Chapter 1

The bond broke at 7:42 on a Sunday evening, three heartbeats after Dillon spoke my name.

I was standing on the ceremony floor in the white dress they'd sewn for me two years ago and let me keep out of pity, and I felt the mark on my neck the way you feel a candle when someone leans over and pinches the wick. Warm. Then not. Then a small, wet, hollow cold spreading from the bite scar down under my collarbone, like a door closing in a room I didn't know was inside me.

"I, Dillon Thorne, Alpha of Ironvale," he said, "reject you, Lara Voss, as my mate and Luna."

My knees hit the marble before I decided to kneel. The pack cheered. Not politely. Loudly. A wall of sound that broke over the top of my head, and under it I could hear Sienna's soft little breath of surprise, the practiced kind, like she hadn't known this was coming, like her white gown hadn't already been steamed and hung in the antechamber for a week.

Dillon didn't look at me. He looked at her. He held out his hand and she climbed the dais in white, and someone—Elder Cal, maybe; I couldn't lift my head—said the words that made her Luna in my place.

My chest was empty. Not sad. *Empty*, the way a house is empty when the power is cut. My aura, whatever thin fraying thread of it I'd ever had, guttered out. I felt every wolf in the room feel it happen. I felt them turn their noses away from me the way you turn your face from a smell.

And then, from somewhere I had never touched inside myself, a voice.

Low. Female. *Furious.*

It didn't say words. It said a shape of a word, a name I couldn't quite catch, like something spoken through water. And it slammed—*slammed*—against a wall I hadn't known was there.

I put my hand flat on the marble and I did not make a sound.

Two Omegas took me under the arms. I know their names. I've scrubbed pots beside them. Neither of them met my eyes. They dragged me off the floor with my heels scraping and I let them because the alternative was to be carried, and I was not going to be carried out of that hall.

By morning my things were in the basement. A cot. A gray blanket. One bare bulb on a chain. My Luna quarters had already been aired out for Sienna—I could smell her perfume in the hall on the way down, layered thick over the ghost of my own soap.

I lay on the cot that first night shivering so hard my teeth clicked, and the voice came back.

*Quiet,* she said. Clearer this time. Mine. Unmistakably mine. *Quiet. Listen.*

I pressed my hand flat against my sternum. I didn't answer out loud. I understood, without being told, that this was the only thing left in the world that belonged to me, and if anyone in that house learned she existed, they would find a way to kill her too.

*No one knows,* I told her, without moving my mouth.

She settled. Not calm. Coiled.

---

Sienna brought the duty roster herself, the next morning, in a soft cream sweater with the sleeves pushed up like she'd been working.

"I know it's hard," she said, laying the paper on the crate beside my cot. Her voice did the thing it does—the little catch, the sympathetic tilt of the head. "But the pack needs to see you contributing, Lara. It'll be better for you if they see it too."

I took the paper. Floor scrubbing. Warrior gear. Meal service. I nodded once.

"Thank you," I said.

Her eyes flickered. She'd wanted more from me. A tremor. A question. Anything to work with. She didn't get it.

I started that afternoon on my knees in the main hall with a brush and a bucket, and when I cleared Dillon's table after dinner—his glass, his plate, the same bourbon label he'd drunk for six years—I lifted the empty tumbler to stack it and my nose caught something.

Bitter. Chemical. A scent under the bourbon that shouldn't have been there. Thin, herbal, wrong.

I'd never smelled it before. Not in three years of clearing that same glass.

My wolf shifted inside my ribs. Not words. Recognition.

I set the glass down carefully on the tray and kept my face still and finished stacking.

---

Barnaby was gone from my basket when I came down at dusk.

I knew before I looked. The blanket was cold. His bowl untouched. Outside, the rain had started an hour ago—the hard, freezing kind that comes off the mountain in April and turns the gravel yard to sheet ice.

I walked. I did not run. Running is what they were waiting to write down.

I found him behind the woodshed, curled tight into the hollow between two logs, shaking so violently his little jaw was chattering. Silver-tipped ear pressed flat. He whined once when he saw me and tried to stand and couldn't.

I knelt in the mud and gathered him up and pressed him against my chest inside my coat, and his cold nose found the skin over my heart, and something in me broke open.

Not grief. *Rage.*

The wolf inside me hit the wall so hard I heard it—actually heard it, a crack under the skin—and a thin bright line of pain split down my collarbone right through the dead mark. My wrist burned. I looked down.

A single strand of silver fur had pushed through the skin at the base of my hand. It caught the porch light for one impossible second. Then it slid back under, and the skin closed over it like water.

I covered my wrist with my other hand.

I stood up. I walked back inside with Barnaby breathing against my throat, my face arranged into the exact soft, hurt, apologetic shape they expected of me.

At the top window on the third floor, a curtain moved.

Sienna was watching. Smiling. Her lips were already shaping the first line of the report.
