Chapter 3

For the next three days, Kaden tried everything.

My phone buzzed constantly with unknown numbers. He called from his gallerist’s phone, from a deli landline, and from a burner number. When I didn't answer, he left voicemails.

His voice shifted by the hour. First, he was weeping. *“Fiona, please. It was a mistake. Samara meant nothing. I love you.”*

Then, he got angry. *“You’re destroying this family over money! You’re heartless, Fiona. You always were. You care more about numbers than human beings!”*

On Wednesday morning, a florist tried to deliver two dozen white roses to the surgical wing. I told the nurse at the front desk to drop them straight into the biohazard bin.

Two hours later, hospital security called up to my office. Kaden was in the main lobby, demanding to see his wife. The head of security, a retired cop named Marcus, knew me well. He walked Kaden out to the sidewalk and told him not to come back.

I didn't call Kaden. I didn't text him.

Instead, I spent Wednesday evening in a conference room in Midtown with a divorce attorney. The retainer was paid. The petition for dissolution of marriage was drafted. We attached the five-year financial ledger as Exhibit A. The forensic audit was underway.

I thought the battle would stay in court.

I was wrong.

Patricia knew her family's gravy train was derailed. Without my salary, the SoHo studio was gone. The mortgage on the Brooklyn townhouse was due in ten days. And when a parasite realizes the host is pulling away, it gets desperate.

Thursday morning was peak rush hour at NewYork-Presbyterian.

The main lobby was packed with patients, nurses, doctors, and visitors. I had just stepped off the staff elevator on the ground floor, holding a hot coffee. I wore my clean navy scrubs under an open white coat.

A piercing shriek ripped through the marble hall.

“There she is! That’s her!”

Heads turned instantly. The chatter in the lobby died down.

Patricia Scott came marching through the revolving doors. Her eyes were bloodshot, and her hair was a wild, messy nest. She wore an expensive camel coat—one I had bought for her last Christmas. Right beside her was Denver.

Denver held her phone at chest height, camera aimed directly at me.

“Murderer!” Patricia screamed at the top of her lungs. She pointed a shaking, manicured finger at my chest. “You’re an unfit doctor! You butcher people on the table because you don't have a heart!”

The lobby went dead silent. Everyone froze. Orderlies stopped pushing wheelchairs. Visitors lowered their coffee cups.

“Mom, keep going, we’re live,” Denver said loudly. She spun the phone toward the crowd, then back to me. Her voice was pure drama. “Over fifty thousand people are watching, guys. This is Dr. Fiona Sanders. Renowned heart surgeon. Behind closed doors, she abuses her family, abandons her dying father-in-law, and cuts corners in the operating room!”

A few yards away, two local news reporters from Channel 4 were standing near the gift shop. They were setting up for an unrelated press conference about a new pediatric ward. The moment Patricia started shouting, their cameraman pivoted. The red tally light blinked on.

My pulse jumped once, sharp in my throat. Then my surgical training took over. Cold. Controlled. Steady.

I didn't yell. I didn't run.

“Patricia,” I said, my voice low and firm. “Leave this building immediately.”

“No! Everyone needs to know what you are!” Patricia lunged forward, stopping just three feet from me. Spit flew from her lips. “She killed a patient last month! She was too busy thinking about money to check the monitors! She threw my son out on the street because she’s greedy! She’s a monster with a scalpel!”

Bystanders began pulling out their phones. Whispers rippled across the marble floor like dry leaves.

*“Did she say she killed someone?”*

*“Isn’t that Sanders? The top surgeon?”*

“Security!” a voice barked.

Marcus and three other guards rushed from the security desk. They moved fast, surrounding Patricia and Denver.

“Ma’am, step back right now,” Marcus ordered, grabbing Patricia’s arm.

“Get your hands off me!” Patricia shrieked, flailing wildly. “She’s paying you off! She pays for everything! She’s a fraud!”

“Don't touch my mother!” Denver yelled, shoving her phone into Marcus’s face. “I’m recording this! We’re going to every news outlet in New York! The Scott family will not be silenced!”

Marcus didn't argue. He and another guard grabbed Patricia by the elbows and hauled her toward the glass doors. The other two boxed Denver in, steering her backward.

Denver kept screaming, her screen glowing bright, until the sliding doors closed behind them.

The lobby stayed quiet for five long seconds. Then the noise rushed back in. Louder this time.

The Channel 4 reporter was already speaking into a microphone. Visitors were staring at me, whispering behind their hands.

My phone in my coat pocket vibrated. Then it vibrated again. And again.

A notification flashed on the lock screen.

*Alert: ‘Dr. Fiona Sanders’ trending on local Twitter.*

Another vibration. It was an email from the hospital administration.

*Subject: Urgent - Ethics Committee Preliminary Review.*

My chief resident, Naomi Reyes, came running around the corner. Scrub nurse Ellie Park was right behind her, breathing hard.

“Dr. Sanders!” Naomi’s face was pale. “We just heard. Are you okay? Who were those people?”

“They were filming,” Ellie said, her hands shaking with anger. “That little brat was streaming the whole thing. Fiona, people are already commenting online.”

I looked at the revolving doors. Through the glass, I saw Patricia on the sidewalk outside, still yelling at Marcus. Denver was still holding the phone high, framing the hospital entrance.

They thought they could break me with noise. They thought if they dragged my name through the dirt, I would give in and write another check just to make it stop.

They had no idea who I really was.

I reached down with my right hand.

I caught the band of my Baume & Mercier watch. I slid the leather strap tight and clicked the clasp against my wrist.

My fingers didn't shake.

“Let them stream,” I said quietly.
