When My Dead Mate Returned for My Daughter Novel Cover

When My Dead Mate Returned for My Daughter

At 8:03 PM, the bond shattered as Gideon's scent—jasmine and musk—struck her like a blade, still fresh from another's touch. Six months pregnant, she watched her dead mate ascend the ceremonial platform, his eyes empty when they found her. The pup kicked, sensing wrongness, while the pack awaited the Alpha's blessing. The incomplete bond burned, and his contempt cut deeper than any rejection, leaving her to face a mate who returned without love.

Chapter 2

The laundry room smelled like lye and damp wool. I stood at the long wooden table, folding sheets with mechanical precision while two younger she-wolves gossiped near the door. They thought I couldn't hear them. Or maybe they just didn't care.

"Poor thing," one of them whispered. "Lost the pup and the mate in the same month."

"She never had him to begin with," the other replied. "Everyone knew he preferred Harley."

I kept folding. Kept my face blank. Kept my breathing even.

This was my life now. Laundry rotations on Mondays and Thursdays. Kitchen prep Tuesday mornings. Supply inventory every other Friday. Visible enough that Loretta could point to me and say she hadn't thrown out her dead son's widow. Invisible enough that no one watched too closely.

I finished the last sheet and carried the basket toward the storage closet. My arms ached. Everything ached. Suppressing the wolf each morning left me hollowed out in ways I couldn't explain—like trying to hold back a flood with my bare hands while pretending the water didn't exist.

The silver-white wolf wanted out. Wanted to run. Wanted to hunt.

I gave her three hours a night in the clearings Atlas marked for me. It wasn't enough. It would never be enough. But it was all I could risk.

I set the basket down and pulled out the folded map Atlas had left beneath a loose stone near the eastern border two nights ago. New patrol routes. Shift changes. A notation in his precise handwriting: *Beta takes the north ridge alone on Wednesdays. Blind spot between 2-4am.*

I memorized it. Burned it in the kitchen fire an hour later.

This was how we worked. No direct contact during daylight. No traceable meetings. Just information passed like breadcrumbs through a forest I was learning to navigate in the dark.

The supply run came on a cold Thursday. I loaded crates into the cart with Maren's help, her hands still shaking slightly whenever she looked at me. She hadn't spoken about what she saw in the healer ward. Hadn't told anyone. But the fear in her eyes said she understood exactly what would happen if Loretta found out.

"East border storage," she said quietly. "Be back before dark."

I nodded and took the cart.

The eastern border storage sat at the edge of Ironveil territory, a squat stone building that smelled like dust and old leather. I unloaded half the crates before I realized I wasn't alone.

Caden Voss stood near the doorway, silent as a shadow.

I'd seen him at the ceremony. Seen him stand there with the others, watching Gideon reject me, watching him strike me, watching me bleed. He hadn't moved. Hadn't spoken. Hadn't done a single thing.

Now he stepped forward and lifted one of the heavier crates without asking. Carried it inside. Set it down carefully.

I stared at him.

He wouldn't meet my eyes. Just turned and walked back to the cart, picked up another crate, brought it in. We worked in silence. When the last box was stacked, he dusted off his hands and left without a word.

I stood there for a long moment, watching his back disappear into the trees.

That evening, I found the note tucked into the supply manifest. The handwriting was rough, unpracticed: *I should have moved. I'm sorry.*

I read it once. Folded it precisely along the creases. Placed it in the locked box beneath my cot where I kept the financial records I'd been copying from Loretta's study, the patrol schedules Atlas fed me, the list of every wolf who had looked away.

I didn't respond. Not yet. But I filed his name under a different category in my mind. Not ally. Not enemy. Something in between. Something I might be able to use.

The news came three days later.

Gideon was dead. Killed in a rogue ambush at Blackwater Gorge. They found blood. Torn clothing. Claw marks on the rocks. His Beta brought back what was left—a shredded jacket that still carried his scent, faint and wrong.

The bond went cold.

Not the sharp, tearing agony of a true mate's death. Not the clean break I'd felt when he rejected me. This was different. Hollow. Muffled. Like a door closing in a distant room I could no longer reach.

I stood in the pack house common area and felt absolutely nothing.

Then I made myself feel everything.

I let my knees buckle. Let the sound tear out of my throat—raw and broken and exactly what they expected. Let myself collapse against the nearest wall while pack members rushed forward with their useless comfort and their practiced sympathy.

Loretta appeared in the doorway. Watched me with those calculating eyes.

I looked up at her through tears I'd forced to the surface. Let my voice shake. "He's gone."

"Yes," she said softly. "He is."

She believed me. I could see it in the way her posture relaxed, the way her gaze moved past me toward the window. She thought I was broken. Manageable. A widow too shattered to be a threat.

I buried my face in my hands and let my shoulders shake.

Inside, where no one could see, my wolf opened one silver eye.

Gideon wasn't dead. The bond would have shattered completely if he were. This was something else. Something staged.

He'd run.

I filed that information away with everything else. Kept crying. Kept playing the part.

That night, I met Atlas in the clearing he'd marked on the map. He was waiting when I arrived, leaning against a tree with his arms crossed.

"You felt it," he said. Not a question.

I shifted into my wolf form. Let the silver-white fur ripple across my skin. Let the power stretch and settle.

"He's alive," I said through the bond that connected human speech to wolf form. "He faked it."

Atlas's mouth curved slightly. "Good. Let him run. Let him think he's safe."

I tilted my head. "Why?"

"Because when he comes back," Atlas said quietly, "we'll be ready."

I held his gaze. Felt something shift between us—not the forced, painful bond I'd had with Gideon, but something else. Something that smelled like pine and cold water and a future I couldn't quite see yet.

"How long?" I asked.

He smiled. "As long as it takes."

I shifted back to human form. Stood there in the moonlight, naked and unashamed, while Atlas's eyes stayed carefully on my face.

"Then we wait," I said.

He nodded once. "We wait."

I walked back to the pack house alone. Climbed into my narrow cot. Pulled the thin blanket over my shoulders.

Somewhere in Europe, Gideon was breathing. Sleeping. Thinking he'd escaped.

I closed my eyes and smiled in the dark.

Let him run.
