Chapter 1

The cabin smelled like money.

That was the first thing I noticed every time I stepped onto the Coleman Gulfstream G700. Not the champagne. Not the leather. Money. That particular scent of cream-colored hides stitched by hand in Milan, of orchid arrangements flown in that morning, of cologne bottled in numbered runs of two hundred. I used to breathe it in and feel like I belonged.

Tonight it made my throat close.

I sat in the seat closest to the window, the one nobody else wanted because it was farthest from the bar. Outside, the Atlantic was a black sheet under a black sky. Inside, Manhattan's brightest were laughing too loudly, the way people laugh when they know someone is watching and want that someone to feel it.

Damon stood at the polished walnut bar with his back half-turned to me. Six feet two, dark suit tailored so precisely it looked painted on. His sleeves were rolled once at the cuff—a small, private habit he'd had since college. I used to think that detail was mine. That I was the only one who noticed.

Lena Fox was noticing it now.

Her hand rested on his forearm, right on the fold of that rolled cuff. Not gripping. Just resting. The way a woman rests her hand when she has done it a thousand times and expects to do it a thousand more. She leaned in, whispered something against the side of his jaw, and Damon laughed—not his boardroom laugh, not his cocktail laugh. The quiet one. The one I had spent ten years trying to earn and had heard maybe three times.

I swallowed and looked down at the velvet box in my lap.

It was navy. Small. Inside were cufflinks I had designed myself over six months of quiet meetings with a jeweler in the West Village. Platinum, brushed to a matte finish, and on the inner face of each one, engraved so small you had to hold them to the light—5.14.2004. The date of the Met gala. The date he pulled me out of a stranger's arms and tore a button from his own coat doing it.

I stood up.

My heels were quiet on the runner. Carter Mills glanced at me from his seat across the aisle and offered the smile he always offered me—a smile that was not quite a smile, more like the twitch of a man performing politeness in front of his boss's fiancée. I did not smile back.

"Damon."

He turned. Not fully. A quarter turn, chin over his shoulder, eyes still catching the last of whatever Lena had said.

"Sera." One syllable. Flat.

I held out the box. My hand was steady. I had practiced.

"I had these made. For the ceremony."

He took it. Opened the lid an inch. Closed it. Set it on the bar behind him next to a half-empty flute of Krug. He did not look inside.

"Thanks."

Then he turned back to Lena and said, "—so what did he do, then?" as if he were finishing a sentence I had never interrupted.

Lena's eyes flicked over his shoulder to me. She smiled. Small. Warm. The kind of smile you give a child who has drawn you a picture you don't intend to hang.

"Those are lovely, Sera," she said. "You have such thoughtful taste."

I walked back to my seat.

I don't remember the exact steps. I remember the sound of my own breathing, and the fact that the velvet box stayed on the bar, closed, next to a champagne glass someone would eventually clear away.

I had just sat down when Lena clapped her hands.

"Alright, my darlings." Her voice climbed above the cabin's chatter, bright as struck crystal. She had slid herself onto the arm of Damon's seat now, one leg crossed over the other, her red silk skirt riding up a careful inch. "We are five hours from paradise and I refuse to spend them sober and civilized. King's Court. Now."

A cheer went up. Carter Mills was already reaching for the deck in the console drawer as though he'd been waiting for the cue. Six other faces I had known for years lit with the specific gleam of wealthy people who have been promised entertainment at someone's expense and don't yet know whose.

I stayed where I was.

Damon looked at me.

It was the first time all evening. His eyes were the color of wet slate and utterly uninterested. The corner of his mouth lifted the smallest fraction.

"Play, Sera." A pause. "Don't be boring."

The cabin went quieter, just for a heartbeat. Everyone heard it. Everyone pretended they hadn't.

I rose.

I crossed the aisle to the low table where Carter was already fanning the deck. Lena scooted to make room, her thigh brushing Damon's knee. Her fingers—I saw this, I made myself see this—drifted from his wrist to the back of his hand as she reached for her own cards. Their eyes met. One beat. Two.

Then she looked away, laughing at something Carter said, and Damon lifted his glass, and no one else in the cabin caught it.

I caught it.

I sat down. I smoothed my skirt. I picked up my cards.

I smiled.

Outside the window, thirty thousand feet of dark air waited.
