Chapter 3

I made his favorite breakfast the next morning.

Scrambled eggs, the soft kind he liked, with chives from the kitchen window box. Toast cut on the diagonal. Coffee at exactly the temperature he preferred. I set it on the table, smiled when he came down from the stairs still buttoning his cuff, and asked if he'd slept well.

He said yes. He kissed my temple. He ate every bite.

I watched him and felt nothing that resembled love. What I felt was something colder and more useful: clarity.

That was the first morning of seven. Seven mornings of breakfast. Seven afternoons in the warrior recovery bay, checking sutures and restocking comfrey, answering questions about dosages with the same steady patience I had always offered. Seven evenings of dinner and pack news and Jameson's hand at my back during the small social moments that required a united front. I performed all of it. I performed it well. I had been performing it for ten years; one more week cost me nothing I hadn't already spent.

But underneath, I was working.

The savings account had been in my name for years—a healer's stipend, modest but consistent, accumulated across a decade of service. I transferred it in three small movements across three different days, nothing large enough to flag. My mother's locket had lived in the shared jewelry drawer for so long I think Jameson had forgotten it was mine. I moved it to the inside pocket of my winter coat. My healer's instruments—the good ones, the bone-handled set I'd bought myself before I ever came to Silverfang—came out of the clinic cabinet one piece at a time over four days, each one wrapped in cloth and slid into the bottom of my personal bag.

I left behind everything that had been given to me. The pearl earrings from Margaret. The cashmere throw for the reading chair. The framed photo from the fifth-anniversary banquet where I was smiling at the camera and Jameson was smiling at something just past my shoulder.

I left it all exactly where it was.

On day three I drove to a human town forty minutes south and paid cash for a prepaid phone at a gas station. I sat in the parking lot, the engine running, and typed one message.

*It's time.*

I sent it to Cleo.

She called back in under two minutes. I didn't even get to speak first.

"I'm already packing," she said.

She arrived that evening in a truck with covered cargo space and the expression of someone who has rehearsed this moment in their head so many times that the real thing feels almost quiet. She didn't hug me dramatically. She didn't say I told you so. She just looked at me for one long second in the dim light of the storage corridor, and then she said, "Show me what needs to move."

We worked through the night. Cleo had already mapped the route to Moonveil coastal territory—three different options, depending on road conditions—and she'd secured a cottage rental through a contact she trusted, listed under a pack affiliation that didn't exist. My valuables went into a private storage unit registered in her name, in a facility three towns over. She handled every detail with the operational efficiency of a Gamma warrior who has spent her career solving problems that shouldn't officially exist.

At one point, somewhere around two in the morning, she held up the framed banquet photo I'd left on the shelf and raised an eyebrow at me.

"Leave it," I said.

She set it back down without a word.

By dawn everything was loaded. Cleo squeezed my shoulder once, hard, and drove the truck out through the south gate while the pack was still sleeping. We had agreed: she would go ahead. I would follow by nine.

I had one thing left to do.

---

Jameson left for early training at six-thirty. I heard his truck on the gravel, listened until the sound faded, and then stood very still in the foyer for a moment.

The pack house was quiet. It was always beautiful in the early morning, the light coming through the east windows in long pale columns, the smell of woodsmoke still faint from the night before. I had loved this house once. I had loved it the way you love a place that feels like safety, before you understand what it cost you to stay.

I pressed two fingers to my neck. The skin there was smooth and bare and had always been smooth and bare, and I stood with my fingertips resting against that unmarked place for what I knew was the last time.

Then I lowered my hand.

"I, Alina Lawrence, reject you, Alpha Jameson of the Silverfang Pack, as my mate."

I said it quietly. I said it clearly. The words came out of me without shaking, without tears, with nothing dramatic at all—just the sound of a door being closed on a room I would never enter again.

The bond snapped.

There is no other word for it. One moment it was there—the thread I had carried for ten years, the thing I had mistaken for love, for home, for proof that I was wanted—and then it was gone, and the absence of it was so absolute that I had to put one hand on the foyer table to stay upright.

My wolf made a sound inside me. Not grief. Something older than grief.

Relief.

I straightened. I went upstairs. I placed the USB drive on his pillow, and beside it a single folded piece of paper with seven words written in my steadiest hand: *I know everything. Do not look for me.*

I picked up my bag. I walked out the front door.

I did not look back at the house. Not once. Not at the east windows or the woodsmoke smell or the ten years of mornings I had spent making myself small enough to fit inside someone else's silence.

The January air hit my face like cold water, and I got in my car, and I drove toward the coast.
