Chapter 4

The Lycan Royal Palace rose before us, its ancient stone walls glowing amber in the dawn light. After the nightmare of our escape, the massive structure should have intimidated me. Instead, it felt like... home.

"Welcome," Parker said softly, his hand warm against the small of my back as he guided us through the grand entrance. "You're safe now."

The interior took my breath away. Unlike Lucas's cold, sterile pack house with its clinical white walls and sparse furnishings, Parker's home radiated warmth. Rich tapestries depicting wolf legends adorned the walls, and comfortable furniture was arranged in inviting clusters. The air smelled of cedar and sage, not antiseptic and fear.

"It's beautiful," I whispered, my voice echoing in the high-ceilinged entry hall.

Parker's eyes never left mine. "It's been waiting for you."

Riley clung to my side, her eyes wide as she took in the splendor. The trauma of the past days had left her silent, her body constantly tensed for danger.

"Dr. Griffin is waiting for you," Parker said, kneeling to Riley's level. "He's my brother and the best healer in the kingdom."

Riley flinched at the mention of medical care, her eyes darting to me in panic.

"It's okay," I assured her, squeezing her hand. "This isn't like before."

A tall man with kind eyes approached us, his movements calm and measured. "I'm Samuel," he said gently to Riley. "Would you like to see where you'll be staying?"

To my surprise, Riley nodded slightly and allowed Samuel to lead her away, though she kept glancing back at me.

"She'll be safe," Parker promised. "The medical wing is secure."

---

Later that evening, Parker found me on the balcony of my suite, staring at the stars.

"You have bruises," he said quietly, his fingers ghosting over my cheek where Lucas had struck me.

I winced at the tenderness in his touch. "I'm fine."

"You're not." His voice was firm but gentle as he guided me to sit on the edge of the bed. "May I?"

When I nodded, he knelt before me and carefully rolled up my sleeve, revealing the finger-shaped bruises on my arm. His touch was reverent as he examined each mark, his eyes flashing gold with barely contained rage.

"I've loved you since we were children," he said suddenly. "Did you know that?"

I shook my head, startled by his admission.

"When Lucas claimed you as his mate, I thought I'd lost you forever." Parker's fingers traced patterns on my skin, each touch sending warmth through my body. "What you felt with him... it wasn't true."

"The mate bond—"

"Can be wrong," he finished. "Sometimes the Moon Goddess makes mistakes. That's why she created Second Chance Mates."

He explained the rare phenomenon—when a wolf recognizes their true mate after being bonded to another. As he spoke, he placed his hands on either side of my face, his thumbs brushing away tears I hadn't realized I'd shed.

"Let me help you heal," he whispered.

Over the next days, Parker spent hours with me, teaching me to meditate and reconnect with my wolf. His Lycan aura enveloped me like a protective shield as we sat cross-legged on the floor of his private sanctuary.

"Close your eyes," he instructed. "Feel your wolf."

I did as he asked, reaching inward to the place where my wolf had been silent for so long. To my surprise, she responded immediately, stretching and yawning as if awakening from a deep sleep.

"She's stronger than you thought," Parker said, his voice distant as he channeled his energy into me. "The surgery weakened her, but she's fighting back."

Days passed in this rhythm—healing sessions with Parker, quiet meals with Riley, and nights of deep, dreamless sleep in the security of the palace. My scar stopped aching. My wolf grew stronger. And something else grew too—something between Parker and me that felt both ancient and brand new.

---

In the medical wing, Riley's recovery was slower. She refused to speak, her eyes darting nervously whenever someone approached too quickly.

"She's suffering from PTSD," Samuel explained to me one evening. "The attack triggered her trauma response."

I sat beside her bed, holding her hand. "Will she recover?"

"With time," Samuel assured me. "She's stronger than she appears."

The next day, I found them in the therapy room—Riley sitting rigidly in a chair while Samuel spoke softly to her.

"The Gamma energy is calm," I heard him explain. "It won't hurt you."

Slowly, Riley began to respond to his patient presence. During one session, she suddenly looked up at him with tear-filled eyes.

"Is my mom safe?" she asked, her voice hoarse from disuse.

Samuel's smile was gentle. "Yes. Safer than she's been in years."

Something flickered in Riley's eyes then—a flash of pale silver so brief I almost missed it. Samuel saw it too, his expression shifting from calm to surprised interest.

"Interesting," he murmured, making a note in his file.

"What is it?" I asked later.

Samuel's eyes met mine, serious and thoughtful. "That silver flash... it's rare. Usually only seen in wolves with exceptional power."

"But she can't shift," I reminded him.

"Not yet," he agreed. "But I think we may be witnessing something special beginning to stir within her."

As if confirming his words, Riley's eyes flashed silver again in the mirror across the room, catching both our attention. This time, it lasted a heartbeat longer.
