Chapter 3

The morning sun filtered through the training yard as I adjusted my stance, facing Ashley across the dirt circle. Her eyes gleamed with poorly concealed contempt as she circled me like a predator. Three days of sharing our home had only strengthened my resolve—each night, the crystals recorded hushed conversations and stolen moments between her and James when they thought I was asleep.

"Are you sure about this, Luna Olivia?" Ashley's voice carried a patronizing edge. "Combat training isn't typically in a Luna's skill set."

I smiled placidly, tightening the leather wraps around my wrists. "Every wolf should maintain their skills. Besides, I'd like to see what makes our future Beta so special."

The double meaning hung between us, but Ashley merely smirked, misinterpreting my words as naive admiration rather than calculated provocation.

"Don't worry, I'll go easy on you," she promised, dropping into a fighting stance.

I mirrored her position, deliberately leaving an opening in my defense. Luna growled inside me, understanding our strategy. As expected, Ashley lunged forward, aiming for my exposed side. I pivoted at the last moment, letting her momentum carry her forward as I sidestepped with a grace that momentarily startled her.

"Good reflexes," she muttered, recovering quickly.

We continued our dance across the yard, my movements deliberately measured—competent enough to maintain dignity but restrained enough to feed her ego. With each exchange, I maneuvered us across the training ground until we stood directly above where I'd buried one of my smaller crystals the previous night.

"You're stronger than you look," Ashley commented, breathing heavily as she pinned my arm behind my back. Her eyes dropped to the ground, noticing the slight discoloration where the dirt had been disturbed. "What's that?"

I twisted free from her hold, drawing her attention back to me. "Just some old training markers. They help me remember proper foot positioning."

She studied the ground for a moment longer, then shrugged. "Clever. Though you might want to work on your offensive moves if you ever want to truly defend yourself."

I nodded gratefully, as if receiving wisdom from a superior. "Perhaps you could show me sometime."

"Of course," she replied, her condescension barely masked by false warmth. "That's what pack sisters are for."

---

The sacred circle glowed with moonlight as the pack gathered for the monthly blessing ritual. James stood at the center, his ceremonial robes billowing in the evening breeze as he recited the ancient words. I knelt beside him, my silver mate crown—a delicate circlet embedded with moonstones—resting on the ceremonial altar.

As Luna of the Silver Crest Pack, it was my duty to distribute the blessed moonwater to each pack member. Ashley stood near the front, her eyes fixed on James with barely concealed hunger.

I lifted the crown, preparing to place it on my head as tradition dictated, when Ashley stepped forward.

"Let me help you, Luna," she offered loudly enough for nearby pack members to hear. Before I could respond, she took the crown from my hands, her fingers lingering on the sacred silver.

A collective gasp rippled through the gathering. The Luna's crown was not to be touched by anyone but the Alpha or Luna themselves—a tradition as old as pack law.

James froze mid-incantation, his eyes widening in alarm. Elder Maeve's disapproving scowl cut through the crowd like a knife.

I could have reacted with outrage. I could have invoked pack law and humiliated Ashley on the spot. Instead, I smiled serenely and inclined my head.

"Thank you, Ashley," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the suddenly silent circle. "Your eagerness to participate in pack traditions is commendable."

I accepted the crown from her now-trembling hands and placed it atop my head with practiced grace. "Though perhaps next time, observe before participating. Some traditions carry deeper meanings than they appear."

Ashley's face flushed crimson as murmurs spread through the gathering. James cleared his throat awkwardly and continued the ceremony, but the damage was done. Ashley had revealed her ignorance of sacred protocol, while I had shown nothing but gracious patience—the perfect Luna educating a younger wolf.

---

That night, after the ritual, I slipped into our bedroom while James was occupied with the elders. From the bottom of my jewelry box, I retrieved a small velvet pouch containing the silver pendant with its luminous moonstone center. James had tracked it across three territories during our first year together, presenting it to me before my first full moon shift as his mate.

"To guide you home," he had whispered then, fastening it around my neck with tender hands.

I hadn't worn it in years.

Deliberately, I placed the pendant atop his writing desk, positioning it where moonlight would catch the stone and make it glow. Then I retreated to our bed, a book open in my lap, waiting.

When James entered an hour later, his steps faltered as the pendant caught his eye. He approached it slowly, as if confronting a ghost.

"You found this," he said, his voice strained.

"I was organizing some old things," I replied without looking up from my book. "Do you remember when you gave it to me?"

His fingers hovered over the pendant, not quite touching it. "Of course. Your first full moon as my Luna."

"You said it would always guide me home." I finally raised my eyes to meet his. "Funny how things change."

Something flickered across his face—guilt, perhaps, or a shadow of the man he once was. He reached for my hand, his touch hesitant. "Olivia, I—"

"It's late," I interrupted gently, withdrawing my hand. "And I'm feeling the moon sickness tonight. We should rest."

For the first time in months, I felt him reach for our mate bond, that ethereal connection that had once been our sanctuary. I closed my eyes, blocking his attempt with a wall of indifference that left him standing alone by the desk, the moonstone's glow illuminating the confusion on his face.

As I turned away from him, Luna stirred within me, no longer howling in pain but watching with predatory patience. The trap was set. The crystals were recording. And the pendant—that symbol of a love I once believed unbreakable—now served as just another piece in the elaborate game I was playing.

James would soon learn that he had not merely betrayed a devoted mate. He had awakened something far more dangerous: a woman with nothing left to lose.
