When My Alpha Publicly Begged After Betraying Me Novel Cover

When My Alpha Publicly Begged After Betraying Me

At 6:47 PM, the bond snapped—a wet crack only she heard, deep in her throat. Three claw lines tore through the mate mark Chase Maddox placed five years ago, and she collapsed, blood soaking her healer's tunic. He stood ten feet away, moments after brushing her shoulder, moving toward the rogue enclave. Now, broken and bleeding, she must face his betrayal and the war that awaits.

Chapter 2

The Crescent Throne smelled like cedar and cold stone and something older underneath — a mineral sharpness I couldn't name yet. I catalogued it the way I catalogued everything: automatically, clinically, storing it in the part of my brain that never fully slept.

Alden met me at the side entrance of the medical wing. Not the grand court gates. Not the ceremonial hall. A side door, lit by two wall sconces, with no guards in sight except the one who melted back into shadow the moment we arrived. He'd thought about that. The absence of spectacle was itself a message.

He looked at my bandaged neck and said nothing about it. That was also a message.

'You made it,' he said. Simple. No relief performed for my benefit, no manufactured warmth. Just a fact acknowledged.

'I made it,' I said.

He turned and walked. I followed.

The medical wing was larger than anything Ironveil had ever given me. Three connected rooms, stone walls, tall windows that let in gray morning light. Shelves already stocked — not fully, not presumptively, but with the core materials a healer would need on day one. Someone had thought about that too. Alden stopped at a table near the window and picked up a single document. He held it out without preamble.

I read it. Lead Healer of the Crescent Throne. Effective immediately. Sponsored under the personal authority of Prince Alden Voss.

My hands were steadier than they had any right to be.

'The staff report to you,' he said. 'Seven medics, two apprentices. Supply requisitions go through Julian Vance — he's been acting Lead and he'll brief you on current cases. The ward is yours to organize as you see fit.' He paused. His hands were clasped behind his back. I noticed that. The deliberate physical space he left between us. 'This position is yours because you earned it. Nothing else is expected of you.'

I looked up from the document.

His expression was even. No expectation written in it anywhere. His wolf — I couldn't see it, but I could feel the weight of it, the way you feel a large body of water nearby without seeing it — was very still.

'Thank you,' I said.

It was not enough for what he'd done. We both knew it. Neither of us said so.

He nodded once and left me to my new ward.

I stood alone in it for exactly one minute. Then I started learning where everything was.

Four days later, Julian Vance brought me the case three senior court medics had declined.

He laid the imaging scans on the table without comment — a Lycan warrior, mid-thirties, silver fragment lodged four millimeters from the spinal cord, shifting with every breath. The previous surgical attempts had been halted before the first incision. Too close to the cord. Too much silver contamination in the surrounding tissue. Too much risk.

I studied the scans for a long time. Julian stood across the table, watching my face the way medics watch each other — not waiting for confidence, just waiting for honesty.

'It's possible,' I said. 'The fragment is moving on a predictable axis. If we go in during the exhale cycle and use a silver-neutralizing compress on the approach vector—'

'The senior medics said the compress wouldn't hold at that depth.'

'They were using the standard concentration.' I pulled the scan closer. 'I've been modifying the ratio for two years. It holds.'

He was quiet for a moment. Then: 'All right. When do you want to start?'

The surgery took four hours. Julian's hands were good — precise, no wasted motion, no questions at the wrong moments. The fragment came free on the third exhale cycle, clean as a pulled thorn. The warrior's vitals steadied before we closed.

When it was done, the medical wing was so quiet I could hear the candles.

Julian set down his instruments and looked at me across the table. There was something in his expression I hadn't seen aimed at me in a long time. Not gratitude. Professional respect. The kind that doesn't need to be said out loud but says itself anyway.

'I'll write up the compress modification,' I said. 'For the records.'

'Yes,' he said. 'You should.'

I heard later that Alden had received Julian's report and gone briefly into his private study before returning to his afternoon duties. I didn't hear what he did in there. I didn't ask.

Back in Ironveil, I knew — through the bond's faint, static hum, the way you know a storm by the pressure in your ears — that something was wrong in the space I'd left behind. Not grief. Not guilt. A restlessness. A pacing. Chase's wolf, unable to settle against a silence it didn't understand.

I pressed two fingers against the bandage at my throat and felt the pull of the cracked mark underneath, faint as a bad tooth.

I turned back to my new shelves and began organizing them the way I wanted them.

That was enough for today.
