Chapter 2

The story broke on a Tuesday. By Wednesday it was everywhere.

*Nadia Howell: The Ice Queen Who Stole a Child.* That was the headline on Page Six. Another site called me "vindictive," said I'd "ripped Leo from his father in the dead of night." Someone had leaked a photo of the town car pulling away from the penthouse. Someone had leaked the flight manifest.

Marcelo's attorney filed for joint custody two days later. The petition used the word *alienation* four times. It said I had removed Leo from California "unilaterally," that I was "weaponizing distance" against a loving father.

I read it standing in my mother's kitchen, coffee going cold in my hand.

"He didn't write that," my mother said, watching my face. "His lawyer did. But he signed it."

"I know."

"We'll counter by Friday." She was already dialing. "This is a media war before it's a legal one. He knows that. He's better at it than we think."

She wasn't wrong. Marcelo had always been good on camera. He gave one interview — soft-voiced, eyes wet, sitting in a borrowed living room that looked like a therapist's office — and said, "I just want to see my son." It went viral in six hours.

I didn't respond. My attorney said silence was strategy. I told myself that. I almost believed it.

The supervised call was scheduled for Thursday at four. Court-mandated, monitored software, a caseworker logged in on a separate screen. Leo sat at the kitchen table in his dinosaur shirt, swinging his legs, Blue tucked under one arm. I sat just out of frame, close enough to see, far enough to not be seen.

"Hi, Daddy," Leo said, when the call connected.

Marcelo's face filled the screen. Flushed. Eyes glassy. A glass of something amber sat within reach on the table behind him.

"Hey, buddy," he said, too loud. Then, quieter, uglier: "You seen the news, Leo? You seen what your mom's doing to me?"

Leo's legs stopped swinging.

"I don't — " Leo started.

"She's trying to take you away from me. Forever. You understand that? She's telling everyone I'm a bad dad." His voice cracked upward, sharp. "It's all her fault. You hear me? All her fault."

"Daddy—"

"You gotta tell the judge you want to live with me." He leaned into the camera, his face distorting, too close. "You gotta say it. Or I swear to God, Leo, I'm not gonna—" He caught himself, but not soon enough. "If you don't tell them, I won't love you anymore. You understand? Is that what you want?"

Leo didn't make a sound. That was the worst part. He just went very still, the way he does when something is too big to hold, and then he slid off the chair and was gone before I could catch him.

I ended the call. My hands weren't shaking. I noted that, distantly, the way you notice a stranger's coat.

My mother found him twenty minutes later, curled under his bed, Blue crushed against his chest, sobbing in that airless, silent way that scares you more than screaming ever could. She didn't try to pull him out. She just lay down on the floor next to the bed frame and put her hand where he could reach it if he wanted to.

He wet the bed that night. And the night after.

The caseworker's software had recorded everything — video, audio, timestamp. My attorney sent me the file at eleven that evening with one line: *Call me when you've listened.*

I waited until the house went quiet. Two in the morning. I sat at the desk in the guest room with headphones on and my mother's legal pad still open beside my laptop, and I played it.

I listened once, and made myself sit through every second, every slurred syllable, every place his voice broke into something almost pleading and then, in the next breath, into something cruel.

I listened a second time, with a pen, writing down timestamps.

I listened a third time with my eyes closed, just to be sure I hadn't imagined the worst of it. I hadn't.

Then I picked up my phone and called my attorney. She answered on the second ring, like she'd been waiting.

"I want it attached to an emergency motion," I said. My voice came out flat, precise, the voice I used to use to kill bad press before sunrise. "Sole custody. Full stop. No more supervised calls until the court reviews it."

"I'll have it filed by nine a.m."

"Good."

I hung up. I closed the laptop. I sat in the dark for a long moment, listening to the house breathe around me — my father's steady footsteps somewhere upstairs, the hum of the refrigerator, Leo's door creaking faintly down the hall where my mother had left it open a crack.

Then I went into the bathroom, turned the shower on as hot as it would go, and stood under the water until the sound of it was the only sound left. That was where I let myself cry. Where no one could hear it. Where it couldn't be used against me.
