Chapter 3

The next morning, the sky over Manhattan was the color of wet concrete.

I drove across the Brooklyn Bridge alone. My hands gripped the steering wheel, my knuckles white against the black leather. My belly pressed heavy against the seatbelt.

I took the elevator up to the fourth floor of the luxury building on Greenpoint Avenue.

Apartment 4B.

I didn't hesitate. I knocked twice.

The door swung open.

Stormi Lane stood there in a cream silk robe. Her hair was tied up in a messy bun. She held a mug of coffee.

When she saw me, her eyes went wide. She froze for two seconds. Then her chin lifted. That nervous surprise vanished, replaced by a cold, brittle smirk.

"Maya," she said. Her voice was too loud, too confident. "I wondered when you'd show up."

She didn't try to close the door. She wanted me to look inside.

So I looked.

It wasn't a mistress’s hideaway. It was decorated like a family home.

On the console table by the entryway sat a framed photograph. Bryce, smiling broadly, with Neo perched on his shoulders. Stormi leaned against his arm, laughing. On the kitchen counter, I saw two matching mugs. In the half-bath down the hall, pale blue towels hung from the rack, embroidered with *B & S*.

On the stainless-steel refrigerator, Neo’s crayon drawings were held up by alphabet magnets.

A happy little family. Built with my money.

"Bryce told me what you did last night," Stormi said, crossing her arms over her chest. "Throwing him out with security guards. How pathetic. You really think you can control him with your daddy’s trust fund?"

I stayed silent. I kept my face smooth as glass.

"Let’s stop pretending," she sneered, leaning against the doorframe. "Bryce never loved you. You were a business arrangement. A pretty, polite little heiress to make him look good. But I'm his real partner. Neo is his real family. He’s been planning to leave you for years."

Every word was meant to cut me. She wanted tears. She wanted me to scream and make a scene.

I didn't give her an inch.

I reached into my coat pocket. I pulled out a crisp, white envelope and held it out.

Stormi blinked at it. "What is that?"

"A certified notice from my attorney," I said. My voice was quiet and level. "This building was purchased through Apex Horizon LLC. The capital came directly from the Reed Family Trust. You have seven days to vacate the premises."

The smirk slid off her face.

She snatched the envelope, ripped it open, and skimmed the legal paper. Her hands began to tremble.

"No," she stammered. Her voice cracked. "No, this is Bryce's apartment! He gave this to me and Neo!"

"Bryce doesn't own it," I said. "I do."

"You can't do this!" Stormi shrieked. Her fake confidence shattered all at once. Tears spilled over her mascara. "Neo is five years old! You're throwing a child out on the street? Bryce promised me! He promised we would have this place!"

She took a step toward me, shaking the paper in my face. "I'll go to the tabloids! I'll tell everyone what kind of monster you are! The press will eat you alive!"

I didn't flinch. I didn't raise my voice. I looked right through her, just like I had done with Bryce.

"Seven days, Stormi," I said softly. "Pack your bags."

I turned around and walked down the hallway.

Behind me, she screamed Bryce's name. She slammed the door so hard the walls vibrated.

I rode the elevator down to the garage. My knees were shaking, but my spine was straight.

I got into my car, locked the doors, and sat back against the headrest.

I closed my eyes. I gave myself exactly thirty seconds of absolute silence.

Inside me, my daughter fluttered gently. I placed my warm hand against my belly and took one deep, ragged breath. Then I let it go.

The thirty seconds were up.

I picked up my phone and dialed Conrad Hale.

Conrad was a forensic accountant recommended by my father’s oldest partner. He was sixty years old, sharp as a razor, and lived to tear through fraudulent balance sheets.

"Maya," Conrad answered on the second ring. "I was just about to call you. I went through the Apex Horizon filings."

"Tell me," I said.

"It's bad, Maya. Worse than you think."

Conrad's voice was grim. Paper rustled on his end of the line.

"The five thousand a month for the Brooklyn condo? That was just his pocket change," Conrad said. "Bryce set up four different shell companies across Delaware. For the past four years, he's been inflating vendor contracts at Reed Capital. Catering, IT services, logistics. He skimmed ten to fifteen percent off every single invoice."

My breath caught in my throat. "How much?"

"At least three point two million dollars," Conrad said bluntly. "He funneled the cash into private accounts. And six months ago, he used half a million from those accounts to buy a suburban home in Cherry Hill, New Jersey."

I gripped the phone tightly. "Who owns the house in New Jersey?"

"Elena Lane," Conrad replied. "Stormi Lane’s mother."

A bitter chill rushed through my blood.

Bryce hadn't just stepped out on our marriage. He hadn't just made a stupid, drunken mistake.

He had run an organized, criminal enterprise inside my family's company. He had robbed my father. He had robbed me. And he had used our wealth to build an entire parallel dynasty for his mistress and her family.

"Maya? Are you still there?" Conrad asked.

"I'm here," I said.

My voice wasn't shaking anymore. The grief was gone. The hurt was gone. There was only ice left in my veins.

"Print every statement," I told him. "Trace every wire. Pull every contract Bryce ever signed. I want an airtight file on my desk by Monday morning."

"Are we going to the police?" Conrad asked.

"Not yet," I said softly. "The board meets on Wednesday. I want him to walk into that room thinking he still has a future."
