Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning.

I know the exact time because I was staring at the clock on the far wall of the Ironvale Pack's great hall when it happened — a reflex, something to look at that wasn't the faces of three hundred wolves watching me stand in the center of the room like a piece of furniture being returned.

Braylen stood at the front. He didn't look at me once.

The ceremony was short. That was the thing nobody warned me about — how short it would be. Three years, and it took less than four minutes. He spoke the formal words in that flat, carrying Alpha voice of his, and then the mark on my neck went cold. Not painful. Just cold, and then hollow, like pressing your tongue to the space where a tooth used to be.

I kept my face still. I was good at that.

Around me, the pack held its collective breath. I could feel them looking — the ones who'd always called me the stand-in Luna just quietly enough that I wasn't supposed to hear, the ones who'd pitied me, the ones who'd resented me for taking up space that wasn't mine. Three years of whispers, and now they had their confirmation, delivered in public without a single word of apology or explanation.

I didn't give them anything to look at. I stood straight, kept my chin level, and when it was done, I walked out of the great hall the same way I'd walked into it.

Sable was quiet in the back of my mind. She'd gone very still the moment the bond severed, the way she always went still when she was deciding something.

*We're fine,* I told her.

She didn't answer. But she didn't argue either.

---

Braylen's office smelled like leather and cedar and the particular brand of expensive cologne he'd worn every day for three years. I knew that smell the way you know the smell of a place you never chose to live in.

He was already behind his desk when I came in. He didn't stand.

The check was sitting in the center of the desk like he'd placed it there before I arrived, which he probably had. $1,500,000. I could see the number from where I stood near the door.

"Sit down," he said.

I sat. Not because he told me to. Because I wanted to be comfortable for this.

He looked at me then — really looked, maybe for the first time in months. There was something in his expression I couldn't quite name. Not guilt. Braylen didn't do guilt. Something more like the look a man gets when he's about to make a business decision he's already rationalized.

"There's a situation," he said. "With Kylen Cole."

I waited.

"The Lycan Prince." He said it like I might not know who Kylen Cole was. "There are rumors he's arranging a mating with Madison."

My hands were folded in my lap. I kept them there.

"Madison doesn't want it," Braylen continued. "She's coming home. She'll be here within the month. I need someone inside Shadowveil's inner circle before she arrives — someone who can get close to Cole and make sure that arrangement doesn't move forward."

He slid the check across the desk.

"That's yours," he said. "For the three years. And for this."

I looked at the check. Then I looked at him.

He was watching me with that expression again — the one that had never once, in three years, asked what I wanted. He was assigning me a task. That was all this was to him. That was all I had ever been to him: a function. A placeholder. A tool he was now repurposing.

Deep in my chest, something that had been wound tight for a very long time went quietly, completely still.

I picked up the check. Folded it once. Tucked it into my jacket pocket.

"All right," I said.

He blinked. I think he'd expected negotiation. Maybe resistance. He'd never understood that I didn't waste energy on battles I'd already won.

"You'll need a cover," he started.

"I'll handle it."

He paused. "Ophelia—"

"Is there anything else?" I asked.

There wasn't. There never was, with Braylen. There was only ever the next thing he needed from me.

I stood, smoothed my jacket, and walked out.

---

I had one bag. I'd packed it the night before, after Braylen's Beta had delivered the formal notice of the rescission ceremony. Everything I owned that mattered fit into a single duffel — which told you something about three years of living in someone else's house.

I picked it up from the room that had been mine, took one look around at the neutral walls and the furniture I'd never chosen, and left.

I didn't look back at the pack house. There was nothing there I needed to see again.

Sable stirred as I crossed the Ironvale border, a low hum moving through my chest like a plucked string. She'd been doing that more and more lately — that particular frequency, the one I'd learned to recognize at fifteen and had spent years pretending I didn't.

Kylen Cole.

Even thinking his name did something to my pulse that I had no patience for right now.

I'd been sixteen the first time I understood what that hum meant. Fifteen when I'd first smelled dark cedar and winter rain and felt the world tilt sideways. I'd been on the ground, half-shifted and terrified, and he'd been there — a Lycan heir visiting on pack business, who had no reason to intervene and did anyway. He'd carried me to safety without a word. I'd recognized his scent as my fated mate's in the same breath I recognized that I could never, under any circumstances, let him know.

I'd kept that secret for seven years.

And now Braylen had just handed me a check and an order to walk straight into Kylen's world.

I got into my car. Started the engine.

*This isn't his mission,* Sable said quietly. *It's ours.*

"I know," I said.

I pulled out of Ironvale territory and didn't look back.

---

The Shadowveil pack house was exactly what you'd expect from a Lycan Prince — large, cold-looking from the outside, and staffed by people who assessed threats for a living. The sentinels at the gate clocked me before I'd finished parking.

I asked for Declan Ward.

He came out himself, which told me he was either curious or cautious. Probably both. He was tall, sharp-eyed, with the particular stillness of a Beta who'd learned to read situations before they developed. He looked at me the way people look at something they haven't categorized yet.

"Ophelia Richards," he said. Not a question.

"That's right."

"Former stand-in Luna of the Ironvale Pack." He said it evenly, no inflection. Just establishing what he knew.

"Also that," I agreed. "I'm here about the Beta-assistant position."

His expression didn't change. "There is no Beta-assistant position."

"There should be," I said. "Your administrative load has increased forty percent since the Shadowveil-Greymoor alliance formalized. Your current staff structure has a gap between your senior Beta functions and your pack coordination team. I can fill it."

A pause. "How do you know our administrative load?"

"I pay attention." I held his gaze. "Give me two weeks. If I'm not useful, I'll leave without an argument."

Declan studied me for a long moment. Then, without turning his head, he said, "Sir."

I hadn't heard anyone else approach. But when I looked past Declan's shoulder, Kylen Cole was standing in the doorway.

The smell hit me first. Dark cedar and winter rain, exactly as I remembered, exactly as it had been in every unguarded moment for seven years. Sable went absolutely electric.

I kept my face still. I was very good at that.

Kylen looked at me. His expression gave away nothing — not surprise, not recognition, not anything I could name. Just a long, level assessment that felt like being read in a language I hadn't known he spoke.

Then he nodded once.

Declan turned back to me with an expression that suggested he had questions he wasn't going to ask yet. "You start tomorrow," he said. "Six a.m."

"I'll be here at five-thirty," I said.

I drove to the nearest motel, sat on the edge of the bed, and let myself breathe for the first time all day.

Sable settled warm and steady in my chest.

*We're exactly where we're supposed to be,* she said.

For once, I didn't argue with her.
