Chapter 4

The first voice came from the left side of the room.

"Dance for us."

Low. Almost joking. The kind of thing a man says when he wants to see if the room will let him say more.

The room let him.

Another voice, closer: "Put on a show, sweetheart. Cover your tab."

Laughter. Real laughter this time, not the polite ripple from before. It moved through the tables like something catching fire.

I sat very still.

I had spent my whole adult life learning how to be invisible in rooms like this one. How to take up exactly the right amount of space. How to smile at the right moment and say nothing at the right moment and make powerful people feel comfortable without ever letting them see how clearly I was reading them.

Now the room was looking directly at me, and I had nowhere to disappear to.

Emmett stood near the stage with his champagne glass and his easy posture and his silence. That was the thing that cut deepest. Not the voices. His silence. He heard every word and he let it breathe, let it grow, let it fill the ballroom like music he'd commissioned.

Dalia was filming.

I saw the phone in her hand, the small cold glow of the screen. She wasn't even trying to hide it. She held it at her side, angled toward me, her smile sitting on her face like a piece of jewelry she'd chosen for the occasion.

A third voice. Then a fourth. The words got sharper. More specific.

The server appeared at my elbow with the second penalty glass.

I looked at it.

I picked it up and I drank it.

I drank it slowly, deliberately, the way you do something when you need the room to see that you have not broken. I set the glass down without a sound. I looked straight ahead.

But the wine was doing something.

The edges of the room were softening. The chandelier light was spreading, blurring slightly at the rim of my vision. The voices sounded like they were coming through water. My thoughts, usually so clean and ordered, were moving through something thick.

I knew what that meant.

I had known since the first glass, if I was honest. The taste had been slightly off. Not enough to be certain. Enough to be afraid.

I pressed my thumb against the face of my watch.

The metal was cool and slightly scratched and absolutely real. My father had fastened it around my wrist himself on my eighteenth birthday, in the kitchen of the New York townhouse, early morning, before anyone else was awake. He had said, quietly, the way he said everything that mattered: "So you always know what time it is."

I pressed harder.

The fog thinned. Just enough.

I pushed back my chair and stood. My legs were steady. I made sure of that before I let anyone see me standing. I picked up my clutch. I looked at no one.

"Excuse me," I said. To no one in particular. To the room.

I walked to the restroom.

---

The lounge was empty. I moved past the mirrors without looking at them and pushed into the farthest stall and turned the lock.

I stood with my back against the door.

In here, the ballroom was muffled. The voices, the music, the laughter—all of it reduced to a low hum behind marble walls. My hands were trembling. I looked at them like they belonged to someone else. I pressed them flat against my thighs and breathed.

Then I let myself feel it.

Not the room. Not Dalia's phone or Emmett's silence or the faces that had looked through me all night. The other thing. The thing underneath all of it.

Four years. Four years of coffee on Sunday mornings and his hand in mine at his family's events and the way he said my name when he was tired, soft and automatic, like I was something he'd always had.

It had been a performance. All of it. And I had been the audience.

My eyes burned. I did not cry. I pressed my thumb against my watch one more time, and I took out my phone.

I dialed.

It rang twice.

"Brooke." My father's voice. Just my name, but the way he said it—like he'd been waiting, like some part of him had always known this call would come.

"Dad." My voice came out steady. I was proud of that. "I need you to wire two hundred million dollars to my verification account. Right now."

A silence. Not hesitation. Something else. The silence of a man absorbing the full weight of what his daughter just said and what it means that she is saying it.

"Done," he said.

That was all. One word. I heard him set down something—a cup, ceramic against a hard surface, three thousand miles away—and then his voice again, quieter, directed away from the phone: four words to someone else in the room.

I didn't hear what he said to Serena. I didn't need to.

"I'm getting on the plane," he said.

"You don't have to—"

"Brooke." Quiet. Final. "I'm getting on the plane."

I closed my eyes.

"Okay," I said.

I ended the call. I stood in the locked stall with my trembling hands and my father's watch and the muffled sound of a room that had decided I was nothing.

I straightened my dress.

I unlocked the door.

I walked back out.
