Chapter 1

I had a gift for him.

That's why I went. A small thing — a silver cufflink set engraved with the date, tucked in a velvet box I'd carried in my purse all day. I wanted to leave it on his pillow. A surprise for the morning.

The hotel hallway was quiet. Our wedding suite was on the fourteenth floor, the one Dominic's family had booked months ago. I used my key card. The door clicked open.

The smell hit me first. Perfume. Not mine.

The bed looked like a storm had passed through it. Sheets twisted and shoved to one side. A pillow on the floor. And there on the nightstand — I had to look twice, because some part of my brain refused to process it — a used condom, tied off and left like it didn't matter. Like this was someone's apartment on a Tuesday night and not the room where I was supposed to become a wife in fourteen hours.

I stood there holding the velvet box.

The bathroom door opened.

Dominic came out first. His hair was damp. He had a towel around his waist and his eyes went wide for exactly one second before his face went flat and careful. Behind him, wrapped in the hotel robe — my hotel robe, the one I'd hung on the back of the door two days ago — was Tiffany Allen.

I knew her face. I'd seen it in old photos on his phone, the ones he said meant nothing. She was prettier in person. She knew it. She was smiling with her lips closed, watching me the way you watch a scene you've already rehearsed.

'Sutton.' Dominic's voice was calm. That was the thing that broke something open in my chest — how calm he was. 'What are you doing here?'

'I came to bring you something.' My own voice didn't sound like mine. Too steady. 'What is she doing here?'

He ran a hand through his wet hair. 'It was a goodbye. It meant nothing. You're overreacting.'

Those four words. *You're overreacting.* Said the way you'd tell someone they misread a menu.

I looked at the nightstand. I looked at Tiffany. I looked at the man I had loved for five years, the man whose child I was carrying, and I felt something happen behind my sternum — not breaking, exactly. More like a door swinging shut. Locking.

I set the velvet box down on the dresser. I didn't say anything. I walked out.

---

I went to the Nichols family suite because I still believed, stupidly, that accountability existed somewhere in that building.

Deborah Nichols opened the door in her silk robe, and I saw in her face immediately that she already knew. She'd known before I knocked. The way her chin lifted. The way her eyes went cold and pleased at the same time.

'You have some nerve,' she said.

I told her what I'd found. I kept my voice even. I said her son had been in that room with Tiffany Allen and I needed someone in this family to tell me what was happening.

What happened next was fast.

She shoved me. Both hands, hard, into the wall behind me. My head hit the plaster and my vision went white at the edges. Then she was screaming — something about Tiffany, about connections, about how I was *nothing*, how I had always been nothing, how I was not going to ruin her son's future with my dramatics —

The kick landed in my abdomen.

Deliberate. She looked at me when she did it.

I went down. The tile floor was cold through my dress. I heard Dominic's voice somewhere behind her — he was in the doorway, I could see his shoes — and he did not come forward. He stood there and he watched and he did not move.

I pressed my hand flat against the floor. I focused on the grout lines. I breathed.

My phone was in my hand. I don't remember reaching for it. I had Sloan on speed dial and she was through the door in under four minutes, which told me she'd been close. Later I would understand why.

---

The hospital room was very white.

The doctor's voice was quiet and careful and I understood what she was saying but the words seemed to arrive from a long distance away. Miscarriage. Three months. I'm so sorry.

Rayna came within the hour. My stepmother, composed and warm and red-eyed in a way she was trying to hide. She sat beside the bed and held my hand and didn't make me talk.

Somewhere across the city, my father had already cancelled a two-hundred-million-dollar contract. I knew because Rayna told me, quietly, and I saw in her face what it meant — that Charles Pierce had been informed, and had moved, and was waiting.

Sloan sat in the chair by the window. She hadn't left.

I stared at the ceiling for a long time.

Then I turned my head toward Sloan.

'Don't cancel the wedding,' I said.

She looked at me. Her jaw was tight. 'Sutton —'

'Don't cancel it.' I held her gaze. 'I need you to trust me.'

A long pause. She nodded once.

I reached for my phone. I pulled up the folder I had kept for two years without ever expecting to use it — Dominic's financial records, the irregularities I'd quietly noted out of a habit my father had drilled into me since I was sixteen. Wire transfers. Shell accounts. Numbers that didn't line up.

I opened a new call. My father picked up on the first ring.

'Tell me what you need,' he said.

I told him.

He moved.

I lay in that hospital bed in the white room and I organized the files with both hands, methodical and calm, and I did not cry once. There was nothing left in me that wanted to.
