Chapter 2

The torches lit at exactly seven o'clock, their flames catching the autumn wind and throwing long shadows across the banquet hall. Five years running, I'd organized this event down to the last detail — the seating chart that balanced territorial pride with alliance politics, the ceremonial mead brewed from Ironveil honey, the torches themselves positioned to frame the Alpha's platform without creating a fire hazard. I stood in my Luna regalia, a deep green gown that matched the pack colors, flanked by representatives from three allied packs I'd spent months negotiating to invite. My mark was cold against my neck, but I'd gotten used to that.

Roman took the platform. I'd drafted his opening address myself — gratitude for the harvest, acknowledgment of the allied packs, a reminder of Ironveil's strength through unity. Standard ceremonial language. He held my typed notes in his hand.

Then he set them down without looking at them.

"The Moon Goddess works in ways we cannot predict," he began. His voice carried across the hall with that easy Alpha authority. "Five years ago, I lost my fated mate. I believed that loss was permanent. I chose a new bond. I built a new life."

I went very still.

"But the Goddess has returned what was taken from me." He turned, and his gaze found Samara standing at the edge of the platform. She stepped forward, her dark hair catching the torchlight, wearing a dress I'd never seen before. "Samara has come home."

The hall went silent. Not the respectful silence of ceremony. The stunned silence of a pack that had just watched their Alpha violate every protocol governing public announcements.

I stepped forward. "Roman."

He looked at me. And through the bond — that threadbare, muffled connection I'd been trying to manage for weeks — I felt something lock into place.

Alpha tone. Not spoken aloud to the pack. Directed inward, through the mate bond itself, like a hand closing around my throat from the inside.

My body froze.

I couldn't move. Couldn't speak. My wolf slammed against the inside of my chest, howling, but the sound went nowhere. The bond command held me in place like I was a Delta being disciplined, not his chosen mate of five years.

Roman pulled Samara to him. She tilted her head, baring her neck. The torchlight caught the unmarked skin there.

Then he bit down.

The bond between us detonated.

I felt it. Every second. The heat of the new mark searing into Samara's skin, the chemical rush of a fated bond snapping into place, the answering cold spreading through my own mark like ice fracturing across glass. My wolf screamed inside me — not a howl of challenge but a sound of pure agony, the kind of sound an animal makes when a limb is torn off.

The mark on my neck went from cold to frozen. Hollow. Dead.

Roman released the Alpha tone.

My legs gave out.

I didn't hit the floor. Someone caught me — arms under my shoulders, lifting me with the efficient strength of a trained warrior. Beta Garrett. He didn't ask permission. He turned and carried me out of the hall while three hundred pack members and allied representatives watched in absolute silence.

I didn't look back. I couldn't. My vision was blurred, my wolf still screaming inside me, and the only thing I could feel through the bond now was static. White noise. The hollow echo of something that used to be alive.

Garrett carried me to the healer's ward and set me down on a cot with a gentleness that didn't match his size. Mira appeared immediately, her hands already moving to check my pulse.

"Luna—"

"Document it," I said. My voice came out hoarse but steady. "Everything. The mark's temperature. The bond fracture. I want it recorded as a formal medical finding."

Mira's hands stilled for half a second. Then she nodded and reached for her examination kit.

I sat up. My wolf was still pacing inside me, slamming against my ribs, but she wasn't silent. She was enraged. That mattered. I pressed two fingers to the mark on my neck. It felt like touching a scar that had never properly healed — cold, numb, wrong.

Mira worked in silence, recording vitals, documenting the physical presentation of a severed bond. When she finished, she met my eyes.

"Whatever you need from me, Alpha Roselyn."

Not Luna. Alpha.

I looked at her. She'd treated Brinley since birth. She knew the child's wolfsbane sensitivity by heart. She'd watched me manage this pack for five years while Roman handled the visible authority and I handled everything that actually kept the pack running.

I didn't correct her.

"Thank you, Mira," I said.

I left the healer's ward and went back to the pack house. The banquet was still going — I could hear the muted sounds of forced celebration through the walls. I walked past the common areas, past the Alpha's quarters, to the east wing guest rooms.

I moved my belongings first. Then Brinley's. Two trips, methodical, without assistance. An Omega named Clara appeared in the hallway and offered to help. I thanked her by name and declined.

On my second trip, Roman was waiting in the hallway outside the guest quarters.

"Roselyn—"

I looked at him. Really looked. At the man who had used our mate bond as a weapon. Who had held me frozen while he marked another woman. Who had let me feel every second of it through a connection that was supposed to be sacred.

"You will hear from me through the Council," I said.

I stepped into the room and closed the door.

I stood there for a moment, listening. His footsteps didn't move. He was still in the hallway. Through the bond — what was left of it — I felt confusion. Guilt. The muffled static of a man who didn't understand what he'd just destroyed.

I withdrew. Pulled back from the mind-link with the same deliberate control I'd used to manage pack logistics for five years. The connection went threadbare. The static on my side was perfectly, intentionally controlled.

I heard him leave.

I pressed two fingers to the dead mark on my neck and walked to the desk. Pulled out my leather journal. Wrote the date. The time. What had happened at the banquet. What I'd felt through the bond.

Then I added a new entry: *Contact Lycan Council. Invoke Luna Accord. Petition for bond dissolution and sole guardianship.*

Evidence was evidence.

And I was done being the woman who absorbed damage and called it devotion.
