When Love Faces Adversity
When Love Faces Adversity Chapter 1
"Dad, this is my girlfriend, Harper Green. Harper, this is my father, Albert Davis and my sister Olivia." William introduced us to each other.
I stood next to Albert and looked at William's new girlfriend.
She had chestnut brown curly hair, smooth skin, and a beautiful face. She was wearing a neatly ironed dress. Her style was completely different from that of William's ex-girlfriend, Emily Thompson. William and Emily had been dating for seven years.
When William dumped Emily, Emily cried in distress with snot and tears streaming down her face. Emily felt that she had been fascinated with the wrong person for seven years. She sat down at the door of my house and cried for a long time. However, William went on a week-long trip to Hot Springs Estate with Harper. They posted many photos of them taking a hot spring bath together.
Emily loved William so much. When William had a car accident and was bedridden with broken bones, Emily took care of him for half a year without complaint. After William had recovered, he met Harper, a new intern. In the end, he cheated on Emily. I felt sorry for Emily, but I couldn't do anything about William.
Harper raised her eyebrows and handed the bag to William. She couldn't force a smile and greeted us.
I looked at the embarrassed expression on Albert's face. He didn't even know how to place his hands. I couldn't help but roll my eyes.
I wondered, "If my mother were still alive, she would have slapped William. However, she is no longer with us. She left behind a large sum of money, which allowed William to live a life of extravagance."
Albert said, "Harper, William's mother is gone. William is a good kid, but we spoiled him. When you get married, you can ask him to do whatever you want. If he dares to disobey you, tell me. I will punish him."
After dinner, we sat around the coffee table and ate fruit.
Albert looked down on Harper's behavior of being a mistress, but he couldn't ask William to break up with Harper. Albert thought, "I need to accept this. I am trying to be nice to Harper. If both my children have a good future, I will be happy."
Harper looked at the luxurious decoration in the house and was satisfied. She nodded and said, "I know."
Albert nodded and asked William to peel fruit for Harper.
Harper took the cherries but didn't eat them. She brushed her hair and said with a smile, "The cherries from this place aren't tasty. I usually prefer cherries from Emerald Vale Orchard. They taste sweeter."
I just spit out a pit. I looked up at Harper, then looked at Albert. Albert might not understand her meaning. I said, "Dad, buy more expensive cherries next time."
My dad nodded and said, "Okay. I will buy better cherries."
Before William and Harper left, Albert took out a gift and handed it to Harper, "Harper, come over when you have nothing to do. Tell William what you want to eat. I can prepare anything for you."
That gift was worth at least twenty thousand dollars.
Harper smiled comfortably and nodded modestly.
The family dinner ended in awkwardness.
I didn't care about their conversation at all. I just kept eating until I felt full.
I had to go back to Verdantia. William’s affairs were no longer within my concern.
Emily and I were good friends. Albert was afraid that I would interfere with William and Harper's relationship. But I didn't talk much. Albert was happy to me like this.
