Chapter 3

Three weeks in rogue territory taught me things the pack house never had.

How to sleep with one eye cracked open. How to scent the air manually before making camp because my wolf was a flat line inside me, no warning, no instinct, nothing. How to wrap burned wrists in torn cloth and keep moving when the silver itch crawled under my skin like something alive.

I avoided pack borders. Stayed in the shallow cover of forest undergrowth where the scent markers thinned out and the land belonged to no one. I foraged—roots, wild berries, anything I recognized from the survival rotations Ironcliff used to run before I got moved to the Omega quarters. One night I shared a fire with a wandering Omega who didn't ask questions. He handed me half a rabbit and looked at my neck—at the cold scar where the mark used to be—and said nothing. I was grateful for that.

By the time I reached Silverveil's outer border, I was gaunt. Exhausted. Carrying nothing except two years of Ironcliff intelligence and the knowledge that I had exactly one card to play.

The border checkpoint was a stone hut and two guards. The older one stepped forward when I approached. His nostrils flared. I watched his face shift—confusion first, then something closer to pity.

No pack markings. No rank scent. Wolfless.

I met his eyes. "I need entry into the alliance program for dispossessed wolves."

He hesitated. "You'll need to state your business."

"I have information your Alpha will want," I said. Flat. No elaboration.

He looked at me for three long seconds. Then he stepped aside.

The alliance quarters were underground, same as Ironcliff's Omega corridor, but cleaner. Less damp. My bunk was narrow and the mattress was thin but it didn't smell like mildew. I set my single bag on the floor and didn't unpack it.

They brought me to the Healer the next morning.

Seraphine was older than I'd expected—grey streaking her dark hair, hands steady and unsentimental. She gestured to the chair and I sat. She unwrapped my wrists without asking permission.

The burns had started to heal but the pattern was still visible. Silver cuffs leave a signature—neat, deliberate, the kind made by restraint rather than accident. Seraphine's expression didn't change. She worked in silence, applying a salve that smelled like cedar and something sharper. Then she pulled out a vial.

"Wolfsbane purge," she said. "It'll clear your system. Two years of suppressants—it's going to take months before your wolf responds. Maybe longer."

I nodded.

She administered the compound. It burned going in, a thin line of fire down my throat. I didn't flinch.

"Keep your wrists covered," she said. Not a command. A suggestion. "People ask questions."

"I know."

She looked at me then—really looked, the way Healers do when they're reading more than just injuries. "You'll be all right," she said quietly.

I thanked her. I kept my wrists covered from that day forward.

Not because I was ashamed. Because the scars were mine, and I wasn't interested in anyone's pity unless I'd invited it first.

The training yard was where I saw him.

I'd been assigned to the morning rotation—basic drills, nothing advanced, the kind of work they gave wolfless she-wolves to keep them busy. I was halfway through the sequence when the air in the yard shifted.

Every wolf turned. Not obviously—just a slight, involuntary angle of the head, the specific way pack wolves orient toward power they can't ignore.

I followed their line of sight.

He was standing at the far edge of the yard. Tall. Dark-haired. Dressed like he didn't need ceremony to announce what he was. Lycan royalty. I knew it before anyone told me. The aura was unmistakable—not aggressive, not a threat, just *present* in a way that made the air feel heavier.

I watched him for three seconds. Then I made my decision.

I walked across the yard. Wolves stepped aside without thinking about it. He saw me coming and didn't move.

I stopped three feet from him. Close enough to be heard without raising my voice.

"I have information on Ironcliff Pack's border corruption," I said. "Smuggling routes. Unregistered rogue alliances. Falsified patrol reports. Documented chain of command. I'll provide it in full in exchange for formal Silverveil protection status and unrestricted access to advanced combat and wolf-development training."

His expression didn't change. He looked at me the way someone looks at a contract they're considering.

"Why Silverveil specifically?" he asked.

His voice was quiet. Measured. The kind of voice that didn't need volume to be heard.

"Because the Lycan Prince is here," I said, "and what I'm carrying is worth more than a pack Alpha can sanction."

Silence. The yard had gone still around us. Every wolf within earshot was pretending not to listen.

He studied me. Not my scars—my eyes.

"Accepted," he said.

I nodded once. "When do we start?"

"Tomorrow. Training yard. Dawn."

I turned to leave. His voice stopped me.

"Your name."

I looked back. "Aurelia."

He didn't offer his. He didn't need to. I already knew who he was.

I walked back across the yard and no one met my eyes. My wolf was still silent. My wrists itched under the cloth. The rejection scar on my neck pulsed cold.

But I had a deal.

And for the first time in three weeks, I had something that felt like ground under my feet.
