Chapter 3

The encrypted channel opened at 11:47 p.m.

I was sitting on the floor of my quarters with my back against the bed frame, laptop balanced on my knees, the rest of the room dark. Old habit. I'd done my most important work in the dark for years — less chance of someone walking past and seeing something they shouldn't.

Eugene picked up on the second ping.

"Status," I said.

"Compound infrastructure is exactly where you mapped it." His voice was low and steady, the way it always was. Eugene Romero did not do alarm. It was one of the things I valued most about him. "The rogue network's been rotating personnel on a three-week cycle. I've identified two contact points inside the supply chain. Another month and I'll have enough access to position myself at the compound level."

"Make it three weeks."

A pause. "That's aggressive."

"Renata's getting nervous." I'd felt it in the intelligence reports filtering through my Valkyrie channels — small things, the kind of small things that preceded larger moves. A rogue contract inquiry here. A shell payment there. Renata had always been most dangerous when she felt cornered. "I want you inside before she decides to accelerate her timeline."

"Understood." Another pause, shorter this time. "How are you?"

I looked at the dark ceiling. "Fine."

"Ophelia."

"Eugene."

"You're living in the same building as your fated mate," he said, with the particular calm of a man who had spent two years helping me understand the difference between a coping mechanism and a wall. "And you've been running on four hours of sleep since you arrived. So I'll ask again."

I was quiet for a moment.

"I'm managing," I said. Which was true. Which was also not the same as fine, and we both knew it.

"That's what I thought." He didn't push. He never pushed. "Be careful, Ophelia. Not just with Renata."

I closed the channel and sat in the dark for a while.

Sable was quiet. She knew when I needed the silence.

---

The first gift arrived three days after I'd settled into Shadowveil.

A pack courier delivered it to the front gate — a formal inter-pack package, addressed to me, bearing the Ironvale seal. Declan brought it to my desk himself, which meant he'd already noted the origin and was watching to see how I'd react.

I opened it without expression.

Inside was a bottle of wine. Expensive. The kind chosen by someone who'd asked a sommelier what impressive looked like rather than what I might actually want. There was a card in Braylen's handwriting — formal, stiff, the penmanship of a man who'd been taught to write for documents rather than people.

*I'd like to arrange a meeting. There are things I should have said.*

I set the card down. Looked at the wine. Looked at the card again.

Then I carried the bottle to the kitchen, set it on the communal table, and wrote *help yourselves* on a sticky note.

By lunch it was gone.

---

The formal meeting request came through official pack channels two days later. Inter-pack protocol required Kylen's office to acknowledge it. Declan brought me the paperwork with an expression that was carefully neutral.

"You don't have to attend," he said.

"I know." I signed the acknowledgment form. "Schedule it for Thursday. Thirty minutes. Conference room B."

Declan looked at me for a beat. "Conference room B seats twelve."

"I know that too."

Thursday came. Braylen arrived with his Beta and two senior warriors — a show of weight that was meant to look like routine protocol and didn't. He walked into conference room B and stopped when he saw me sitting at the far end of the long table, flanked by Tessa and Jonah, with a stack of territorial coordination files open in front of me.

I looked up.

"Alpha Stevens," I said. Pleasantly. The way you'd greet someone whose name you'd had to check before the meeting. "Thank you for making the drive."

Something moved across his face. Not anger — something rawer than that, something his wolf was pushing up through the careful Alpha composure. He looked at me the way a man looks at something he's only just realized he doesn't know how to reach.

I had seen that look before. I had no interest in it.

We spent twenty-eight minutes discussing a border patrol overlap that could have been resolved by email. Braylen kept trying to steer the conversation toward something personal. I kept steering it back. Every time his eyes lingered too long, I glanced at my files. Every time his voice dropped into something that wasn't quite his Alpha register but was reaching for it, I asked Tessa a logistical question.

At the twenty-nine-minute mark, I closed my folder.

"I think that covers the patrol issue," I said. "Safe drive back."

Braylen stood. His jaw was tight. "Ophelia—"

"Thank you for coming, Alpha Stevens." I was already looking at the next document.

He left. His Beta threw me a look I couldn't entirely read on the way out — not hostile, almost something like reluctant respect — and then they were gone.

Tessa waited until the door closed. "That was the coldest thing I've ever seen," she said, with what sounded like admiration.

"Border patrol overlap," I said. "Very straightforward."

---

The strategy session that afternoon ran long.

Kylen had been in it since two o'clock — a complex territorial negotiation with two allied pack representatives joining remotely, a dispute over resource rights along the northern ridge. I was in the back of the room, managing the documentation flow, when I noticed him move to the window.

It was subtle. He didn't leave the conversation. He kept speaking, kept his voice level, kept his attention on the remote screens. But he'd shifted his weight to the window ledge, one hand braced against the frame, and he was looking out at the Shadowveil grounds with the particular stillness of a man working through something that had nothing to do with northern ridge resource rights.

I'd seen it once before. I'd filed it then. Now I understood it better.

The session wrapped at five-fifteen. The remote participants signed off. The room emptied in the efficient way Shadowveil rooms always emptied — no lingering, no small talk, everyone with somewhere to be.

Kylen stayed at the window.

I gathered my files. Stopped at the side table where the afternoon coffee had been sitting since two o'clock, now cold and forgotten. I poured a fresh cup from the small carafe I'd brought up from the kitchen an hour ago — I'd started keeping one in the strategy room, because the sessions ran long and the staff ran better on caffeine, and that was a practical observation with no other meaning attached to it.

I crossed the room. Set the cup on the windowsill beside his hand.

Said nothing.

He looked at the cup. Then he looked at me.

I had already turned and was walking back to my seat.

I heard him pick it up. Heard the small sound of him drinking. The room was very quiet.

I sat down and opened my files and did not look at him again.

But my hands, flat on the table, were not entirely steady. And Sable, warm and certain in my chest, said nothing at all — which was how I knew she understood that some moments didn't need commentary.

Some moments just needed to be.
