Chapter 3

I sent the message to Nash at midnight: *Tell Ethan I'll speak to the enforcers. One condition. He returns my foster mother's Luna journals. The ones Daniella keeps in her private quarters. Non-negotiable.*

Nash's reply came twenty minutes later: *He agreed. Journals will be delivered to your location within the hour.*

I sat on the edge of the rented room's bed, my phone dark in my hand. The room was small, anonymous—a place where no pack scent lingered, no bond threaded through the walls. I'd paid cash. Used a false name. For the first time in years, I was somewhere Ethan couldn't reach through pack link or Alpha tone.

The knock came exactly fifty-three minutes later.

Nash stood in the hallway, a leather satchel in his hands. His face was carefully neutral, but I caught the flicker of something in his eyes when they met mine. Respect, maybe. Or recognition.

"Daniella wasn't happy," he said quietly, handing me the satchel.

I took it. The weight was familiar, sacred. "I don't care what Daniella is."

Nash hesitated. "Emma—"

"Tell Ethan I'll call the enforcers in the morning." I stepped back. "That's all he gets."

I closed the door before he could respond.

The journals smelled like my foster mother—lavender and old paper and something deeper, the scent memory carries when it's tied to love. I spread them across the bed with shaking hands. Three volumes, their covers worn soft from generations of Luna hands.

I opened the first one.

My foster mother's handwriting filled the pages—neat, precise, recording rituals passed down through bloodlines older than most packs could trace. The aura amplification techniques I'd been using instinctively for years were documented here in meticulous detail. The alliance invocation Ethan would soon steal was on page forty-seven of the second volume, complete with the bloodline markers that made it unmistakably, irrevocably mine.

I traced the words with my fingertips. Everything I'd reconstructed from memory was intact. Every nuance I'd feared losing was preserved.

Daniella had held these for years. She'd studied them, copied techniques she could never truly perform, used them to build a fraudulent identity as a gifted Luna candidate.

But she hadn't understood the most important thing the journals contained: these rituals weren't just instructions. They were legacy. They required not just knowledge but connection—to bloodline, to pack, to the kind of love that made you willing to pour your own strength into others without counting the cost.

Daniella had never loved anything but her own reflection.

I closed the journals and placed them carefully in my bag. Then I pulled Buster's collar from my jacket pocket and held it in both hands.

The bond with Ethan was still there—thin, frayed, barely more than a thread. But present. I could feel him through it, distant and distorted, his wolf pacing restlessly in whatever holding cell the Lycan Court had assigned him.

I had carried this bond for years. It had been the center of my identity, the axis my entire world turned on. The Moon Goddess's sacred gift. Fated. Unbreakable.

Except it wasn't unbreakable. And it had never been sacred. Not the way Ethan had treated it.

I stood in the center of the small room, Buster's collar pressed against my heart, and spoke the words I'd been carrying unspoken for weeks.

"I, Emma Salazar, reject you, Alpha Ethan Cole of the Silverfang Pack, as my mate."

The bond didn't break cleanly.

It tore.

Pain exploded through my chest—searing, bone-deep, as though something essential was being ripped out by the roots. My wolf howled, a sound of pure grief that had nothing to do with Ethan and everything to do with the violation of something the Moon Goddess herself had forged.

I dropped to my knees. My vision went white. Every nerve ending in my body was on fire.

But my voice, when I'd spoken the words, had not shaken.

I don't know how long I stayed on the floor. Minutes. Hours. Time lost meaning in the space where the bond used to be. When I finally pushed myself upright, my hands were steady.

The absence was vast. But it was clean.

I touched Buster's collar and felt nothing through the bond that had once connected me to Silverfang. No pack link. No Alpha tone waiting to pin me. No thread tying me to a man who had murdered a child I loved.

I was alone.

And I was free.

Across Silver Ridge, in the Lycan Court's enforcement wing, Ethan staggered mid-sentence.

Daniella caught his arm. "What's wrong?"

He couldn't speak. His wolf was howling—a sound of loss so total it had no language. The bond that had anchored him to Emma, that had quietly sustained every victory he'd claimed as his own, was gone.

Simply gone.

"Ethan." Daniella's voice sharpened. "What happened?"

"She rejected me." His voice came out hoarse. "Emma rejected the bond."

Daniella went very still. Then her expression shifted—not sympathy, but calculation.

"Good," she said quietly.

Ethan looked at her, his wolf still howling.

Daniella's hand tightened on his arm. "Listen to me. With Emma gone, there's nothing stopping us. I copied the invocation from the journals before I handed them over. Every word. We can perform it at the next regional Summit. As a duet. We'll claim it as proof of our bond—that we were always meant to lead together."

Ethan's wolf was still keening, a sound of confused grief he didn't want to examine.

But Daniella's words cut through the noise. A performance. A demonstration. A way to reclaim what Emma's rejection had taken.

"The continental Alphas will see it," Daniella continued, her voice soft and certain. "They'll recognize our bond as stronger than anything Emma could have given you. We'll be unstoppable."

Ethan's hands were shaking. But he nodded.

"Yes," he said. "We'll do it."

Daniella smiled and pulled him close, her fingers threading through his hair in a gesture that looked like comfort.

But her eyes, over his shoulder, were cold and bright with triumph.
