Chapter 5

Hands pulled me from the water. Strong hands, efficient, belonging to wolves whose names I didn't know and didn't care to learn. They dragged me onto the shore, my dress heavy and dripping, my body shaking so violently I couldn't control it.

Someone wrapped a blanket around my shoulders. It did nothing. The cold had settled into my bones, deep and permanent.

I looked up.

The gathered Alphas and Lunas stood in a loose semicircle around me, their faces illuminated by torchlight. Some looked concerned. Some looked uncomfortable. Most looked like they were watching a spectacle they hadn't paid for but would remember anyway.

Giselle stood near the front, her hand still pressed to her mouth, her eyes glistening with tears. She looked devastated. Horrified. Innocent.

And Tristan—Tristan stood beside her, his jaw tight, his eyes fixed on me with an expression I couldn't read. Anger, maybe. Embarrassment. Something colder.

He stepped forward.

"Alina." His voice was low. Controlled. The voice of an Alpha addressing a problem that needed managing. "What were you thinking?"

I stared at him. Water dripped from my hair, pooling at my feet.

"I—" My voice came out broken. I tried again. "She pushed me."

Giselle's breath hitched. A small, wounded sound.

"That's not true," she whispered. "I would never—Tristan, I swear, I didn't—"

Her voice broke beautifully.

Tristan's expression hardened. He looked at me like I was a stranger. Like I was the problem.

"You've caused a scene," he said flatly. "At an allied event. In front of visiting dignitaries."

I opened my mouth. Closed it.

The cold was everywhere. My lungs ached. My wolf was silent, too weak to even whimper.

"This reflects poorly on Silverfang," Tristan continued. His tone was measured. Reasonable. The tone of a man explaining something obvious to someone who should have known better. "On our alliances. On our reputation."

He paused.

"You will apologize."

The words landed like stones.

I blinked. "What?"

"You will apologize to Giselle," he said. "For the disruption. For the accusation. You will do it now, in front of everyone, so there is no question about where Silverfang stands."

Silence.

The gathered wolves watched. Waiting.

I looked at Giselle. She stood with her shoulders slightly hunched, her expression fragile, her hands clasped in front of her like she was holding herself together.

She met my eyes.

And for half a second—just half a second—something flickered across her face. Something sharp. Satisfied.

Then it was gone.

"Tristan," I said quietly. "She pushed me."

"Enough." His voice cut through the air like a blade. "You will kneel. You will apologize. And you will stop making this worse."

I stared at him.

He stared back.

There was no warmth in his eyes. No hesitation. No flicker of doubt.

He meant it.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist. The pressure was sharp. Clean.

And then I moved.

Slowly, carefully, I lowered myself to my knees on the wet stone shore. My dress clung to my legs, heavy and cold. My hands rested on my thighs. My head stayed up.

I looked at Giselle.

"I apologize," I said.

My voice did not shake. It was flat. Empty. The voice of someone reading lines from a script they hadn't written.

"I apologize for disrupting the banquet. For causing a scene. For any harm my words may have caused."

Giselle's eyes filled with tears. She nodded, her lower lip trembling.

"Thank you," she whispered. "I—I forgive you, Alina. I know you've been under so much stress."

Her voice was soft. Gracious.

I stayed on my knees.

The gathered Alphas shifted. A few exchanged glances. The eastern Alpha's Luna looked away, her expression tight.

No one spoke.

Tristan stepped forward and offered me his hand.

I looked at it.

Then I stood on my own.

The blanket slipped from my shoulders. I didn't pick it up.

I turned and walked back toward the estate, my wet dress trailing behind me, my body shaking with cold I could no longer feel.

Behind me, the gathered wolves resumed their conversations. Low voices. Murmured speculation. The kind of talk that would follow me for weeks.

I didn't care.

Inside me, something broke.

Not loudly. Not dramatically.

It was quiet. Final.

The last stubborn thread of the mate bond—the part that had been holding on, hoping, waiting for him to see me, to choose me, to prove that the Moon Goddess hadn't made a mistake—went dark.

Completely dark.

My wolf didn't howl. She didn't rage.

She just… stopped.

I walked through the estate's grand hall, past the remaining guests, past the Omegas clearing dishes, past the warmth and light and laughter.

I walked until I reached the car.

Rolf was waiting, his expression unreadable. He opened the door without a word.

I climbed in.

And I sat in silence, staring out the window at nothing, while my body shook and my mind went cold and clear.

Three days.

That was all I needed.

Three days, and I would be gone.

The next morning, I woke before dawn. My body still ached from the cold, but I ignored it. I dressed in simple clothes—jeans, a sweater, boots. No Luna attire. No jewelry.

I went to my office.

The diplomatic correspondence was waiting. Three pending queries from allied Alphas, two trade agreements that needed final review, one territorial access request that required Silverfang's formal approval.

I answered them all.

I wrote with the same precision I always used, the same careful language that had built Silverfang's reputation for three years. I signed each letter with my title. I sealed each envelope.

I left them in a neat stack on Tristan's desk.

Then I opened the bottom drawer of my own desk and removed the rejection letter I had drafted days ago.

I read it one last time.

*I, Alina Crownveil, Luna of the Silverfang Pack, reject you, Tristan of Silverfang, as my mate.*

The words were precise. Legally binding. Final.

I signed it.

I placed it in an envelope and set it on Tristan's desk beside the correspondence. Next to it, I placed my Luna crest—the silver pendant I had worn for three years.

I stood there for a moment, looking at them.

Then I turned and walked out.

I took nothing with me. No photographs. No keepsakes. No thread of my years as Luna.

I had already sent everything that mattered ahead through the decoy shipments. The rest—the clothes, the books, the small personal items—belonged to a version of myself I was leaving behind.

I walked through the packhouse one last time. The halls were quiet. Most of the pack was still asleep.

I stepped outside.

The air was cold and sharp. The sky was still dark, but the horizon was beginning to lighten.

A car waited at the edge of the territory. Unmarked. Unremarkable.

I walked toward it.

The driver was a Crownveil loyalist—a wolf I didn't recognize, but whose scent carried the unmistakable signature of my grandfather's guard.

He opened the door without a word.

I climbed in.

And as the car pulled away, I looked back once.

The packhouse stood silent against the dawn, its windows dark, its walls solid and permanent.

I felt nothing.

No grief. No regret. No anger.

Just the cold, clean certainty that I would never return.

The bond snapped somewhere between the border and sunrise.

I felt it go—a sharp, searing pain that ripped through my chest and left me gasping. The driver glanced at me in the rearview mirror, his expression carefully neutral.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist and breathed through it.

And then it was over.

The bond was gone.

I was free.
