost exactly like mine.

She'd taken my file. Stripped the metadata. Changed just enough to claim originality.

And she'd been selected as a finalist.

When I found out, I didn't panic.

I just opened my laptop.

And I started gathering evidence.
