When My Alpha Humiliated Me, I Awakened Royal Blood Novel Cover

When My Alpha Humiliated Me, I Awakened Royal Blood

For three years, Aria read every twitch of Bradley's jaw. At 8:47, she finally understands: tonight, before two hundred wolves and visiting Alphas, her Alpha will reject her as mate and Luna. When the words fall, the mark on her neck turns cold, and the humiliation should break her. Instead, something ancient stirs beneath her skin—royal blood she never knew she carried. With Alpha Marcus Voss of Silverfang watching and a silent Lycan envoy seated at the far end, Aria stands at the edge of ruin. A rejection meant to destroy her may be the very thing that wakes the power strong enough to answer it.

Chapter 5

The great hall had been reconfigured for diplomacy. I saw it the moment I stepped through the servants' entrance carrying the wine tray — the long banquet tables broken into three clusters oriented toward the head table, the Silverfang delegation seated at the western arc, the Lycan envoy's small table set apart at the northern wall with the deliberate distance protocol required for royal blood. I had drawn this seating chart myself, four months ago, for a different alliance dinner that never happened. Bradley had used it anyway.

Skyler was in the Luna's chair.

She was wearing my formal regalia — the deep gray silk with the silver shoulder cording, the pendant lying wrong against her collarbone, the clasp still facing out. Someone should have told her by now. No one had. She sat straight-backed and pleased, one hand resting on the arm of the chair the way a woman rests her hand on something she has decided is hers.

I moved down the servant line. Poured. Set. Stepped. Poured. Set. Stepped.

At the northern wall, the Lycan envoy was already seated.

I had not looked at him yet. I had felt him the moment I entered — the specific density in the air that a very powerful wolf displaces when he is being still on purpose. Cedar. Thunderstorm. The scent landed somewhere behind my sternum and stayed there, quiet, waiting. I filed it. I did not turn my head.

He was watching me.

I knew because the room's attention has a weight, and his was the only weight in the hall that had adjusted itself to track a servant. I felt it move with me down the line — patient, unhurried, the attention of a man who had entered the room early to read it and had found something in the reading that would not resolve.

I positioned myself at the third pillar. It was the point in the hall where the sight lines from the head table, the Silverfang arc, and the envoy's table intersected. From here I could see every face and every hand. I had chosen it two years ago, the first time I stood in this hall in Luna's silk, and my body had walked to it tonight without asking my permission.

Bradley stood to speak.

He straightened his cuffs first. Left, then right. The tell.

"Friends," he began. "Allies. Tonight Ironvale stands at the beginning of a new chapter — one built on the same strength that has carried us through every season and every border."

I recognized the sentence. I had written it in March, for a harvest address that had been postponed. He was reading it verbatim, with the small warm inflection he used when he wanted the room to feel included. Across the hall, Marcus Voss of Silverfang made a small polite sound in his throat and did not smile. His eyes were on Bradley's senior warriors at the second table. Two of them were looking at their plates. One was looking at the door.

Elias Ford was not in the hall. I noted it and set it down.

Bradley kept talking. Strength. Continuity. The seamless transition of Luna authority. Skyler, at the head table, adjusted the fall of her sleeve in a way that suggested she had been waiting for the sentence and did not want to look like she had.

At the northern wall, the Lycan envoy did not eat. He did not drink. He had not touched the goblet in front of him. His hands rested one over the other on the table, and his eyes — I let myself look, once, quickly — his eyes were on me.

Dark. Level. Assessing. Not the way a man looks at a woman. The way a man looks at a discrepancy in a report.

I dropped my gaze back to the wine.

He had scented something. I did not know what. I had spent three years suppressing the little I had — the flat, unremarkable trace the pack read as wolfless — and tonight the suppression was still in place. But something in me had been moving since the banquet. Something had turned over in its sleep. And a Lycan Prince trained in scent identification had, apparently, caught the edge of it.

I filed him. I did not look again.

"—and it is in that spirit," Bradley was saying, "that I wish to honor tonight the gracious transition our pack has undertaken. A transition that reflects Ironvale's readiness to meet the future with the leadership it deserves."

He paused. Let the room settle into the shape of the pause.

"Aria."

My name in his mouth for the first time in four days.

"Come forward."

I set the wine tray down on the servant's sideboard. I did not hurry. I did not hesitate. I walked between the tables the way I had walked through the pack house every day for three years — measured, invisible, a shadow the room had learned not to see. Except the room was seeing me now. Every face turned. Marcus Voss's eyes narrowed a fraction. Skyler sat straighter in the Luna's chair, the pendant catching the candlelight, still wrong.

I stopped at the point Bradley indicated. Three paces from the head table. Directly beneath the chandelier.

Bradley looked down at me. His face was composed. His hand rested lightly on the back of Skyler's chair.

He drew the Alpha tone up from his chest — I felt it gather before he spoke, the pressure building against the air — and he released it.

"Aria. Thank Skyler. Publicly. For stepping into the role the pack needed. Acknowledge before our guests that this transition serves Ironvale's strength."

The tone landed.

Every wolf in the hall felt it. I saw the servants against the far wall bend their knees a fraction. I saw one of Silverfang's junior warriors lower his head before he caught himself. The pressure pushed down through my shoulders, into my spine, into the soles of my feet.

I opened my mouth.

And my body locked.
