Chapter 3

Sleep hadn't come at all, so at dawn Sienna pulled the grey cloak from its hook and walked the garden the way she had every morning for eight years—east hedge, fountain, the row of moonflowers she'd planted herself the first spring she'd arrived. Muscle memory, mostly. She needed her hands to have something familiar to do.

She rounded the hedge and stopped.

Pierce's grey wolf stood in the clearing, flank pressed to Lylah's tawny one, his muzzle buried deep in the fur at her throat. Not a greeting. Not a passing brush of contact that could be explained away as pack courtesy. This was bonding, slow and unhurried, the kind of intimacy wolves only offered where they felt safe enough to be unguarded.

Sovereign didn't growl this time. She went very still, which was somehow worse.

Sienna counted four seconds. Then she raised her phone and took three photographs—clear, timestamped, the pack house roofline visible in the background so no one could claim the location was ambiguous. She turned and walked back the way she'd come, her boots silent on the wet grass.

By nine, she was standing at the records office desk, reciting statute numbers to a clerk whose hands shook badly enough that he fumbled the filing cabinet twice. He'd been in the great hall three nights ago. He'd watched her bleed.

"Section forty-one, subsection C," she said again, patient as a woman reading a recipe. "Bond dissolution, contested Alpha line. Two certified copies."

He found the forms on the third try. She filled every field standing up, the same steady hand she used charting a patient's vitals. Twenty minutes. She didn't sit down once.

Grant Sallow was crossing the main corridor when she found him, and she chose that spot on purpose—six wolves within earshot, none of them looking at anything but the floor. She held out the filing, the healer's confirmation, and the photographs together, squared at the edges like a stack of index cards.

"Beta Sallow." She said his title, not his name. "I'm filing for full dissolution. I want it entered today."

His hands trembled taking the papers. He didn't ask what the photographs were. He already knew.

"I'm not requesting title," she said, loud enough to carry, "or territory, or any claim against Shadowridge's finances. I'm requesting permanent severance and sole custody of my child. That's all."

Someone near the stairwell exhaled audibly. Grant nodded once, jaw tight, and said nothing at all, which told her everything about what he already believed.

She found Pierce in his study ten minutes later, bent over ledgers that used to be hers to balance. She set the duplicate filing flat against his chest before he could stand.

He caught her wrist instead of taking the paper.

She looked down at his hand, then up at his face. "Section sixty-two," she said, voice flat as a diagnosis. "Physical interference with a dissolution claimant carries automatic escalation to full Council review, regardless of pack rank." A pause. "Let go, Pierce."

He let go. She left him holding the paper he hadn't asked for.

The ambush came the next morning, in the kitchen, which told her they'd planned it that way—no Council witnesses, no formal hall, just steam off the kettle and Marguerite's voice pitched soft as a hand on a shoulder.

"Sienna, dear." Marguerite folded her hands at her waist. "We only want to talk."

Elias didn't bother with softness. "That pup is Shadowridge bloodline. Alpha-family bloodright supersedes any personal filing you think you've made."

"A child needs a father," Marguerite added, gentler, aiming for the wound instead of the wall. "You're grieving. No one blames you for wanting to punish him. But making decisions from pain—"

Sienna let them both finish. She always let people finish; it was easier to diagnose a full sentence than a half one.

"Lycan Council Protection Law," she said, once the kitchen went quiet, "Title Nine, Section Two, clause four. A carrying mate retains unilateral right to dissolution and sole custody, independent of pack or Alpha-family authority, precedent set in Ashworth v. Ashworth twelve years ago." She met Elias's eyes. "It supersedes bloodright entirely."

Elias's jaw worked, no sound coming out.

"There's also this." She kept her tone level, clinical, a woman reading off a chart. "Pierce attempted forced re-marking two nights after I'd already filed. That's assault under royal statute. I have a witness."

Marguerite's composure went first—a crack right down the middle, visible in the way her hand rose halfway to her mouth and stopped. Elias said nothing. There was nothing left to say that wouldn't make it worse.

They left the kitchen without another word, and Sienna stood alone with the kettle still steaming, one hand resting flat against her stomach, feeling Sovereign go quiet and watchful beneath her ribs—waiting, the way she always waited, for whatever came next.
