Chapter 2

The morning after John's public rejection, I woke to sunlight streaming through curtains I had chosen decades ago. My body ached from the broken mate bond, but something else burned within me—something I hadn't felt in fifty years.

Defiance.

"I won't be moved to the Omega quarters," I announced to the empty room, my voice stronger than it had been in decades. "Not today. Not ever."

I sat up slowly, feeling the weight of my decision settle around me like armor. The pack would expect me to fade quietly into the background, to accept my demotion with grace and dignity. They would expect the obedient Luna to continue serving even after being discarded.

They would be disappointed.

I reached for the pack mind-link—that invisible thread that connected every member of the Silver Moon Pack—and with deliberate focus, I severed it. The sudden silence in my head was deafening but liberating.

"Luna Sylvie?" A young Delta wolf knocked tentatively on my door. "Alpha John requests the patrol schedules for your review."

"No," I replied simply.

She blinked, clearly not understanding. "I'm sorry?"

"The patrol schedules, the healer rotations, the meal preparations—none of it will be reviewed or approved today." I rose from the bed, my back straighter than it had been in years. "Or tomorrow. Or the day after that."

By mid-morning, chaos reigned through the Alpha estate. Without my coordination, warriors stood idle, healers argued over patient assignments, and the kitchen staff wandered aimlessly without direction. Fifty years of seamless organization collapsed in a single day.

"Mother, this is childish," Brody hissed when he found me packing my belongings. "You're disrupting pack operations!"

I didn't look up from folding my clothes. "Then perhaps you should learn to run them yourself."

His face flushed with anger. "You're being bitter and selfish. Father has found his true mate—"

"And I have found my spine," I interrupted, meeting his gaze steadily. "Something you seem to have misplaced."

---

"Luna Sylvie, please reconsider," Beta Marcus pleaded as Danielle helped me carry my bags to her car. "The Alpha hasn't officially revoked your pack status. You don't need to leave."

"I'm not leaving," I replied calmly. "I'm relocating temporarily while I consider my options."

Danielle shot him a warning look. "And I'm escorting her, as is my right as Future Luna."

The drive to the border territory was silent, each mile putting distance between me and the life I had built. As we crossed into Crescent Valley Pack lands, I felt something stir within me—a faint, unfamiliar spark that had nothing to do with the broken bond.

"What is this feeling?" I whispered, my hand instinctively moving to my chest.

Danielle smiled gently. "That's your wolf, Luna Sylvie. She's been suppressed for so long, but she's still there."

The safe house was a modest cabin nestled among ancient pines. As I stepped across the threshold, that spark inside me grew stronger, pushing through the grief like a green shoot through winter soil.

"Welcome to freedom," Danielle said softly.

For the first time in fifty years, I took a breath that didn't taste of duty or sacrifice.

---

The calm lasted exactly three hours.

The door burst open with such force that it splintered against the wall. John stood in the doorway, his Alpha aura radiating outward in suffocating waves. His eyes blazed with fury, his silver-streaked hair wild around his face.

"What do you think you're doing?" he roared, his Alpha voice making the windows rattle.

I rose slowly from my chair, refusing to flinch. "I'm taking a vacation."

"A vacation?" He advanced into the room, his aura pressing down on me like a physical weight. "You're causing chaos! The pack is falling apart without you!"

"That's not my problem anymore," I replied, fighting to keep my voice steady as his aura squeezed around me.

"You are MY Luna!" John snarled, closing the distance between us. His Alpha aura intensified, filling the room with suffocating pressure. "You will return to your duties immediately!"

I felt my knees weaken, my body conditioned after decades to submit to his dominance. But something else rose within me—that spark I had felt earlier, now burning brighter.

"No," I said simply.

John's eyes widened in shock. In fifty years, I had never directly defied him.

"You forget yourself," he growled, unleashing the full force of his Alpha power. The air around us seemed to thicken, pressing me down with invisible hands.

I staggered but remained standing.

"You will kneel," he commanded, his Alpha tone vibrating through my bones.

And for the first time in our fifty-year bond, I felt my wolf rise up to challenge him.
