Chapter 3

The cafeteria attack came on a Tuesday, during the lunch shift when the hall was fullest.

I was carrying a tray of clean bowls from the kitchen to the serving counter when I heard Ivy's scream — high, sharp, designed to carry. I turned. She was standing near the long table where the Deltas ate, her tunic torn across the shoulder, three precise claw marks visible against her skin. Not deep. Theatrical.

"She attacked me," Ivy gasped, pointing at me with a trembling hand. Her eyes were wide, wet, perfect. "I was just asking about the supply records and she—"

The hall erupted. Chairs scraped back. Bodies moved toward me from three directions. I set the tray down carefully on the counter and did not move.

Maverick was through the doors before anyone else reached me. His hand closed around my upper arm like a vice, fingers digging into muscle hard enough that I felt bone beneath. He yanked me around to face him. His eyes were amber at the edges, his wolf pressing close to the surface.

"Submit," he said, and the Alpha tone hit me like a fist to the chest.

My knees buckled. The compulsion was biological, absolute, a command my body could not refuse even if my mind screamed against it. My spine bent forward. My pregnant belly strained against the pull. The room tilted. I was going down — five months pregnant, surrounded by forty wolves who wanted to see me broken, and I was going down.

My free hand found the edge of the serving counter. My fingers closed around the handle of the stew pot — still hot from the stove, steam rising from the surface.

I swung it.

The scalding liquid hit Maverick square across the chest. He released my arm with a choked sound, stumbling back, his tunic soaked and steaming. The pot clattered to the floor between us.

The hall went silent.

I straightened slowly. My knees were shaking but I was standing. An Omega. Defying an Alpha's direct command. In front of witnesses.

Maverick's eyes flashed full amber. His wolf snarled inside him — I could hear it in the way his breath caught, see it in the way his shoulders rolled forward. He was going to shift. He was going to make me submit in wolf form, in front of everyone, and there would be nothing I could do to stop it.

Then he stopped.

His nostrils flared. His head tilted slightly, like he was scenting something he couldn't identify. His wolf's snarl cut off mid-sound, replaced by something that looked almost like confusion.

I knew what he was smelling. The faint, wrong edge beneath my scent — winterbloom and silver-cedar, the combination that didn't exist in nature, the scent that marked me as Miller Hudson's mate. Maverick's wolf didn't know what it was. But it knew, instinctively, that it was dangerous.

He took a step back.

"Three days additional Omega duties," he said, his voice tight. "For aggressive conduct toward the Luna."

I said nothing. I bent, picked up the fallen pot, and walked back to the kitchen. My arm throbbed where his fingers had been. Behind me, I heard Ivy's voice rising again, spinning the moment into something she could use.

I didn't look back.

That evening, alone in the basement, I stood in front of the cracked mirror above the washbasin and pulled my sleeve up. The bruise was already forming — dark purple, the clear outline of four fingers and a thumb. I turned my arm slowly, cataloging the exact shape, the depth of color. Evidence. I would not photograph it. I didn't need to. I had been documenting my own destruction for three years. I knew how to remember.

I added it to the list in my head. Maverick Ellis. Physical assault. Witness: forty-three pack members. Date: November 21.

I did not contact Miller through the bond. I didn't need to. The bond carried everything — the shock of the Alpha tone, the bruise forming on my arm, the way my body had folded under the compulsion before I broke it. He would feel it all like an echo under his own skin.

I pressed my hand flat against my belly. The pup kicked once, hard, like a question.

"Two more days," I whispered.

The next morning, Whitney Sorrel was gone.

I noticed her absence at breakfast — her usual seat at the Delta table was empty, and the two she-wolves who normally sat beside her kept glancing at the door like they expected her to arrive late. She didn't.

By midday, I'd pieced it together from overheard fragments in the hallways. Whitney had left Ironveil before dawn, headed for the Ashwood Pack's territory. A visit to her cousin, someone said. Just a few days.

I knew better.

That evening, I was in the archive room copying supply logs when I heard Ivy's voice drifting down from the common room above. She was on the phone — her tone was warm, deferential, the voice she used when she wanted something from someone with more authority than her.

"I just thought you should know," she was saying. "It's become a bit of a situation here. Maverick's handling it, of course, but—" A pause. Then, softer: "Yes. That's what we suspect. A rogue. The scent is all wrong."

I set my pen down and listened.

"I know it's unusual," Ivy continued. "But Ironveil's discipline has always been strong. Maverick won't let it compromise the alliance."

Another pause. Longer this time.

"Thank you, Alpha Greymoor. I knew you'd understand."

The call ended. I heard Ivy's footsteps cross the floor above me, then fade toward the stairwell.

I picked up my pen and added a new entry to the record I was building. Ivy Jimenez. Contact with allied Alpha. Spreading false information about pregnancy. Witness: self. Date: November 22.

The net was tightening. Not around me. Around her.

She just didn't know it yet.

That night, I lay on my cot in the dark and felt the bond hum with Miller's presence — steady, controlled, waiting. One more day. The investigation team was in position. The evidence was compiled. The allied Alphas had made their inquiries, and Maverick's ego was doing exactly what Miller had predicted it would do.

He was going to demand answers. He was going to use his Alpha authority to force me to name the father.

And when he did, Miller would walk through Ironveil's gates and every lie Ivy had built would collapse in a single moment.

I pressed my scarred palm against the cold wall and waited for the detonation I knew was coming.
