Chapter 3

Wade didn't want me at the mixer.

He mentioned it on Tuesday. Casual. Like he was reading off a grocery list.

"Company thing Friday night. Just work people. You'd be bored."

I was folding laundry. I looked up and smiled. "Sounds fun. I'll come."

He blinked. "It's really not that interesting. Bunch of finance guys talking shop."

"I've never met your coworkers," I said. "We've been together a year. I should know the people you spend all day with."

His mouth opened. Closed. He couldn't say no. Not without a reason that made sense.

"Okay," he said finally. "Yeah. Sure."

I went back to folding. He stared at his phone for the next twenty minutes.

I spent two days preparing. Not the way I used to prepare for his work events — anxious, checking my reflection too many times, asking if my dress was okay. This was different. I laid out my clothes like I was suiting up for surgery. Black silk dress. Structured blazer. Heels that made me taller than Wade. Hair sleek and sharp.

I practiced my card tricks in the bathroom mirror until my hands moved without thinking.

Friday night, Wade checked his watch three times before we left.

"We don't have to stay long," he said.

"We'll stay as long as it's fun," I said.

The venue was a wine bar in Tribeca. Exposed brick. Low lighting. The kind of place that charged eighteen dollars for a glass of Pinot.

I walked in first. Wade followed half a step behind.

The room registered me before I said a word. Conversations paused. Eyes tracked. I felt it like a temperature shift.

Wade's coworker — tall guy, thinning hair — came over with a grin. "Wade! You made it. And this must be—"

"Elsie," I said. I shook his hand firmly. "Nice to finally meet you."

"Likewise. Wade talks about you all the time."

I glanced at Wade. He was staring at me like I'd grown a second head.

"Does he?" I said lightly.

We moved deeper into the room. Wade introduced me to people whose names I didn't bother remembering. I smiled. Laughed at the right moments. Touched Wade's arm when I spoke.

Then I saw her.

Blaire was near the bar. Red dress. Dark hair over one shoulder. She was talking to two men, laughing at something one of them said. Confident. Unhurried. Like she owned the room.

And on her wrist — my grandmother's emerald bracelet.

I stopped moving. Wade didn't notice. He was scanning the room, probably looking for an exit.

The bracelet caught the light. Jade stones set in gold. My grandmother wore it every day of her life. She left it to me in her will. It went missing from my jewelry box eight months ago. I'd torn the apartment apart looking for it. Wade said I probably misplaced it.

Blaire lifted her glass. The bracelet slid down her wrist.

I smiled. Took a breath. Crossed the room.

"Hi," I said warmly.

Blaire turned. Her eyes flicked over me. Assessing. She smiled back. Polite but cool.

"Hi."

"I'm Elsie. Wade's fiancée."

Her smile didn't change. But something behind her eyes shifted. "Blaire. I work with Wade."

"I've heard so much about you," I lied.

She tilted her head. "Have you?"

Wade appeared beside me. His hand landed on my lower back. Too firm. "Blaire. Hey."

"Wade," she said. Her voice was softer now. Almost teasing.

I looked at the bracelet again. Let my gaze linger.

"That's a gorgeous piece," I said. "Where'd you get it?"

Blaire glanced down. Touched the stones with one finger. "A gift."

"It's stunning," I said. Then I raised my voice slightly. "Hey, does anyone want to see a magic trick?"

The group around us turned. A few people laughed. Someone said, "Seriously?"

"I'm serious," I said. "I used to do close-up magic in college. I'm rusty, but I can still pull off a few."

Wade's hand tightened on my back. "Elsie—"

"Come on," I said brightly. "It'll be fun."

Blaire was watching me now. Curious. Maybe a little amused.

"I'll need a volunteer," I said. I looked right at her. "How about you?"

She hesitated. Then shrugged. "Sure."

I took her hand. Her skin was warm. The bracelet was cool against my fingers.

"This is beautiful," I said again. I turned her wrist gently. "May I?"

She nodded.

I unclasped the bracelet. Held it up so the group could see. The jade caught the light. A few people leaned in.

"Now watch closely," I said.

I borrowed a coin from one of the men nearby. Palmed it. Made it disappear. Reappear behind Blaire's ear. The group laughed. I smiled.

Then I did the move my grandmother taught me when I was twelve. The one that required perfect timing and absolute confidence.

I held the bracelet in my left hand. Made a show of placing it in my right. Closed my fist. Opened it.

Empty.

Blaire blinked.

I reached toward her hair. Pulled the bracelet from behind her shoulder. The group applauded.

I clasped it onto my own wrist. Turned so everyone could see.

"Some things," I said warmly, "just have a way of coming home."

The room clapped. Someone whistled.

Blaire's face froze. Her mouth opened slightly. She looked at Wade.

Wade's jaw was tight. His eyes were locked on the bracelet.

I touched his arm. "I'm going to get a drink. Want anything?"

He shook his head.

I walked to the bar. Ordered a glass of Pinot. Eighteen dollars. I didn't care.

When I turned back, Blaire was gone. Wade was talking to someone, but his eyes kept drifting toward the door.

I sipped my wine. The bracelet was cool and familiar against my wrist.

I didn't cry. I didn't shake.

I just smiled.
