Chapter 2

The cabin had one working lamp and a wood stove that smelled like someone else's winters. I sat at the table with my journal open to a page I'd annotated four years ago, back when I still thought knowing pack law was just something a good Luna did, not something a woman would need to save herself.

Article 9. Partition of territory upon dissolution of an unclaimed mate bond, proportional to documented contribution.

I'd underlined it twice back then. I hadn't known why. Some part of me, apparently, had been keeping receipts long before the rest of me admitted it might need to.

I worked through the night. Bank transfers from my own account to Shadowridge's treasury, dated and itemized — the roof, the healer's wing, the winter Kaysen couldn't make payroll for the border patrol. Treaties bearing my signature beside his, because he'd never once negotiated a clause himself. Healer contracts I'd built from nothing, three packs deep, all of them addressed to me by name before they ever mentioned him.

I wrote the petition in the same clean hand I used for medical charts. No adjectives. No grievance. Just fact after fact, stacked like stones until the weight of them could hold up a wall.

By the time I sealed it for the Ironveil courier, the cold from the dead mark had spread down through my collarbone into my sternum, waves of it, arriving and receding like something breathing beside me. My wolf didn't curl up and go quiet the way she had for seven years. She paced. I could feel her pacing, back and forth behind my ribs, alert in a way I didn't have a name for yet.

*Something's coming,* she seemed to say, if a silence could say anything at all.

The warriors arrived a little after noon.

I heard them before I saw them — boots on gravel, deliberately loud, the kind of loud that's meant to announce dominance instead of arrival. Two of the Gamma's men, faces I recognized from patrol rotations I used to schedule. I opened the door before they knocked.

"Nova." The taller one said my name like it cost him something to leave off any title. "Alpha Mason wants the treaty documents. Pack property. You're not authorized to remove it from Shadowridge grounds."

"I have a formal petition open with the Lycan Council," I said. I kept my voice at the volume I'd use to explain a dosage. "Article 9, subsection two. Any material submitted as evidence in an active partition claim is protected from seizure by either party until arbitration concludes. You can read it yourself. I have a copy."

He didn't ask for the copy. His jaw worked instead, the way jaws do when a man realizes the ground he was standing on was never his to begin with.

"Kaysen said—"

"I heard what Kaysen said." I didn't raise my voice. I didn't need to. "You can tell him the documents stay with me until the Council says otherwise. Tell him it's the law he built his pack under. I didn't write it. I just remembered it."

They left. No further threats, no Alpha tone pressed through a proxy — Kaysen hadn't given them that authority, or hadn't thought to. My wolf rumbled low and satisfied, a sound with no pitch, just pressure, settling somewhere under my sternum like a stone finding the bottom of a well.

It was near dusk when Briar came.

She was one of mine — one of the omegas I'd trained to read fever charts and stitch wounds without flinching — and she came the back way, through the trees, like she wasn't sure she was allowed to be seen doing it.

"They had the installation feast," she said, breathless, not meeting my eyes at first. "Savannah wore your furs. The grey ones. All night."

I said nothing. I pressed my thumb into my wrist and waited.

"She gave a speech. About healing the pack's wounds." Briar's mouth twisted, something between disgust and disbelief. "She stood right in front of Poppy and Wren and little Asa — the ones you delivered, Nova, the ones you sat up with for three nights when the fever wouldn't break — and she didn't know their names. She called Asa 'the boy.' In front of everyone."

"And Marcus?" I asked. Shadowridge's Gamma didn't miss things. He never had.

"He didn't say anything." Briar hesitated. "But he was watching. The whole time. Like he was counting something."

I thought of Marcus's face the last time I'd briefed him on border patrol schedules — steady, unimpressed by theater, a man who trusted numbers over speeches.

"Thank you for telling me," I said, and meant it.

After she slipped back into the dark, I sat a long time with the cold still moving through my collarbone, and thought about a Gamma quietly counting the distance between what a Luna performs and what a Luna actually is.
