Chapter 1

At 8:14 on a Tuesday evening, I pressed my palm flat against my lower belly and knew.

The morning nausea wasn't from the flu. The sudden dizziness wasn't exhaustion. I was carrying Jonathan Bennett’s pup.

For three long years, I had lived as the secret, marked mate of Ironcrest’s Alpha. I had stayed hidden in the shadows of the pack house, enduring the whispers and the pitying glances, because Jonathan promised me patience. *“Pack politics are fragile, Maya,”* he had whispered into my neck night after night. *“Wait until the elders settle. Then I’ll announce you as my Luna.”*

I had believed every word. Feeling that tiny, quiet spark beneath my palm felt like the finish line. The bond was real. Our future was real.

I smoothed down my simple cotton dress, stepped into the hallway, and walked toward his private quarters. I rehearsed his name with every step, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Outside his heavy mahogany door, I stopped dead.

The scent hit me before anything else—a cloying, suffocating stench of gardenia perfume layered thick over Jonathan’s dark cedar. Charlotte. My half-sister.

I raised my knuckles to knock, but Jonathan’s voice cut through the wood, stopping me cold. It wasn't the soft, tender voice he used when we were in bed. It was flat, cold, and purely administrative.

“The wolfsbane dosage in her food has been increased this quarter,” Jonathan said. “Her wolf shows no sign of surfacing. Her body should be incapable of carrying to term.”

A light, mocking giggle followed. “And when do I get to move into the Luna suite?” Charlotte asked. “Her things are still in the wardrobe down the hall.”

“By the end of the month,” Jonathan replied smoothly. “Once I finalize the border treaties, the elders won't care who wears the Luna title. You'll take her place, Charlotte. I promised your mother I would handle her.”

My hand was still pressed against my stomach.

The mate mark on the curve of my neck went ice-cold, burning like dry frost. Beneath the thick, chemical numbness that had weighed down my limbs for three years, my dormant wolf gave a sudden, muffled snarl of pure agony.

My knees buckled. I caught myself against the wall, slipping silently to the carpeted runner.

I didn't scream. I didn't throw the door open and demand answers. If I cried, he would use his Alpha tone to pin me down and take whatever was left of me.

I pushed myself up on shaking legs and walked back down the empty corridor.

Inside my room, I locked the door and knelt by the bedside table. I pried up the loose floorboard under the rug. Resting in the dark hollow were three small glass spice jars, sealed with wax.

Weeks ago, my evening meals had started tasting faintly of bitter, metallic almonds. I had told myself I was being paranoid, but instinct had warned me to save scraps anyway.

Now, with steady hands, I scraped the remains of tonight’s beef stew from my plate into a fourth jar. I twisted the lid on tight, took a black marker, and wrote the date across the glass: *October 14. Wolfsbane.*

I didn’t have a full plan yet. But I had four jars of poison with Jonathan’s thumbprints all over the tray. Grief didn't break me; it turned into cold, sharp glass.

At four in the morning, before the dawn sentries changed shift, I slipped down to the basement rooms near the laundry.

My mother, Madeline, was already awake, mending work shirts under a bare yellow lightbulb. When I sat beside her on the narrow cot and whispered everything—the pregnancy, the wolfsbane, Charlotte’s laughter outside the Luna suite—her weathered face went dead still. She had the eerie, quiet calm of a woman who had survived pack cruelty for decades.

She reached out and closed her warm hands over my icy ones.

“He thinks your blood is dirty because I was born human,” Madeline whispered, her voice low and unshakable. “He thinks you have no teeth.”

“Mom,” I choked out.

“Listen to me, Maya,” she said, gripping my wrists. “Do you remember the old pack laws I made you memorize? The Luna Accord.”

I swallowed hard, looking into her dark eyes.

“An Alpha who poisons his marked mate violates sacred law,” Madeline said. “If you present physical evidence of bond tampering directly to the Lycan Council elders, their ruling triggers an irreversible aura fracture. It strips his rank on the spot. I didn’t teach you pack law just to survive, Maya. I taught you so you could bury them if they tried to destroy you. Start collecting.”

Three hours later, the knock came at my bedroom door.

Jonathan stepped inside carrying a polished wooden breakfast tray. Eggs, buttered toast, and a warm bowl of oatmeal dusted with cinnamon—the sweet spice he always used to mask the bitterness.

“Good morning, sweetheart,” he said. He smiled, his eyes softening with that practiced tenderness I now recognized as a weapon. He set the tray on my table, leaned down, and brushed my hair back from my cheek. “You look pale today. You need to rest and eat well. Let me take care of you.”

His fingers traced the line of my neck, right over the dormant mark.

I forced my lips into a gentle, grateful smile. “Thank you, Jonathan. I will.”

“Good girl.” He tapped my chin lightly. “I have border meetings all morning. Charlotte is helping me organize the council files.”

He turned and walked out, pulling the door shut behind him.

The lock clicked.

I moved immediately. I pulled a fifth jar from my drawer, uncapped it, and scooped two generous spoonfuls of the cinnamon oatmeal into the glass. I sealed the metal clamp shut, wrote the morning date across the side, and tucked it beneath the floorboard next to the others.

Outside in the gravel courtyard, Jonathan’s truck engine roared to life, and Charlotte’s high, singing laughter echoed against the brick wall beneath my window.
