Chapter 5

I knew she was coming before anyone announced it.

Not because of the Valkyrie intelligence channels, though those had flagged Madison's return flight three days ago. Not because of Braylen's suddenly rigid posture at the edge of the training field, the way his shoulders had gone tight the moment the black SUV rolled through the Ironvale gate.

I knew because Sable went completely silent.

Not the warm, settled quiet she'd been keeping lately. Something else. The kind of silence that happens right before a storm decides what it wants to be.

The joint training session had been scheduled for two weeks — a routine coordination exercise between Ironvale's rapid-response unit and two of Shadowveil's patrol teams. I was there in my capacity as Kylen's Beta-assistant, managing the coordination documentation. Kylen stood at the far end of the field with Declan, watching the drill formations with the particular stillness he brought to everything. He hadn't looked at me since we arrived. I hadn't looked at him either.

We were both very good at not looking at each other.

Madison stepped out of the SUV in a cream-colored coat that had no business being at a training field. Her hair was perfect. Her smile was the kind that arrived slightly ahead of her, like advance notice. She moved through the gathered wolves with the ease of someone who had never once questioned whether a room wanted her in it.

She found Braylen first. Touched his arm. Said something that made him straighten.

Then she found Kylen.

She crossed the field like she owned the ground under it. I watched her do it. I kept my face neutral and my tablet in my hands and I watched her walk up to the Lycan Prince of the Shadowveil Pack with the confidence of a woman who had already decided how this story ended.

"Prince Kylen." Her voice carried. It was designed to. "I've been looking forward to this. I think it's time we discussed the arrangement properly. I'd like to formally accept your courtship."

She said it in front of both packs' leadership. Every senior wolf on that field heard it. A few heads turned. Someone near the equipment rack stopped moving entirely.

Kylen's expression did not change.

Not a flicker. Not a shift. He looked at Madison the way he looked at territorial boundary reports — with complete, unhurried attention and absolutely no indication of what he intended to do about them.

"We'll schedule a meeting," he said. Clean. Final. And then he turned back to the drill formation like she'd mentioned the weather.

Madison's smile held. She was good at that. She turned, and her eyes found me across the field — a quick, practiced sweep that took in my position, my tablet, my proximity to Kylen's orbit — and something moved behind her expression. Not surprise. More like confirmation of something she'd already suspected.

She smiled at me. The warm kind. The kind that meant nothing.

I smiled back. The same kind.

Sable stayed silent the entire drive back.

---

I packed in nine minutes.

The room at the edge of Ironvale territory had never really been mine — a narrow space with a window that faced the wrong direction and furniture that belonged to the pack house inventory. I'd kept almost nothing here. A change of clothes. My mother's journal. The encrypted drive I never left anywhere I didn't control.

I put it all in one bag.

I didn't look around the room when I left. There was nothing to look at. Three years of my life in this territory and I'd made sure, very deliberately, to leave no marks on it. No photographs. No personal objects on the shelves. Nothing that would require a second trip.

I walked out the front door and didn't close it gently or hard. Just closed it.

The drive to Shadowveil took twenty minutes. The gate sentinels waved me through without question — I had standing clearance now, had for weeks. I parked, carried my bag inside, and took it upstairs to the room I'd been using as temporary quarters.

I started unpacking.

I heard him in the doorway before I saw him. That particular quality of stillness — the kind that had weight to it.

I kept folding the shirt in my hands.

"You're staying," Kylen said.

Not a question. He'd looked at the bag. At the way I was moving through the space — not like a guest, not like someone settling in for another week. Like someone who had made a decision and was done making it.

"I'm staying," I said.

I set the shirt on the shelf and turned around.

He was standing in the doorway with one hand braced against the frame, and he was looking at me with an expression I had been cataloguing for three weeks without letting myself name it. The composure was there — it was always there — but underneath it, something had gone very still in a different way than usual. Not controlled. Just — present.

The mate bond hummed between us.

Not the ghost of it, not the edge of it. The full, live-wire pull of it, the thing I had been managing and redirecting and carefully not acknowledging for three weeks, and it was right there in the six feet of air between us, and neither of us pretended not to feel it.

For the first time.

I held his gaze. He held mine.

"Okay," he said. Quiet. Like a door settling into its frame.

He pushed off the doorway and left. I turned back to my unpacking.

My hands were steady. Sable, finally, was not silent anymore. She made a sound low in my chest — not words, just warmth — and I let her.

---

The pack house went quiet around ten.

I found Kylen in the strategy room at ten-thirty, which was not surprising. He kept late hours. So did I. Waffles had followed me downstairs and was now sprawled across the floor between our chairs like a small, boneless declaration of neutrality.

I set my coffee down. Opened my laptop. Pulled up the Valkyrie territorial maps — the real ones, not the shell-company versions — and turned the screen toward him.

He looked at the maps. Then at me.

I didn't explain everything. He didn't ask for everything. That was the thing about Kylen — he understood the difference between information freely given and information extracted, and he had never once tried to extract anything from me.

I walked him through the territorial boundaries. The pack distribution. The alliance network I'd built over four years from nothing. He asked two questions, both precise, both about logistics rather than motive. I answered them.

At some point his hand came to rest on the table near mine. Not touching. Just — near.

He didn't move it away.

I didn't move mine.

Waffles twitched in his sleep, chasing something in a dream, and the small sound of it broke the silence just enough to make the silence feel different afterward. Softer. Like something that was holding something rather than hiding it.

I looked at the maps. Kylen looked at the maps. The strategy room was dark except for the laptop screen and the low light over the door, and outside the Shadowveil grounds were quiet under new snow.

I had spent three years in a house that never felt like mine.

I sat with that for a moment. Let it be true without doing anything about it.

Then I turned back to the maps, and Kylen leaned forward slightly to look at the northern boundary line, and his shoulder was almost touching mine, and I let that be true too.
