When My Alpha Publicly Begged After Betraying Me

At 6:47 PM, the bond snapped—a wet crack only she heard, deep in her throat. Three claw lines tore through the mate mark Chase Maddox placed five years ago, and she collapsed, blood soaking her healer's tunic. He stood ten feet away, moments after brushing her shoulder, moving toward the rogue enclave. Now, broken and bleeding, she must face his betrayal and the war that awaits.

Chapter 4

Three weeks at the Crescent Throne, and I had learned the shape of my own days.

I woke before dawn. I drank tea I brewed myself, in a small copper pot Julian had left on my counter the second morning without comment. I walked to the medical wing through corridors that smelled of cedar and old stone, and I worked until my hands ached from precision rather than from mending other people's mistakes.

The filing system was mine now. Injury type, then severity, then date. I had rewritten the intake protocols, drafted a new surgical checklist, and pinned a hand-drawn diagram of the silver-neutralizing compress ratios to the wall above the prep table. Julian had stopped by three days ago, read the diagram in silence, and then quietly copied it into his own notebook.

That was a kind of praise I understood.

This morning I was teaching. Four court medics stood around the demonstration table while I walked them through a bond-wound closure — the specific stitching pattern that respected the sigil's grain instead of cutting across it. Two of them were older than me by a decade. None of them interrupted.

'The mark isn't just skin,' I said, tilting the practice cadaver's shoulder toward the lamp. 'It's a channel. If you close it like ordinary tissue, you seal in whatever's already leaking. You have to leave the sigil's caudal edge open until the bond stabilizes. Then you close in reverse.'

One of the older medics — a woman named Corah — leaned closer. 'How did you learn this?'

I paused. My fingers rested on the false skin.

'The hard way,' I said.

She didn't ask again.

Alden passed the doorway at nine, the way he always did. He didn't come in. He never came in unless I looked up first. He stood in the corridor with his hands clasped behind his back and watched for perhaps four seconds — long enough to note that I was upright, that the wing was quiet, that my medics were listening. Then he moved on.

I had started to expect him. I had started to feel the small pull of disappointment on the two mornings he'd been detained by court business and hadn't come at all. I hadn't decided yet what to do with that information. I filed it, the way I filed everything, in the part of my brain that never fully slept.

My scar itched sometimes. Less often now. When I touched it, my fingers came away without blood, without heat, without the cold static that had lived under my skin for the first ten days here. My wolf, small and quiet, had begun to stretch inside me. Not to run. Just to breathe.

It was the first time in five years I had gone to bed tired from my own choices.

Julian brought me the news at midday. He didn't knock — we'd passed that point a week ago — but he stopped in the doorway with an expression that made me set down my pen before he spoke.

'He's at the gate,' Julian said.

I didn't need to ask which he.

'When.'

'This morning. Just after dawn. Delta Kerrin turned him away — no invitation, no diplomatic standing. He invoked Alpha rank.' Julian's mouth tilted, almost dry. 'Kerrin informed him that Alpha rank is not a diplomatic credential at this court.'

I sat with that for a moment. The bond, which had been slammed shut on my end for days, gave one small tug — not a message, just a location marker. He was close. Close enough that the cracked mark on my throat had picked up his direction and filed it, uninvited.

'And now?' I asked.

'He hasn't left. He's camped at the outer perimeter. Alden's Beta says he's been sitting in the cold for six hours.'

I picked my pen back up. The nib was still wet. I capped it carefully.

'Thank you, Julian.'

He watched me for another beat. Not testing. Just seeing whether I needed him to stay. When I returned to my notes, he nodded once and left.

I did not go to a window. I did not reach toward the bond. I did not do him the courtesy of thinking about him for longer than the seconds it took to close the pen.

But my hands, when I picked up the next case file, had a fine tremor in them for exactly one page. Then it stopped.

The banquet had been on the calendar for a month.

A formal pack gathering — every territorial Alpha within three days' travel invited to the Crescent Throne to renew fealty and discuss the rogue enclaves along the northern border. Duskvale would be there. Silverpine. Ironveil had not been invited; a courtesy notice had gone out explaining the omission in language too polite to be anything but a slap.

I had a formal dress laid out in my quarters. Deep gray, high collar cut just low enough to show the scar without displaying it. My Lead Healer insignia pinned at the throat, silver against the fabric.

Alden stopped at my door that afternoon. He did come in, this time, because I looked up first.

'You don't have to attend,' he said. 'The medical wing is a legitimate excuse.'

'I'm attending,' I said.

His wolf shifted behind his eyes — a flicker of something that was not surprise, exactly, but recognition. He inclined his head.

'Then I'll see you there.'

He left. I stood in front of the dress for a long time.

Somewhere beyond the outer wall, a man who used to be my mate was sitting in the cold, waiting for a door to open.

I would not be the one to open it.

But I would be in the room when he found his own way through.
