Chapter 1

The surgery lasted seven straight hours.

It was a complex aortic valve replacement on a sixty-year-old man. When I finally peeled off my gloves, my fingers were stiff, and my scrub top was soaked in sweat. Most surgeons would have gone home to sleep. But Kaden’s first big solo exhibition opened tonight in Chelsea.

I funded every single piece of it. The venue rental, the champagne, the framing, even the imported oil paints on the canvases.

I didn't even have time to change. I just threw my wool coat over my hospital scrubs and caught a cab downtown. I smelled like betadine and surgical disinfectant. It was the smell of saving a life, but as soon as I stepped inside the gallery, I felt out of place.

The room was packed with Manhattan’s art crowd. Everyone wore silk, black velvet, and expensive perfume.

I spotted Kaden near the center. He wore the tailored charcoal suit I bought him for his birthday. He looked handsome. But he wasn't alone. A young woman stood beside him, her hand resting lightly on his forearm. She wore a backless emerald slip dress. Her neck caught the gallery lights with a dazzling diamond panther necklace.

I walked over, my heart giving an eager little flutter. “Kaden,” I said softly.

He turned. His smile dropped the second his eyes hit my scrub pants. His nostrils flared. He stepped back half an inch, wrinkling his nose.

“Fiona,” he muttered. “You smell like a hospital.”

A tall older man holding a wine glass stepped up beside him. “Kaden, who is this?”

I opened my mouth to say *I’m his wife.*

Kaden spoke first. He pulled the girl in the emerald dress closer to his hip. “Julian, this is Fiona Sanders. She’s a generous donor from the medical community. Fiona, this is Samara Woods, my muse, and Julian Cross, my gallerist.”

*A donor.*

He didn't say the word *wife*. He didn't even look me in the eye.

Samara gave me a pitying little smile. Her fingers toyed with the sparkling panther at her throat. “Nice to meet you, Doctor. Thank you for supporting Kaden's vision.”

My chest went cold. It was like someone had emptied a bag of ice into my veins. I didn't scream. I didn't cause a scene. I simply nodded once, turned on my heel, and walked out into the cold Chelsea wind.

I took a cab straight back to my Upper West Side apartment. It was a pre-war penthouse, bought and paid for entirely under my name.

I sat at the kitchen island, opened my laptop, and pulled up my black card statements.

I scrolled through the recent charges. Studio rent in SoHo: $8,500. Art supplies: $3,200. And there it was, dated three days ago.

*Cartier Fifth Avenue. $72,000.*

A Panthère de Cartier diamond necklace. The exact piece hanging around Samara’s neck.

Around two in the morning, the front door clicked open. Kaden stumbled inside, smelling of cheap champagne and heavy floral perfume.

He tossed his keys on the marble counter. “You embarrassed me tonight, Fiona. Showing up in dirty scrubs. People were staring.”

I didn't blink. I turned the laptop screen toward him.

“What is this, Kaden?”

He glanced at the screen. His jaw tightened for a second, then he chuckled. It was a dry, dismissive sound.

“Are you spying on me now?” he asked, shaking his head. “You're so paranoid. God, you're impossible.”

“You bought your muse a seventy-two-thousand-dollar necklace on my card,” I said. My voice was completely flat.

“It’s networking, Fiona!” he snapped, stepping toward me with puffed-up anger. “Samara has five hundred thousand followers. She wears my work to high-fashion parties. She's my inspiration. You're too clinical to understand how the art world works. You don't have a creative bone in your body. All you care about is money.”

Five years. For five years, I listened to him tell me I was cold, that I lacked soul, that his genius needed patience.

This time, the words didn't cut. They just dried up whatever was left inside me.

“Be out by eight tomorrow morning,” I said.

He blinked, caught off guard. “What?”

“Pack your clothes. Get out of my apartment.”

“You’re being crazy,” he sneered. “You’ll regret this by tomorrow afternoon. You always do.”

I stood up, walked into the bedroom, and locked the door behind me. My hands were completely steady. I opened my phone and blocked his number.

Then I grabbed my coat and drove back to NewYork-Presbyterian.

I parked on the lowest level of the concrete garage. The engine hum died. The silence rushed in. And finally, sitting alone in the dark driver’s seat, the tears spilled over. I cried for the five years I had wasted. I cried for the blind trust I had given a parasite.

The sobs lasted five minutes. That was all I allowed myself.

I wiped my face with the back of my hand. I reached down and straightened the strap of my Baume & Mercier watch. It clicked into place against my wrist.

The tears were done.

For the next twenty-four hours, between surgical rounds and clinical notes, I didn't mourn. I worked.

I opened a blank presentation on my laptop. I pulled every digital record from the past five years. Every wire transfer to his SoHo studio. Every receipt for his imported linen canvases. Denver’s NYU tuition payments. Patricia’s secret kitchen renovation bills. Raymond’s car insurance.

Seven hundred and eighty thousand dollars.

I organized each invoice by date and category. I added high-resolution screenshots of the Cartier receipt and Kaden's public social media posts with Samara.

I built the slides with the cold, methodical focus of a surgeon prepping a chest cavity.

He thought I was just a donor.

I was about to show him what the bill looked like.
